Mosul, Iraqs second-largest city, has long been hard for the central government to control because of its combustible mix of Arabs and Kurds. The first time I visited Mosul was in August 2003 when a tenuous calm was maintained by the 101st Airborne Division. Its commander, a then-obscure two-star general named David Petraeus, had on his own initiative opened the Syrian border to trade, struck deals with Syria and Turkey to provide badly needed electricity, restored telephone service, and held elections to elect local leaders. Along the way he also managed to kill Saddam Husseins poisonous offspring Uday and Qusay.

This is actually supposed to come out in the June 23rd edition but is already posted on line. I think I got the print version here to help alleviate some of the ad content. But, I did hear/read something yesterday that the ISIS is so brutal that even al qida is trying to keep them at arms length. Regardless, I guess a few hundred headless bodies along side the road won't deter the lyin' king from taking action. No sirree. He's probably tee'in up right now. FORE!

Can you give me a good reason that we should go back in and spill American blood to save people (muslims) that will end up hating us infidels anyway?

That’s just old, old news. That’s history! We can’t move forward if you just keep dredging up old news!
The key point to remember here is that Obama is getting a badly needed stint of golf out in Palm Springs right now, and your tired questions about yesterday are just politically driven - you right wing nutjob. [/s :o)]

We need the military on our southern borders to stop the terrorists coming up with the children from Central America.

I think this just shows that there’s no hope for these Islam dominated cultures. Our policy in the so called WOT should have been extreme isolationalism. Keep the cancer of Islam over there and don’t allow it to get out of the mideast. But, that was never gonna happen.

I accept that OBL is dead, that it happened outside the Obama’s directive, that hell was paid to those who accomplished that mission, and the Obama subsequently made sure no decision making personnel would oppose him again.

The Saudis are funding this “Islamist” offensive. The Iranians will intervene to prevent Baghdad from falling. The Saudis want to create an Arabic speaking Sunni confederation composing of large parts of Iraq and Syria to confront Iran. The Iranians will do what they can to prevent the establishment of a hostile Sunni state on their borders. Battle lines will harden but the political situation will remain fluid. Not clear if the Saudis will be able to consolidate their confederation long term. Best for the US to not get involved.

Unfortunately, when the history books about this period in Iraq are written it will be shown that Saddam Hussein was far more effective at dealing with radical Islam in Iraq than George W. Bush ever was.
This is why you don't let Beltway @ssholes put U.S. military personnel in harm's way in some sh!thole halfway around the world. But then I thought we supposedly learned that lesson after Vietnam, didn't we?
