Surfer bitten by shark, goes to bar instead of hospital

A professional surfer in Florida was injured Saturday when a shark bit his elbow, leaving him bloody and with deep tooth marks.

According to WJXT, surfer Frank O'Rourke was surfing at Jacksonville Beach around 3:30 p.m. when the shark latched onto his arm, knocking him off his board.

O'Rourke's friend, RJ Berger, saw the whole thing happen.

"He was right there behind the wave and boom, that's when he got hit," Berger said.

Berger said O'Rourke was treated by a lifeguard but did not go to a hospital, even though Berger said he thinks his friend could have used a stitch or two.

"He immediately went to the bar, because he was like, 'Hey, I got bit by a shark,'" Berger said. "And people were like, 'I'll buy you drinks.' So he hung out at the pier."

A surfer himself, Berger says it won't stop him from hitting the waves.

"It's inevitable, it's going to happen," Berger said. "It's happened to a couple of my friends. It doesn't bother you, but I mean, if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. There's nothing much you can do to really stop that, so try not to worry about it."

Alcohol disinfects the wound.

OR at least makes you forget you have it if you drink enough :)

Not the same thing, but about 10 years ago, a guy in Hazel Park, Michigan got stabbed, then walked into the Brayz Hamburgers on 10 Mile Road (a landmark, near me), ordered coffee and asked the clerk to call an ambulance for him.

Brayz Hamburgers. Coffee worth getting stabbed for.

Just what you need for bleeding - a few shots of vasodilator.

Had a guy get into my cab who was stabbed on the right side.

Said his girlfriend did it. He wasn’t gushing.

Asked me to take him to a certain address and I did.

What are you gonna do?

You don’t make things your business when you drive a cab.

Who can say? Maybe by goin drinking he flushed out the wound preventing infection.

Maybe by not going to an ER he prevented getting an infection too.

Just think of all the drinks that were bought for him for relating his experience with the shark.

That’s nothing. On November 8th 2008, an employee of the Muslim brotherhood won the election and I went to a bar and drank until I could barely stand

Hours and hours and hours and hours of waiting in an emergency room! Few years ago I broke my leg right above my ankle. I heard it break before I even hit the floor. Not visible on the outside so I crawled to my first aid kit, wrapped it up and went to hospital. It was 11:30 pm when I arrived. They provided a wheelchair and raised my leg and put me in waiting room. I sat there until 6:00 am, got xrays and was sent to orthopedic center 5 miles away. You wouldn’t believe what I witnessed coming in that night! I plan to be absolutely desperate before I ever willing go back.

Broken bone at the ER late night? That’s nothing...especially if you’re in an urban area.

"So, like the waves were really gnarly, and I was like so fried from partying last night, and my friend yells 'Yo dude, SHARK!', and I'm like 'Wuuuut?', and BOOM, this big bro shark latches onto my arm, and I'm like 'Whoa, dude, that hurts!', and the shark he don't say a thing, and then he lets go, and I think maybe I can cop some free beers from this, and like 'Here I am, just partying away!"

Totally agree, not blaming hospital — I couldn’t believe what they were dealing with. My discomfort being in the environment far outweighed the discomfort in my ankle. I would never go for a stitch or two!

A few years ago my aorta decided it was going to unravel, right in the middle of the night. I went to the ER with cutting, ripping chest pains. They did an EKG, and when they were convinced I wasn't having a heart attack, made me sit in the waiting room for the next six hours. I'm fortunate. The dissection happened in just such a way that no blood flow was cut off to any part of my body.

Take him to the nearest bar and buy him a drink.

Looks like it might have originally been a White Castle.
Oops, did I say WHITE Castle?
