WINNIPEG -- After sending her children to daycare with a lunch of roast beef, carrots and potatoes, Kristen Bartkiw was fed a $10 fine.
The reason: An unbalanced meal.
Despite the presence of a meat, vegetable, fruits and juice, the meal was missing a grain. The solution was to give the Rossburn, Man., school teacher a $10 fine and give her children Ritz Crackers as a supplement.
"I don't blame the daycare," said Bartkiw, who was actually on the board of The Little Cub's Den when they decided to start fining parents.
According to Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care when at a daycare a child's lunch must include a milk product, a meat, a grain and two servings of fruit or vegetables. If the child is missing one of these the daycare provider must provide a supplement.
"We chose to do it as a more of a deterrent, because parents were sending their children a lunch with only a pizza pop," she said.
Under provincial rules, that means that the daycare would have to provide the missing nutritional items.
According to Walmart.com, a serving of about five Ritz crackers contains 80 calories, 4.5 g of fat and 150 mg of sodium.
A statement provided by the provincial government read, "The province requires child-care centres to ensure children have nutritious and balanced meals and snacks throughout the day. These can be supplied by the centre or the parents.
"The province would expect centres to work with parents in educating them regarding what consists of nutritious meals/snacks."
The daycare eventually dropped this policy and chose instead to provide children with a hot lunch.
"It was just too difficult for parents to follow these strict deadlines," Bartkiw said.

IF you had cereal for breakfast or just scoffed a sandwich for lunch, maybe don't read this. Because grains are destroying your brain, according to this doctor.
David Perlmutter, a renowned neurologist and president of the Perlmutter Health Center in Naples, Florida, says there's a close relationship between lifestyle, our modern diet and dementia.
Dr Perlmutter, who has just released a New York Times best-selling book Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar - Your Brain's Silent Killers says it's not just unhealthy carbs that should be cut.

My response: “Send more notices. House short on toilet paper. Kiss kiss.”
If parents are volunteering to subject themselves to this policy they deserve everything they get. That parents volunteer to subject themselves to this policy tells the rest of us we are doomed as a free society.
We don’t need grains in the diet.
Exactly. In this case, the mother in question was actually on the board of the day care center when they adopted the stupid policy of fining parents. LOL.
LIKE
The child must be removed from the clutches of that stupid mother.
She must be fined thousands for being such a twerp. I am being polite.
King George never did anything this bad...
Start torching these places and it will stop....j/k of course
okay...I’ll be walking into heavy now...it’s over people...any parent that would put up with this - well hand over through voting theirs and everyone’s rights to whoever just so they don’t have to think anymore...too many morons having kids and too many morons killing kids - and the rest of us - well, we are screwed!
Here’s a novel idea:
Take care of your own kids instead of outsourcing their parenting.
And we wonder why there is an obesity problem? People only need to eat a balanced diet throughout the day; eating every single item at every meal leads to an excess of calories, which leads to obesity. Furthermore, when a child so young becomes obese, her or his body is changed in such a way that he or she will have to deal with weight issues throughout life.
There is also the issue that schools should not be deciding what kids eat. Educate the parents on proper nutrition, fine. But dictate how they should feed the kids? Just no!
At the age of two, my son would eat nothing but yogurt and granola bars...
Somewhere soon a mom will get a fine because she put a grain in the lunch and some other young skull full of mush in the lunchroom is gluten intolerant.
Right, we need choice in our diet.
The day is coming when a mom who packs her kid a PB&J sandwich for school lunch will receive a summons for having potentially exposed other kids to a dangerous substance that might cause an allergic reaction.
And liberals will all nod and clap in approval like the little fascist piglets they have become.
Besides the obvious outrage at this, the note at the bottom says that parents will be charged $5 per missing item, so why was the individual charged $10 for missing the 1 grain?
They fined her once for each kid.

Peanut products of any kind are banned in most school districts in Massachusetts.
