A battlefield of 3,250 years ago in Germany is yielding remains of wounded warriors, wooden clubs, spear points, flint and bronze arrowheads and bronze knives and swords. The gruesome scene, frozen in time by peat, is unlike anything else from the Bronze Age in Northern Europe, where, researchers thought, large-scale warfare didnt begin until later. Analysis of the remains of the 130 men, most between ages 20 and 30, found so far shows some may have been from hundreds of kilometers awayPoland, Holland, Scandinavia and Southern Europe.
The hand-to-hand combat of the battle, which may have involved thousands of people and may have taken place in just one day, was brutal, according to an article about archaeological research at the Tollense site in Science magazine. And it involved horses. Today, although the researchers believe theyve unearthed just 2 to 3 percent of the battlefield, they have found the remains of the humans and of five horses.

A word to the wise:
This is what happens when the new kids in town try to make beer illegal.
Or impose Sharia Law on non-Muslims.
Oooohhhhhh......
Well, if they dig up a bunch of casualties among a bunch of empty whiskey barrels, then it probably was a family reunion for my ancestors.
The sure sign is empty liquor barrels. My family doesn’t fight until after all the booze is gone.
My guess is that there were multiple battles over multiple years and the peat moss is screwing with the dating.
I wonder why they would draw that conclusion...?
Did men simply just start having large scale battles on a whim ?
Human nature is the same today as it was 3,500 years ago...
*The gruesome scene, frozen in time by peat*
Tis a beautiful country though; lush rolling hills, and the peat, ah the peat.
Yeah that is possible, but how about a shotgun wedding gone bad..... I really hate those. ;-)
Debate continues over whether Stone Age people were peaceful or warlike - See more at: http://www.ancient-origins.net/news-history-archaeology/unexpected-and-gruesome-battle-1250-bc-involved-4000-men-across-northern-020781#sthash.h5pXjAK8.dpuf
I think I’d guess warlike.
Strange, I always assumed all the “big time” feuding and fighting way back then occurred around the Mediterranean.
It said that only 150 have been found so far, but even more may have been involved.
That’s my family!
Can’t fight their way out of a wet paper sack, but really happy drunks.
There’s a youtube of this already.
If you listen at 13:43 you can hear someone offscreen say:
“Crush your enemies. See them driven before you. Hear the lamentations of the women. That is best.”
“men, most between ages 20 and 30, found so far shows some may have been from hundreds of kilometers away”
Hmmm....sounds familiar. Isn’t something going on today involving large groups of men this age far from home?
I am going to make a guess here and some may not like it.
I suspect that the oldest son inherited the family farm and/or herds of livestock, and the younger sons had no other way to earn a living except to become mercenaries.
A conflict of this size usually involves Kingship.
I believe what we are seeing here is a large battle involving royals and their forces, many of whom were mercenaries from all across Europe.
Sounds like the whole continent was involved. Did they have Muslim invader problems back then? :)
The welferites run out of money and aksed richies to share.
Richies said go getta job......aaaand heads were cracked.
Remember like it was today.
Interestingly enough, they appear to have included mounted warriors. In before the "Sea Peoples" nonsense starts.

Only the dead have seen the last of war.
That dude for sure.
If I recall correctly, this was a period of upheaval in the Middle East as well, with the Sea Peoples’ raids. Recent studies suggest that changes in climate from warm periods to cold periods weakened some civilizations and “stirred the pot” with migratory invasions. This was one of those times.
