Dogs really are man's best friend, it seems, as researchers have shown they can recognise emotions in humans by combining information from different senses.
They are the only creatures outside of humans who have been observed to have that ability.

"Our study shows that dogs have the ability to integrate two different sources of sensory information into a coherent perception of emotion in both humans and dogs.
"To do so requires a system of internal categorisation of emotional states. This cognitive ability has until now only been evidenced in primates and the capacity to do this across species only seen in humans."
Co-author Professor Daniel Mills, from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Lincoln, said: "It has been a long-standing debate whether dogs can recognise human emotions. Many dog owners report anecdotally that their pets seem highly sensitive to the moods of human family members.
"However, there is an important difference between associative behaviour, such as learning to respond appropriately to an angry voice, and recognising a range of very different cues that go together to indicate emotional arousal in another.
"Our findings are the first to show that dogs truly recognise emotions in humans and other dogs.

Great looking crew.
Yeah, my mule totally gets me.
LMAO! How true!
Since you mentioned it, I remember reading about them, even as to them recognizing individual humans. The black birds (crows, ravens, even jackdaws) seem to be the most intelligent, except for the parrots. But I really don’t know about the owls...
Nathan B. "Nate" Bruckenthal (July 17, 1979 â April 24, 2004)
On April 24, 2004, Bruckenthal and two U.S. Navy sailors were killed while intercepting a waterborne suicide attack on the Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminal off the coast of Iraq in the northern Persian Gulf.
An account of the attack was included the May 2004 issue of U.S. Coast Guard Reservist magazine:
" In the early evening hours of April 24, a dhow (a lateen-rigged Arabian vessel) approached an oil terminal in the Persian Gulf. Bruckenthal, trained as both a boarding team member and boarding officer, was accompanied by one other Coast Guardsman and five sailors from the United States Navy. The group boarded a rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB), taking off in pursuit. As the crew was poised to board the dhow, an explosion was detonated. Two Navy petty officers also died as a result of the waterborne attack: PO1 Michael J. Pernaselli, 27, of Monroe, N.Y., and PO2 Christopher E. Watts, 28, of Knoxville, Tenn. Injured were three Navy sailors and BM3 Joseph T. Ruggiero, USCG, 23, from Revere, Mass., who received the Purple Heart."
Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi of al-Qaeda in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack.
Bruckenthal was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and the Purple Heart, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. He was buried at Section 60, Site 7978 of Arlington National Cemetery on May 7, 2004, where he is currently interred.
Bruckenthal was the first United States Coast Guardsman killed in action action since the Vietnam War.
:)
Goldfish recognize individual humans.
This test was about being able to recognize and distinguish different emotions in humans.
It's been shown that dogs can smell cancer in humans. Human nurses have told me that they can smell immediately imminent death in a patient.
Thanks for sharing that. Very interesting.
And then there was the cat in the nursing home who could sense that a patient was dying and crawl in bed with her.
Of course, nobody in the nursing home wanted that cat around her.
Be back
I have, for a long time, thought that dogs were the second-most intelligent creature on Earth!
Well, actually the first, if you toss in a bunch of Dems...
I have network cameras in my house so I can see what my dogs are doing when I’m away.
Without fail, as soon as I make the decision to head home, Seven will wake up from her nap and “assume the position”....her arms over the back of the sofa, watching out the window.
20 minutes later, when I pull in, there she is, looking out the window.
We used to think she was just hearing our vehicles coming up the lane but found out she was anticipating our arrival much earlier, based solely on that moment that we decided to come home.
It’s kinda freaky.
That’s been verified time and time again.
It’s not “like they have ESP”.... they DO possess some perception(s) we simply don’t know about!
The animals or the people?
That seems rather cruel.
*Word*
I have ran two Rangers into the ground. My small dog wants nothing to do with my F150.
My son built the bombs that killed the scum.
