A proposed distracted walking bill in New Jersey would ban pedestrians from walking and texting simultaneously, with the possibility of a $50 fine or even a short jail sentence.
The measure, which has been proposed by New Jersey Assembly Congresswoman Pamela Lampitt, is to try and reduce pedestrian deaths as a result of distraction from mobile devices.
The law would ban people from walking while texting on any form of electronic communication device unless it is totally hands free.
Those caught could face fines of up to $50, 15 days imprisonment, or both, which is the same penalty as jaywalking.

Pamela Lampitt has a big “D” behind her name, of course.
I’d think texting and getting killed would be enough of punishment or deterrence...
The DOJ will insist that “people of color” be exempted.
Why don’t they just mandate air bags on all smart phones?
If this gets to Christie’s desk, I hope he vetoes it.
well, what else ever could have happened with a full time government, anywhere.
laws, laws, laws and more laws.
..just another way of robbing people....before thinning the herd
Yeah. No.
The problem is that if you happen to inadvertently injure one of these walking-texters, YOU can wind up in trouble.

we have laws here in my state against texting and driving...
now only if they would enforce them
I do some windshield time each day in a pickup so I get a good view from above, and so many drivers are just texting away oblivious to all around them, especially in rush hour
Well they’ve already outlawed thinking while voting so it’s all good.
What about walking and emailing or walking and freeping?
Will walking and thinking be far behind?
What about walking and NOT thinking?
Shhhhh! NJ would do that. We’d all get stuck with phones with air bags that would be a safety hazard.
Oh... I first thought this was to keep a clearly addled Bill Clinton from following Hillary around.
Jail?
We need a “distracted shopping” bill.
I’m forever coming up against morons in the grocery store who suddenly stop in the middle of the aisle to talk or text.
I feel so bad, cause I always “accidently” bump my shopping cart into them as they stand there.
Oops, sorry.
I agree. Though I usually stop and text. Heck, I tripped over a parking block while talking on the phone. ‘Lucky a bad abrasion just off my left knee was all I got.
