Thai officials glimpse a silver lining in the U.S.-China trade war as companies such as Sony Corp. move production to Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. At least 10 firms are in the process of relocating some production to Thailand from China, according to the National Economic & Social Development Council. More than a dozen others could potentially choose Thailand, it said in a statement.
“We may not see the impact on the economy now, but in the second half of 2019, it could become a positive factor for growth,” the agency’s Deputy Secretary-General Wichayayuth Boonchit said Monday.
Trade tension is sapping growth in Asia’s export-dependent economies, sparking calls for looser monetary and fiscal policies. Nations such as Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand are also vying to lure investment from manufacturers seeking to escape U.S. tariffs on imports from China.
The 10 firms moving some manufacturing to Thailand include Sony, Sharp Corp., Harley-Davidson Inc. and Delta Electronics Inc. Most have finalized locations near Bangkok or in the Eastern Economic Corridor development zone on the east coast of Thailand, according to the economic and social development agency.
Earlier Monday, the agency said the country’s gross domestic product rose 2.3% in the second quarter from a year earlier, the slowest pace in almost five years, as the U.S.-China spat took its toll.

A relative of mine loves her peaches. So one day she looks at one of her peach cans. It says “Product of USA. Packed in Thailand.” Well, that didn’t make any sense, so she called the company.
Yep. It was cheaper for the company to ship their US peaches to Thailand for packing - and then ship them back - than to have them packed at home. Crazy, eh?

To be strictly fair, the envirowackos and other leftists have made it so there are many products that cannot be legally or economically made (or both!) in the US. Example: Anything with lead, such as car batteries, can’t be made here any more. Even if your plant is completely automated and hermetically sealed, you simply can’t make lead acid batteries here any more.

Concrete example: labor cost differential would add about $30 to the price of an iphone for example. Far lower then your quoted fraction since the retail price of an iphone is in the $800’s.
The whole point of the tariffs is to equalize cost differentials. If they have to be applied to other East Asian countries not playing by the same rules that American companies have to, so be it.

The products are different and the price too. There are little to none motorcycles in China with engines above 250cc.
150cc is that most bikes in India.
