Internal documents show Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump's campaign advisers are projecting that the billionaire businessman will secure more than 1,400 delegates at the Republican National Convention in July, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.
That total greatly exceeds the 1,237 delegates necessary to secure the nomination on the first ballot.
The projection was in an internal campaign memo sent to Trump surrogates Tuesday night, after Trump secured a convincing win in the New York primary. It called the front-runner's win in New York "YUGE" and included talking points to use in media interviews.
It advised the surrogates to talk about the "rigged" primary process and to slam the Republican National Committee (RNC).
"The RNC has a lot to answer for as do those who are part of the donor class and the party establishment," the memo said.
"This movement scares the hell out of them and the people scare them, so they will do whatever they can to keep power."
The memo also slams presidential rival Ted Cruz. Trump conspicuously didn't reference his usual nickname of "Lyin' Ted" on Tuesday night after winning the New York primary.
"The Cruz spin machine produces more lies than anything else," the memo said.
It also includes talking points about policy issues and advises people to reference Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton's email scandal moving forward into the general election.
"Hillary email scandal is going to loom large over the next several months. If anyone else had done what she had done, they would already be in prison," it advised people to say of Clinton.
The Associated Press said Wednesday that Cruz was mathematically eliminated from securing the nomination on the first ballot, making Trump the only candidate who could get the nomination before the convention in July.
"We are headed to a contested convention at this point," Cruz said Wednesday.
"Nobody is getting to 1,237," he told Philadelphia radio host Chris Stigall.
GOP presidential candidate John Kasich has long predicted a contested convention.
Trump currently has 845 delegates, followed by Cruz with 559 and Kasich with 147, according to The Associated Press.
“A little too over confident in negativity are we? Take yourself less seriously, its healthier.”
Just trying to counter the ridiculously, biased Trumpian propaganda that saturates these pages.
Yes best case predictions are 1,300 and that’s more than enough. There is going to be no contested convention except in the mind of Ted Cruz and his demented supporters.
We’ll see.
And any amount of bloviating on FR won’t change the outcome.
Trump will bury Hillary in the general election......
You’re buying the Establishment narrative perpetuated by Cruz....
They put this out as a scare tactic....
Guess it worked with you....
Exactly! People are suckers and basing an entire campaign upon cooked polls about hypothetical matchups is mindless. Look at who’s actually getting the votes people!
Our NY values weren’t too bad last night :)
This thing is over. Think about it. Now that only Trump cam mathematically win the required delegates, few are going to attend Cruz rallies and donate if it’s a foregone conclusion. Playing spoiler is not much of a motivation to work hard or donate money to a candidate. With such a lop-sided victory in NY, and similar results soon to occur in the next 2 weeks, Trump is in a commanding position.
Trump is finally listening to his handlers. Under duress, Trump is being forced to listen to his kids and advisors, and they are telling him it’s his to lose. Stop shooting yourself in the foot, and instigating Twitter flame wars. This worked early on to get you free media, but now it’s time to leave your ego at the door....if you really want to win. He is going to take the air out of the ball and sit on his lead. Cruz’s only hope of late has been to goad Trump into a pathetic attempt to engage in a public cat fight. While Trump admittedly looks rude, arrogant and petulant, Cruz just comes across as mean, obnoxious and desperate.....and frankly unhinged. He tried to out Trump Trump, but looks like a bad copycat.
There will not be a brokered convention either. Even if there were enough motivated, non-Trump voters left to cast a primary ballot, and are so hellbent on denying Him the needed delegates, It’s too little too late. Trump at worst will be within a gnat’s butt of victory. A simple deal with Kasich or Rubio puts him well over the top....VP doesn’t even have to be on the table. Trump is in a much better bargaining position than they are. If they stupidly choose to throw in with Cruz and roll the dice on the RNC handing the nomination to Cruz, and they in turn will get a VP or cabinet slot, they are delusional. Cruz is only being used as a means to stop Trump. I stand behind whoever the Republican candidate is, but this thing is over. It’s time to rally around the candidate and defeat Joe Biden.
The fact remains that both Hilliary and Sanders got MORE VOTES then Trump did.
“Hell bury himself and all of you with him.”
Better buried by him than Hillary.
I’m predicting that - CT, DE, MD, PA, RI, IN, WV, OR & CA will go Trump purple also.
The demographics and the electoral college pretty much guarantees it.
Big deal, there are far more registered Dems as Repubs. Wait til the Independents and Blue Collar Dems come out.
Well then, LYIN’ Ted, has morphed into KAMIKAZE Ted...
so appropriate it’s sickening.
Speculation on my part: Some of our Tedster paid poster daily drive-by ZOTEES have already, like E.T. “phoned home” to tell Teddy that the conservative “ZOT” is underway, all over the nation, on bell weather web sites for conservatives.
Teddy boy and the GOP e have crossed the rubicon with their defiance after last night’s victories. And I see signs everywhere that the ranks of the GOP e faithful are deserting and/or sandbagging their positions in view of what now appears inevitable.
Decapitation of the GOPe regime... is in process.
+1
That could realistically happen. As Trump gets closer, he will get more votes. No one wants to waste their vote on a loser.
And so we have a Leftist veep and a wienie SoS?
Yuck!
