DETROIT (AP) General Motors will lay off up to 14,000 factory and white-collar workers in North America and put five plants up for possible closure as it restructures to cut costs and focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles.
The reduction includes 8,100 white-collar workers, some of whom will take buyouts and others who will be laid off. Some U.S. factory workers could transfer to truck or SUV factories that are increasing production.

GM was dead to me when they stole our tax dollars for the 2009 Bailout. They are still dead to me. I hope the company will go under. Sympathy for their workers? Nope. Not until the factories and intellectual property are sold off to a company that is not stealing from productive Americans.
Read the article....don’t be misled....
Well, looks like the Democrats are back in town.
I’m sure Michael Moore is getting ready to make his new documentary “Mary and Me”. /s
I see this, in a way, as government getting out of industry. I guess this is proof that Socialism is a failure.
But, but, but I thought the Unions would protect jobs.....oh, wait. The Union owns the company.
But Obama told us bin Laden is dead and GM is alive, as his reelection slogan. Could GM still go under eventually?
Why are autonomous cars necessary?
*Someone* will have the power to override the computer, but that someone will not be the driver. Maybe some Antifa-google employee? Maybe he’ll be making decisions about where I can go?
Imagine an airplane with autopilot, but no controls for the actual professionals flying it. So the pilot on board, who has a stake in the plane getting safely to its destination, won’t be on board.
The whole scenario is anti-freedom, and potentially terrifying.
Let them all go to work for the Democrat Party.
Theyve been paying them for years.
Autonomous vehicles...I see a movie plot.
Agreed. I think they will be priced downward enough...that some Chinese company will buy them, and remarket the older brand names, with Chinese employees as the ‘makers’.
This is NOT really an issue since MORE JOBS than they have workers to fill them currently exist.
These are the parts that jumped out at me, excerpts follow:
Most of the affected factories build cars that wont be sold in the U.S. after next year, including the Chevrolet Volt rechargeable gas-electric hybrid. They could close or they could get different vehicles to build. Their futures will be part of contract talks with the United Auto Workers union next year.
Those cuts are in addition to $6.5 billion that the company has announced by the end of this year.
GM doesnt foresee an economic downturn and is making the cuts to get in front of it while the company is strong and while the economy is strong”...
GM has offered buyouts to 18,000 retirement-eligible workers with a dozen or more years of service. It would not say how many have accepted the buyouts, but it was short of the companys target because GM said there will be white-collar layoffs.
End excerpts
That level of white collar workers being cut means they have nothing new to invest in.
They have to be cutting engineers - now how much is deadwood, ready for retirement (with potential savings for buying out early), and/or how much is a losss of future investment in the company is the real question.
GM = GOVERNMENT Motors
Sorry for anyone losing job. When this auto maker was propped up by tax dollars this eventual correction was set in motion and bound to happen.
Didn’t Obama save GM or something ..while taking out bin laden ?
I recall that was his battle cry for 2012.
So now GM is dying while bin laden is..well we don’t know. We never saw the body.
The ex workers of Saturn are probably saying “It’s about time you finally got yours!”
