The last time Nashvilles mayors office made national news - a scant seventeen months ago - then mayor Megan Barry resigned after pleading guilty to felony theft relating to an extramarital affair she had with the police officer in charge of her security.
This time its for a better reason. After David Briley served as interim mayor, a full-term election is now in progress. And that election is being shaken up by Carol Swain, a woman who is - of all things in traditionally Democratic Nashville, a blue stronghold in a red state - a no-holds-barred black, Christian Republican conservative.
Swains vitae resembles neurosurgeon/cabinet member Ben Carsons, but is in some ways more extraordinary. She was one of twelve children born in rural Virginia in 1954, growing up in a shack without running water. Her mother, a victim of infantile paralysis who never made it out of high school, was physically abused by her stepfather. Her own father ended his education at third grade. Carol herself, shoeless and unable to attend on snow days, did not finish high school either. She dropped out and married at sixteen to have three children, one of whom died of sudden infant death syndrome. Five years later, she was divorced and tried to commit suicide.
But then everything slowly changed. In a remarkable bootstrap story she would likely ascribe to her faith, Swain earned her GED while working as a cashier at McDonalds, then attended, in succession, Virginia Western Community College, Roanoke College (BA), Virginia Tech (MA), University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (PhD) and Yale (MLS).

Heard her on the radio last week. While not the most well-spoken and on her toes when it comes to questions, she does answer correctly from our POV.
I think she’s a winner!
It is indeed. And in a perfect world it might well be enough to get her elected. But Nashville Metro government has never had a Republican elected mayor that I’ve been able to find.
Sounds good!
If she gets the country-western vote, she’s in.
Been following her since 2016.
She was an early Trump supporter. She went through hell her last years as a Phd tenured professor at Vanderbilt Uniiversity because of her consevative Christian veiws on LGBT topics.
A batch of activists tried to have her tenure taken away. They did not succeed but it was not long before she left Vanderbilt on her own.
She has the least $$ backing of all the mayoral candidates and can use help even now. She has her own web site for anyone interested & she is on FB.
The democrats there (or anywhere) wouldn’t vote for Jesus the Christ much less this woman.
I’ve met Dr. Swain and spoke with her at a small party in Old Hickory two weeks ago. She was intelligent, gracious, and definitely on track to go against the corrupt Democrats, both black and white, that have been railroading Nashville. I’d support her unequivocally.
Holy smokes! I know of her from her Prager U videos. They are must-see stuff. Shes awesome.

Turn off the TV and watch these tonight!
I'll take honesty in communications style any day.
.
Have you guys met?
I absolutely agree with you.
Just wish she was an off-the-cuff hard hitter. She’ll get there perhaps.
What a remarkable story!
Ping! I will attempt to watch tonight. Thanks for posting.
Carol Swain would probably be the GREATEST mayor Nashville ever had.
She's a BRILLIANT Conservative.
“Black? Woman? Who cares! Conservative is what the residents of Nashville will come to respect.”
And those that have met her do.
From her own perspective she is a conservative who happens to be a woman and “black”. She is a conservative from her own education and personal Christian religious values. Being “black” and a woman is who she is as well. She can’t change or deny that.
Don’t depreciate her value just because she is a “black” woman.
She’s awesome...we should send her campaign $.
I hope you do.
“I think shes a winner!”
You from Nashville?
And thats alright by me
