Mocking Critics, Donald Trump Says He Can Win Without Republican Unity
New York Times ^ | April 29, 2016 | JONATHAN MARTIN and ADAM NAGOURNEY

BURLINGAME, Calif. — Donald J. Trump got a taste on Friday of what his next month of campaigning in California could be like. He was forced to exit his motorcade and walk through a field, climbing an embankment with Secret Service agents helping him, to avoid angry demonstrators on the street.

“We went under a fence and through a fence, and oh, boy, it felt like I was crossing the border, actually,” Mr. Trump said when he finally made it to a ballroom to speak at California’s Republican Party convention.

For the next 25 minutes, though, Mr. Trump spoke little of California or its June 7 primary. Rather, he wrestled with whether he wanted to begin healing the fractured party he was seeking to lead. Mr. Trump, the Republican front-runner in the presidential race, mocked his conservative critics and his current and former rivals as dumb, “disgusting” and losers. He claimed at least twice that he could win even if the party did not come together. And with some conservatives still uneasy about his beliefs, he breezily dismissed questions about his principles.

“Folks, I’m a conservative, but at this point, who cares? We got to straighten out the country,” he said at a subdued luncheon of party activists who seemed more curious about seeing a celebrity than enthusiastic about their potential presidential nominee.

During the same speech, though, he called for party unity to defeat Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic standard-bearer.

Mr. Trump’s remarks offered a vivid illustration of the current state of his campaign: As he edges closer to the nomination, he is under pressure to curb his hard-edged language and exude a more statesmanlike demeanor. But the continuing attacks from other Republicans plainly rankle him, and he appears to have little appetite to make peace with his critics.

Republicans who supported other candidates in the primaries are told that they should unify behind Trump. That will not happen if he continues to disrespect them and their candidates.

That is certainly true. The reverse is also.

Won't unify? So I guess they're leaning toward Hillary ....that is to say, this Hillary.

"I am delighted to be here in these new headquarters......it’s good to have an outpost of the Council right here down the street from the State Department. We get a lot of advice from the CFR, so this will mean I won’t have far to go to be told what we should be doing and how we should think about the future."

Talk about an editorialized quote! This NYTimes reporter quotes a single word. One might surmise the writer has a slant they want to push in this editorial masquerading as news.

This is good news.

Trump will hurt himself in the general hanging out with typical Republican place holders.

Romney buddying up with McCain,Rubio & Jeb during the general was disgusting.

“Republicans who supported other candidates in the primaries are told that they should unify behind Trump.”
They should. Lyin’ Ted is the only candidate who insults the other candidate’s supporters.

I’ve never heard Trump insult Cruz supporters or anyone’s supporters.

Unless you count dozens of writers at National Review who Trump refuses to curl up in a ball to.

What’s he meant to do to conservative pundits. Commend them every time they make an attack on Trump?

The article misrepresents Trumps remarks as to, in fact be a lie.

I suggest you look up his actual speech on YouTube

What do you mean by the reverse is true? In my mind, it’s that Trump can win without them, but they cannot win without Trump.

My comment was mainly directed at enmity between the candidates and their supporters from each group.

Not so much so that Trump doesn’t really need the opponents supporters to get the nomination. It is conceivable that he could win the general without some of the Cruz supporters, but it would be iffy and subject to Hillary Fraud.

The one thing I do know is that if the nomination is weaseled out from under him if he walks in with the 1237+, Cruz or whoever they select won’t be getting much support from Trump supporters in the general election.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t support the candidate if that does happen but there will be an appreciable number who won’t.

He mocks what needs to be mocked. Cruz has alienated the Congress (both houses) and a lot of his base by his antics while trying to keep his hands clean of all the controversial stuff. Trump rolls up his sleeves and dives right in like a working man...

Many people respect what Trump is doing and feel the same way about those he mocks.

If you watched the videos or even looked at the photos, it was fact not insult that Kasich's eating and talking with food in his mouth is disgusting.

The NAU will eliminate even the crappy border we have with Mexico and those savage will be legally free to roam to any town. And if Cruz can't convince his own wife that NAU is wrong for America, how will he ever handle it with the cheap labor express, Congress and the American people. Pages 33 and 34 33 and 34 of NAU paper:

I support the Task Force report and its recommendations aimed at building a safer and more prosperous North America. Economic pros- perity and a world safe from terrorism and other security threats are no doubt inextricably linked. While governments play an invaluable role in both regards, we must emphasize the imperative that economic investment be led and perpetuated by the private sector. There is no force proven like the market for aligning incentives, sourcing capital, and producing results like financial markets and profit-making businesses. This is simply necessary to sustain a higher living standard for the poorest among us—truly the measure of our success. As such, investment funds and financing mechanisms should be deemed attractive instruments by those committing the capital and should only be developed in conjunction with market participants. Heidi S. Cruz

I agree the difference between Trump and Cruz is Trump takes ownership of his actions Cruz does not. I had not realized that tell just now. if trump decides to go after an opponent on an issue or use rhetoric to paint a narrative about his opponent it is him that does it where Cruz uses others to do it. this reminds me of how the Clintons operate and rubs me the wrong way.

Would be any interesting general election if all Trump supporters wrote in his name as he has far more votes than Cruz and it appears may have more than Hillary if the illegals continue to try to destroy our 1st amendment.

Hillary plays the "woman card."

"A vote for me is a vote for a Fully-Fornicating Society.
I pledge non-stop aggression over the unborn.
I will end the punishment of an unwanted birth."

================================================

HILLARY'S "HEART OF GOLD" CAMPAIGN STRATEGY Plans to showcase her "kind-heartedness and compassion;" dedicated to sucking-up to the snarling abortion worshippers. Will use the classic Democrat MO---upping the political ante to pump her sagging numbers.

===========================================

Hillary knows the genital-sniffing Planned Parenthood abortion worshippers who populate the Dem party are crazy over the Clintons.

Bill and Hillary are the living breathing embodiment of The Fully-Fornicating Society w/ none of the evidence of sexual activity.....the "nuisance" of an actual child being born.

Hillary and Bill successfully exploited Bill's ability to have sex w/ younger women.

Bill gives sex-obsessed lefties a vicarious thrill....visions of the married, gray-haired Clinton getting a young WH intern to crawl under his desk to give him a BJ is better than Viagra.

It's a 2 way street, start respecting him and he will start respecting them.

It depends what “Republican unity” means. If it means Trump plus tens of millions of voters from every party and he doesn’t get that, then of course he loses; but that’s not happening. If it means Trump is not “unified” with some GOPe ash holes - so what?
