An uneasiness has overtaken the body politic. There is a sense that a terrible clash is about to occur. The establishments contempt for Donald Trump, and their machinations to remove him, are validated by the presidents intemperate counterattacks and the glee that his supporters take in his barbs. These two groups do not simply disagree; they consider each other to be illegitimate and unconstitutional outlaws.
It is true that Trumps behavior is not befitting his office and that a certain decorum and dignity in the White House is not only desirable but essential. Democracy is no different from any other form of government in that the political order is shaped by the character and example of its leaders.
However, there are also many reasons for Trump supporters to despise the establishment: endless wars in which the brunt of casualties are borne by those from Trump country, grotesque public debt generated by vote buying, a two-tiered educational system that ensures income inequality, pervasive government surveillance, open and lawless borders, and on and on. Our elites bring to mind the French aristocracy under Louis XVI, feigning formality yet, behind the scenes at least, corrupt, incompetent, and ruthless.
Ultimately what is most disconcerting is that the divisiveness is not just about Trump: its deeply rooted in two diametrically opposed civic religions. America is no longer one country. These two groups view their national story through different symbolic mythologies.

In a real civil war most of us will be dead before it ends, short or long.
Correct, we are already at least 30 million people into a 30 year bipartisan policy of non-enforcement.
Unless we remove the interlopers and restore the rule of law, we still lose our country.
The Bush Plan for North Mexico continues unabated.
Jackson was as plain spoken and idirect as Trump.
And the people were so happy that they never realized that their rights had been taken away.
You argue as if we have self rule WHICH WE OBVIOUSLY DO NOT. There is nothing to lose, give me an Augustus or give me Civil War!
And when?
Rome never returned to the Republic after Augustus. Neither will we. Look for the Man on Horseback as Savior and find he becomes executioner.
Simmering,,,to a Boil.
We have no republic now! We have no self rule! Look at what’s happening, the curtain has been lifted. We have nothing to lose.
I want us to avoid a civil war, but I think that Dem's and the Deep State want a bloody confrontation. I am glad we did not have widespread riots in large urban central cities during a hot summer this year. It could happen, but I hope it doesn't.
While I like the cut of your jib, your solution does not go far enough.
We need holes filled with the bodies of thousands of traitors, as it is the only way to secure an American future for my children.
The left has been fighting a war against us and our values for many years. It is time for us to finish and end that war.
Amen...... jails? certainly not. the proper place is graves.
People in jails will be pardoned. People that are dead can’t be pardoned.
The game is for all the marbles....... no kumbaya
I stopped reading at that point. Where was William Smith when the turd was lying through his teeth and making a shambles of the presidency? William Smith can go pound sand.
I did read the whole thing. The piece sure didn't read like it was written by an "American Conservative". Author sounded like he had a distaste for everything not-deepstate\liberal, and was touching the topic out of a need to hedge his bets on the outcome of his looming civil war.
You do know that the left will have the full backing of leftists around the world who control most governments?
Then we have our dear allies who would like nothing better than to weaken this country. If it was just us against them, yes we would win, but the left does not adhere to any rules and it would be us against most of the world.
for later
If the coupe is successful, that will be the ignition point.
You both bring up an excellent point that I’ve considered again and again: How on Earth do you tell who the enemy is?
Unless someone opens their mouth and says something, or somehow openly displays their affiliation, you simply will not know. The danger of friendly fire is huge here.
Decorum and dignity like that of JFK, LBJ, BJ Clinton, Hillary, Zero and Moochelle. Trump has restored some dignity to the White House.
