He fell onto the railroad tracks, and woke up without legs
Sacramento Bee ^ | November 10, 2017 | Sam Stanton

Joe Nevis doesn’t remember much about the early morning hours of last Christmas Eve, when a train rolling through Marysville sliced off both his legs as he lay on the railroad tracks where he had fallen near a park.

A girl I went to college with tried to hop a train that went right through town. She was intoxicated. Lost her grip, fell under the tracks and lost both her her feet.

Ended up a couple feet shorter.

For taking this case, Sacramento attorney Daniel Wilcoxen should be severely beaten with a wet noodle, then sentenced to six months of Friday & Saturday, 10pm to 6am Emergency Room duty, assisting the staff in dealing with drunks, cleaning up after them and ensuring that they safely arrive home in one piece.

This guy was sober when a train ran over his legs and he got a cool $920,000 for it.

He can sue in court but I don’t think they will find that he has a leg to stand on.

Amazing he didn’t bleed to death. But I would speculate the weight pinched the arteries shut.

So he drank the Flavor-aide rather the alcohol.

There is not much difference in the outcome. Both make you stupid beyond belief.

Dumb stunts when drunk can bring a lifetime of regret, for sure. I was fortunate that during my drinking days nothing ever happened. Lord knows it wasn’t from a lack of trying.

Why? Its just another night of heavy drinking. He would have probably remember the night he didn’t take a sip of alcohol.

Every alcoholic remembers the first sip of the evening. "Tonight I'll keep a lid on it. Just a nice buzz and go home. Tonight I won't do anything stupid. I'll keep it under control. I won't black out. I won't pee in the closet. I won't lose my wallet or pass out in the bushes. Tonight I'll drink like a normal person."

And some nights we do drink like a normal person. Not often but sometimes. Other nights we pass out, black out, get punched out, piss the bed, embarrass ourselves, embarrass those around us. And sometimes horrible things happen that change our lives forever. When we take that first sip, we never know what night it is going to be.

“Slicing” is not what trains do.

Some will die in hot pursuit in fiery auto crashes

Some will die in hot pursuit while sifting through my ashes

Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain

That is pouring like an avalanche, coming down the mountain

Somehow, without reading the article (FR tradition had to be observed), I knew that alcohol must have been a factor.

A friend of a friend years ago hopped a train. The bar he grabbed ripped his arm right off. A train is not a toy or a taxi.

NEVER hop a moving train! No matter what speed! Hopped a freight once, next place it stopped was 600+ miles away and I had a dislocated shoulder. Hours of agony!

Uh oh. From the article:

“The forward-facing video camera on the passenger train’s lead locomotive shows that Mr. Nevis was clearly visible to anyone inside the locomotive keeping a proper lookout, i.e., being alert and attentive,” the lawsuit says.

The train operators took no action to sound the locomotive’s horn or try to brake, the suit says, and “ran over Mr. Nevis, amputating his left leg above the knee and his right leg below the knee.”

The train continued on its route and no one reported the incident, the suit says, ...

See my #34. Though he was at fault, I suspect Amtrak will settle given he was in plain view of the camera and they didn't stop to render aid.

I threatened to do this same thing because of diabetic peripheral neouropathy. It really flairs up some days.

Then, a soldier friend of mine who left his legs in Afghanistan told me about phantom pain.
