Perry dominates in South Carolina (PPP Poll has Perry up by 23 pts.)
Public Policy Polling ^ | 8/30/11 | PPP

Raleigh, N.C. – If there was any question that Rick Perry is the new Republican presidential frontrunner before now, PPP’s latest poll of South Carolina confirms it. A week ago, PPP showed Perry jumping to a narrow lead in first-caucus Iowa. Now, he has a double-digit lead in what will likely be the third-voting state. Perry tops with 36% to Mitt Romney’s 16%, Michele Bachmann’s 13%, Herman Cain’s 9%, Newt Gingrich’s 8%, Ron Paul’s 5%, Rick Santorum’s 4%, and Jon Huntsman’s 2%. This is a sea change from when PPP last polled the race in June, with Perry not included. Romney led with 30% to Cain’s and Gingrich’s 15%, Bachmann’s 13%, and Paul’s 10%.

If Sarah Palin joins the fray, it has no impact on Perry’s dominance but a lot on Bachmann’s standing. Palin would place third at 10% behind Perry still at 36%, Romney at 13%, followed by Cain’s 9%, and Bachmann and Gingrich tied at 7%.

“I’ve addressed his own record. If the information bothers you, reconsider your options.”

You also criticized “conservatives” for spouting Demo polls showing Perry’s lead, while failing to address the hypocrisy of those “conservatives” who spout Demo critiques of Perry to support their anti-Perry agenda.

No, Free Republic was "created" to support anything you believe and every candidate you wrap your arms and legs around. Because, as we know, to be otherwise is just those darn RINOs takin' over.

Don't ya just hate it when people like other candidates? Ya know what? Its them Build-A-Burgers!!! They're everywhere!!!

On matters political you are such a sensible fellow. This is not the first time I have been tempted to say so.

Glad you agree....my remark is no more foolish then that you made. Nobody on FR is carrying the democratic agenda. Using that just shows the stupidity of some who cannot come up with facts to debate.

It seems to me that both parties are troubled by the candidacy of true Conservatives. Bachmann for example, is considered by the Republican leadership to be somewhat of a sell-out, starting the Tea Party Caucus and standing with the Tea Party in their refusal to vote for the debt ceiling increase.

Cain is probably seen pretty much the same way, in that he is not your average moderate Republican. The man truly seems to get it. I need to know more about him, but this is how I see him to this point.

I see Bachmann and Cain as rather tried and true Conservatives.

I see Romney and Perry as moderate Republicans. On some matters Perry is better than Romney, but I think they are both main-stream party governors.

In the same manner that I think the Left was rather happy to see McCain get the nod in 2008, I think the Left would rather see Romney or Perry vs Bachmann or Cain.

One of my close family relatives actually voted for McCain in 2008, and they’re a flaming 70s liberal on most matters.

What good does it do us to loft people 70s flaming liberals can vote for?

For the record, I do not see Romney or Perry a being as bad as McCain. McCain has been undercutting Conservatism for decades. He has had working relationships with Soros and most of the worst Leftists in government.

At the present time, I haven’t settled on one.

Pick one yourself. Support them until Perry wins the nomination over your objection, then fall in behind him.

I can’t see a reason why that would bother you.

When you have demonstrated that you understand this much, we can move on.

I am not trying to pick the exact candidate you must support. There’s more than one Conservative out there. You chose. Push them as hard as you can, then come back to Perry if he’s the solid winner you think he is.

Look, if you think Obama stands a fantastic chance of beating Cain, you and I disagree.

If we put our strength behind a solid person, they will win in 2012. They’ll win by more than 1% of the vote too.

Some interesting reads on Perry:

Perry record is one of Big Govt expansion and cronyism, aka, crony capitalism.. as well as his hypocrisy of saying one thing, but doing then opposite..such as on illegal Immigrants, and giving them tuition assistance, and Border Security, to accepting the Fed’s money to balance his Budget with, instead of using Texas resources and revenue, and by cutting excessive govt. spending.

He created 90% of Texas jobs, through the govt. sector, not the private sector.. as verified by his own Texas State Board Registry of Labor Statistics and Records, thus he is a big govt. liberal Republican party RINO.. so as he is being vetted, and being criticized rightly so, for his record, which is absolutely legitimate, thus his foundation claims of conservatism id crumbling as we speak.. from both sides of the aisle.!!

Your nonsense about Bush is pathetic. There was NO more conservative candidate available than the conservative governor of the most conservative state in the union. Pretending otherwise is deceptive. Bush was critical after the 911 attacks. Would you have preferred Al Gore? Really?

How can anyone who is politically astute believe MB or Cain is politically viable in ANY way?

Wow. You have the nerve to question people who reference a "Democrat Poll", but seem dedicated to puking up all of Rachel Maddow's and Barney Frank's favorite anti-Bush propaganda.

To trash the man who made every decision and cut every deal that was required in order to secure the necessary military funding to protect the country, is really disgusting. I always assume people are honest and smart enough to understand that George Bush before 9/11 was a very different man from the one that appeared after 9/11. And I'm always amazed at the willful ignorance.

