Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has suspended his presidential campaign after a dismal showing on Super Tuesday.
Carson was one of the last five candidates remaining in the Republican presidential race. But he was unable to come in higher than fourth place in any of the 11 states to vote on March 1.
In Massachusetts, he came in fifth, with just 2.6 percent of the vote.
According to an Associated Press tally, Carson has earned just eight delegates so far. Frontrunner Donald Trump has 319, and 1,237 are needed to win the nomination.
Carson's full statement is below:
_______________________________________________
I have decided not to attend the Fox News GOP Presidential Debate tomorrow night in Detroit. Even though I will not be in my hometown of Detroit on Thursday, I remain deeply committed to my home nation, America. I do not see a political path forward in light of last evening's Super Tuesday primary results. However, this grassroots movement on behalf of "We the People" will continue. Along with millions of patriots who have supported my campaign for President, I remain committed to Saving America for Future Generations. We must not depart from our goals to restore what God and our Founders intended for this exceptional nation.
I appreciate the support, financial and otherwise, from all corners of America. Gratefully, my campaign decisions are not constrained by finances; rather by what is in the best interests of the American people.
I will discuss more about the future of this movement during my speech on Friday at CPAC in Washington, D.C.
Now for Kasich and Rubio to drop out.
He will endorse Trump, and here comes your next Surgeon General. Top doctor, so to say.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Go Cruz!
I saw this posted earlier. It says he is withdrawing from the debate, but does it really say that he’s suspending his campaign? Don’t get me wrong, I think he SHOULD suspend. But the wording of this seems weird.
Carson needed more fire, in my opinion. Too soft spoken.
That said, he truly wants whats best for America and I wish him the best of luck in the future.
The CNN Reporterette last night was saying she heard rumors that the GOPe was going to offer Carson full backing if he drops out and runs for the FL Senate seat.
I hope you’re right
RE: He will endorse Trump, and here comes your next Surgeon General. Top doctor, so to say.
Surgeon General is a waste of talent for a guy of Carson’s stature and abilities. I was thinking Health and Human Services Secretary for ANY Republican administration.
How do you get four? Trump, Cruz Rubio.
Oh wow, are you counting Kasich? Hmmph. I suppose technically....
You find that on the Internet today. Also talk that he turned down a run for the seat (Rubio's) last year.
But is that really something they could (or would) deliver on? If somebody better positioned to run for the seat decides to try for it, Ben may end up high and dry.
Ben can continue on with the fruit salad of life
Well Carson would be an improvement on the current occupant of the FL Senate Seat.
Dr. Carson is far TOO NICE for this ridiculous process.
Thank you sir, for your time and service. Without question, you did raise the quality of the dialogue.
Proud to have voted for him yesterday.
This was inevitable. He’s a nice guy, genuinely interested in open and civil discussion of the issues, is definitely a patriot and not a typical back-stabbing politician. He’s also not, IMHO, suitable for the Presidency.
It will be interesting to see who his supporters move to. I’m not sure that he’ll endorse anyone, but I’m pretty sure that he will support whomever the nominee is. Left to their own devices, I would have to believe that Trump will garner about 60% of them. Cruz would’ve been in the running for maybe 40% himself...until the Iowa dirty tricks. Now I see Cruz getting maybe 15% - 20%, and Rubio getting the rest. Net win for Trump - just my opinion.
Carson seems like a good man. I wish him the best with whatever the future holds.
He said he’ll speak about it Friday, which is when He’ll probably officially get out.
It’s deal-making time until then.
Think he will remember the early Trump statements?
