There's nearly a Nixon '74 level of public support for impeaching Trump

(CNN)There is a truly remarkable number in the most recent CNN poll, conducted by SSRS and out this morning.

In it, 42% of Americans say President Donald Trump should be impeached and removed from office. What makes it remarkable is that he's on par with President Richard Nixon, who 43% of Americans said should be impeached and removed from office in a March 1974 Harris poll. That was after the scale of Watergate came to light, but months before the House started to move against Nixon, who would go on to resign in August 1974 rather than be impeached.

Impeachment requires "treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors," according to the Constitution, which also lists it as the the only thing for which a President can't issue a pardon. Trump has bragged that he certainly has the power to pardon himself but won't need to use it. Nixon got a pardon from Gerald Ford, the man to whom he gave the keys to the White House.

The 43% supporting Nixon's impeachment in that Harris poll, by the way, is much higher than the 29% who supported impeachment for President Bill Clinton in 1998. Or, for that matter, the similar number who wanted Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush impeached. As CNN's Grace Sparks writes, there's basically "a baseline of pro-impeachment sentiment for a modern president" and Trump far eclipses it. So why aren't top Democrats clamoring to impeach Trump? To be sure, there are efforts on the outskirts of the party and in Congress, but they do not have the backing of party big wigs.

Most Democrats in Congress, for the record, have opposed efforts by Rep. Al Green, a Texas Democrat, to bring the issue to the floor of the House.

Exactly. What “treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors” has he committed?

1. Impeachment is not decided by popular vote but by constitutional procedure.
2. This is nothing but more CNN Fake News. Other (real) polls show Trump’s approval at all-time highs.

I regard the emoluments angle to be utterly inane and insane. It is based on mind-reading - speculation about what foreign diplomats might be THINKING, i.e., "Trump will like it if I stay in his hotel" - and in the absence of any actual evidence that Trump has offered any quid-pro-quo to a foreign government in exchange for their using any of his businesses.

It also assumes that Trump would travel the country for a year running for office, remove himself from direct control of his business empire, put up with all the stresses and inconveniences and abuse of being president, to "profit" from business transactions (hotel room occupancies, etc.) which would have in all likelihood occurred anyway, even if he never ran for president.

It is of course possible that some people will stay in Trumps hotels and resorts and hotels because he is president, but it is even likelier - given what we have seen - that people will BOYCOTT them because he is president.

The idea that Trump ran for president to further his business interests makes no sense at any level.

I think they put this out because the snowflakes actually think you can impeach a Potus if you don’t like him.

Impeachment requires "treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors,"

All easily could be charged to Obama, Clinton and so many in DC Swamp. There is not one damn thing POTUS did wrong within the confines of the Constitution.

All I found was a claim the sample size was 1000 and all were “adults”. No idea if they were registered or likely voters of if they were even US citizens.

Basically this is another “Hillary can’t lose” poll.

“”Nowhere in the article does it reference what he would be impeached for.””

There are a number of actions they could cite - he beat Hillary in the election and is now sitting in HER White House; they just plain don’t like him; they don’t like the way he combs his hair; he doesn’t take their guff and you can add on from there. I’m sure they could fill a page of reasons but unfortunately the Constitution rules on that but from what I heard today of the Supreme Court decisions that were handed down, with the mixture of unexpected votes we can’t even depend on them anymore.

Oh look. A CNN poll, by a group I’ve never heard of, with absolutely no internals.

Let me guess:

Sample size: 12.
Margin of Error: +- 160%
Republicans. 0%
Democrats: 100%
CNN Viewers: 100%

I have not been able to figure out on what grounds they want to impeach him.

a less than pleasing personality?

bad hair?

too rich?

or that they are losing power minute by minute and need to get him out of the White House and get someone else in their who will play ball and that they can control?