RINO central is right. You can spot the pimps pretty easily—they utterly trash any other republican that isn’t their fav.

Then they’ll turn right around and call themselves “Reagan Republicans!”

Read your reply and thought, time to chime in.

While its true McCain has been undercutting conservatism for years, not to mention being a real sob. Romney remains an even worse candidate for the GOP in 2012. Since 2007, thread after thread on FR made it crystal clear that Romney was a lifelong liberal who rejected both the Reagan agenda and the Contract With America. His flip flops on abortion, guns, immigration and other issues are legendary. Romney's rhetoric over the last 4 years favoring conservatism is nothing but the opportunism of political expediency. Willard remains a phony and a fraud.

Just as Fred Thompson knocked down Rudy Giuliani in 2007, Rick Perry deserves kudos for knocking Romney down from his #1 ranking in 2011. Something Bachmann and Cain couldn't do. Will Perry be the nominee? I don't know, but right now he's tearing up the field.

So what you are saying is that who does the poll is more important than the polls accuracy?

I don't really believe in polls anymore. They are used to drive public opinion, not measure it.

Bachmann won’t win the nomination but I see no need for her to withdraw and have no animosity towards her. My preferences are Palin and Perry. They are as conservative as can win the nomination and either would be 10X the president our current clown is.

As far as conventional wisdom goes, I don't see any problem with urging that.  The problem is, as Conservatives we pride ourselves in not accepting conventional wisdom.  I don't wish to advocate we not accept it to the point of absurdity, but we are a long way from that at this point.

Bachmann, Cain, some yet to emerge Conservative, this is the time to support them.  They have espoused our ideals.  Bachmann has been doing it for quite some time.  She hasn't had to reference a long list of things she did in the past, but has now changed her mind.  She is a breath of fresh air.  So is Cain.

Could she or Cain win if everyone on Free Republic got behind them and pushed?  I'm not convinced they couldn't.   On the same token, I'm not totally convinced they could either.  Will we ever know if we pass up this opportunity?  Can we really look ourselves in the face each morning knowing we abandoned Bachmann and Cain before the dye was cast?  That's what I'm saying here.

As for Palin, she hasn't stepped in.  I'm not convinced she's going to.  She would not be my first choice if she did.  Her actions over time have caused me to not see her as the Conservative other folks do.

This makes it sound like I have an impossible hurdle set up.  That's not really true.  If someone has been standing up and standing out promoting the ideals I have incorporated into my life, I'm going to be loyal to them.  Right now that person is Bachmann.  I am not convinced she is the person I will wind up supporting no matter what, but knowing what I do at this point, that is where my loyalties are.  I don't generally mention her as my current choice, because people automatically think Bachmann when they read my comments.  I am not committed to Bachmann on any level other than because she is a Conservative affiliated with the Tea Party.  I also like Cain very much.  I could easily fall in behind another Conservative if one comes forth.

We live in a time where the public is desperate to see change.  The Tea Party emerged as a result of that.  Backmann has been helpful to the Tea Party in Congress.  I believe she is well respected by Tea Party members.  Could she catch fire with a concerted effort by the Tea Party with help from folks like us?

I'd hate to think we would deny ourselves the possibility of a Bachmann/Cain White House, with a majority of the Republican House composed of Tea Party members, and a simple majority of Republicans in the Senate.

Under those circumstances, we would roll back Liberalism literally decades.  Under a regular Republican party player, that isn't going to happen.

This is what is on my mind.  Call me crazy if you want folks, we have the best opportunity to change things for the better, that we have had since long before Reagan was even thought of.

Imagine a Reagan with a Tea Party House, and a Republican majority Senate.

Perry can claim he is a Tea Party sympatico all he wants.  McCain tried it too.  There are very few people who actually are, at their core.

That type of person will get my support until they are officially eliminated.  When I see someone getting massive support short of that, it's going to sadden me considering what's at stake.

Folks, we had six years of a Republican White House, House, and Senate majority.  How much did we roll back Liberal entrenchment during that time?

Can we afford another moderate Republican, considering what we could have?

I understand PPP is a liberal-leaning polling organization, but as you mentioned, I have also noted their polls to be in line with the entire round of them as well, conservative polling organizations, liberal ones, and everything in between, with Perry leading by tremendous measures in every single polling agency.

Also, while I don’t give a lick of credibility to liberal news articles and commentaries, I do think the liberal polling organizations are there for helping the liberals see what they have to work with, what they have to deal with, and what consequently their next and future steps need to be as liberals and/or progressives.

If the progressive side doesn’t have SOME kind of polling that helps them see what is really going on, how will they have a clue as to how to handle what’s going on? I’m just thinking we should not completely discount PPP polls simply because the other side is polling people.

For PPP to distort their polls at this time would only serve to hurt the liberal planning sessions! I’m giving them a look at and am verifying with other polls too. It makes for a well-rounded picture of reality.

Thanks for the article, CA Conservative!
