Rep. Jerry Nadler (D., N.Y.) on Friday suggested a future Democratic president could confiscate citizens' guns based on the precedent of President Donald Trump's national emergency announcement regarding the border wall.
Nadler, the new chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, appeared on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time" to discuss Trump's announcement earlier in the morning. Trump declared it "necessary" to build the wall on the southern border.
Host Chris Cuomo asked Nadler if enough Republicans would come out against Trump, prompting him to say, "I think so" and that he believes Republicans are terrified of unintended consequences. He speculated about other hypothetical national emergencies if a Democrat were to win in 2020.
"If the president can declare an emergency today on this nonsense, on this, the Democratic president can decide that, as you mentioned, the 40,000 people a year killed in this country is a crisis. And why don't we take everybody's guns away? Or force everybody to register their guns, or ban all assault rifles, or do all of that without congressional approval?" Nadler said. "This opens up tyranny or dictatorship."
"Now it may be something that the Republicans don't particularly oppose, but tomorrow, with a Democratic president, it could be something they hate," Nadler continued.
Nadler isn't the only Democrat bringing up national emergency hypotheticals that a Democratic president could push in the future.
"Our next President should declare a #NationalEmergency on day 1 to address the existential threat to all life on the planet posed by Climate Change," tweeted freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (Minn.).

There is already precedent for presidents abusing executive power, just ask Lincoln or FDR. They make it sound like this is the first time, and quite frankly, I have no doubt a Democrat president would move against guns if he thought he had the political backing.
Good luck with that.
What precedent, Obama did it 11 times.
Could try that, but would be in office less time than William Henry Harrison.
We’re pushing 400 million weapons in this country.
That’s counting the legal ones.
Someone I know told me that between 1000 and 2000 guns come into this country illegally every single day. That may be a high figure, but I doubt it is no small number.
Nadler, good luck with that.
In the case of Lincoln, we had actual states surrounding Washington DC with plenty of Confederate sympathy, so Lincoln forced bordering states not to secede and protect the capital. FDR? We were at War with Japan at the time. My grandfather was forbidden to speak German at all during that time. It was ordered to prevent them from thinking he was helping the enemy. He even Anglicized his name after war as well.
Better do it soon you fat NYC piece of excrement. I am not getting younger and there are lots of liberals need a reckoning.
Building a wall to protect our borders, constitutional. Seizing firearms, unconstitutional. Any questions Waddler?
Ask Thomas Gage how well that worked, Jerry.
And plenty of them likely go into the hands of criminals such as gangs who will gladly kill innocent civilians and police officers.
We'll see how far they get with that scheme.
If that’s the case Nads, how come Clinton or Obama never did it?
Methinks Nadler needs a cvics lesson.
Which sounds rediculous since my family is four people in the house at least all night.
Let me guess...Nadler the Hutt is gay too?
If thats the case, then perhaps the president should go ahead and revoke Nadlers right to free speech.
So Republicans are supposed to be afraid of what Democrats might do in the future? What kind of stupid blackmail is that?
I specifically remember listening to Holder speak once. His words chilled me to the bone, as he quoted Mao. “We get it. Political power comes out of the end of a gun.” He was the US AG at the time.
And so he instituted policies to make kids get suspended for pop tarts in the shape of guns. He also said that “when they go low, we kick them......we have to brainwash people against guns.”
You win the internet for today. Apt ID there, Morpheus...
