How more challenging and scary has being a Jew in Europe become?
"It's very challenging, as an individual and as a community."
You're referring to fears of anti-Semitism?
"Yes. We witnessed an attack on Yom Kippur in eastern Germany, not ISIS - Neo-Nazis. In the last years, no Jews were killed by neo-Nazis in Europe. It's a whole new phenomenon."
"We have problems today from the left and the right and the center. This is beside the attacks on religious freedom, against shechita (ritual slaughter) and bris milah (circumcision)."
And is there anything that could be done? It seems like it's a phenomenon for generations of course.
"We're there and we're fighting. We're fighting but sometimes it's not an easy fight. The main thing is to get support from our communities and from our allies."
Do you think that some countries will really legislate against shechita and bris milah? Or is it just declarations?
"No. It's a real problem. If we don't do anything, it's possible that in many countries in Europe, bris milah will be forbidden and then that's the end of an organized Jewish community in those cities and countries.
"We're seeing that the Muslim world is also opposing this legislation. Maybe you can say that the Jews and Muslims are on the same side on this point.
"We may be collateral damage. We Jews lived in Europe for over a thousand years and no one said a word about bris milah. It is only because of the immigration of millions and millions of people from the Middle East that we have problems today. We are the collateral damage."

So it’s still okay for males to have their genitals mutilated, but wrong for females. Got it.
Our son’s peckers are our lookout, not that of European bureaucrats. We’ve been circumcising male children for about four millennia, and we’re still here where other civilizations have petered out. But Europe is not our promised land. If your interference becomes too egregious, we can now leave, since the British no longer block access to the Holy Land. We’re not locked in with the European powers that be. But you are locked in with Muslims, who also circumcise. And they won’t leave. They’ll make you leave. This dog won’t hunt. Please call it off for your sakes, not ours.
You characterize it as mutilation. What you decide to do with your son’s johnson is your business. But don’t presume to call a common and widespread procedure “mutilation”. Circumcision is celebrated and required in two of the major religions. What have we done for thousands of years before you came along and taught us the error of our ways. Go protect your little friend. The ‘mutilators’ want to trim it. Wooooo!
Just because it’s common and widespread doesn’t make it any less barbaric.
Again. What did we do for millennia until you came along and called it barbaric. Auto da fe, pogroms, crucifixion, gas chambers. Blood libels. What were those? But male circumcision? Barbaric!
What’s really barbaric is trying to impose your views on others. To Jews, male circumcision is the rite of initiation that binds us to our forefathers in a covenant with G-d. It is celebrated with a festive meal and the whole congregation is welcome. To you, it’s ‘barbaric’ and ‘mutilation’? So fine. Don’t circumcise yourself. Don’t circumcise your sons. But don’t try imposing your values on us. You are hardly the first to make that mistake.

While those who wish to ban circumcision can, and may, have hidden agendas, this is part and parcel of ongoing trends, and not necessarily anti-Jewish. If the governments pushing for a ban give allowances to muslims, then it is anti-Semitic, but along with other trends, like “animal rights”, this COULD just be a case of the Left making gains against it’s bugbears, namely animals being killed for food, genital mutilation, etc.
Parents, and not the state, are custodians of their children’s welfare. It’s up to them.
The Left can forego circumcising their own children. Legislating against practitioners of a religion that pre-dates Europe may or may not be anti-Jewish, but it’s insufferable busybodiness and a violation of a fundamental human right. Funny how the latest intellectual fad in Europe always ends up in persecuting Jews one way or the other, from ghetto-izations and expulsions in the Middle Ages to the latest outrage.
It’s time they stopped this. Jews don’t have to stand still and take it, and Muslims will push back violently. I don’t advocate submitting to dhimmitude, but it makes no sense to pick a fight needlessly, either. The end result will be bloodshed in the streets, and Europe finally made Judenrein. Neither result is desirable, but both are inevitable reaction to a leftist bugbear.
I agree, but the Left is the Left-they want to impose their values on all of us, regardless of consequences. I think we both realize how tone deaf they are to reality.
The ban is targeted at moslems. Jews have been circumcising their sons for centuries in various European states with no issue

Technically it IS mutilation, God decreed but mutilation nonetheless.
And this isn’t “Europe”, rather a few states mostly Iceland, Sweden and Germany proposing it for themselves. None has passed a ban

The ban question was raised by those who had their Johnson’s nipped as kids and had no say in it. These are lapsed Jews and Muslims.
