Health Ministry to launch new unit to oversee production in 2012; imports would be tenfold more expensi

Dr. Ronni Gamzi, director-general of the Health Ministry, decided on Thursday to establish a unit within the ministry to manage the supervision and supply of medical marijuana and to serve as an agency for this purpose according to the demands of an international agreement on the subject.

The unit will begin operating in January, 2012.

It was also decided that medical cannabis will continue to be grown in Israel for at least two years, because imports would be tenfold more expensive.

Good on ‘em. I read on the cover of Navy Times sitting on the magazine rack at the checkout on base at the Navy Exchange here a couple of days ago that the FDA has approved trials of the use of cannabis for treatment of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) in vets. Just because something can be abused doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have medical utility. Otherwise, why would substance abuse experts pontificate on people’s “self-medicating”? If cannabis can relieve the post-traumatic stress of combat, why in the he!! can’t it be used to relieve post-bad-day-at-the-office stress?? There are substances out there that are way, way, WAY more dangerous than this common plant. Maybe if law enforcement were to focus their efforts on those items, they might be able to make a substantial dent in products/substances that are causing the really grave harm to society.
“Jail: Marijuana’s only bad effect” may be cliche and overlooks some of the pitfalls of its use, but it is a lot closer to the truth than the bs we’ve been spoon-fed on this issue for the last 80 years or so.
As a federalist, I say let the individual states decide how they want to treat the cultivation, possession and use of this relatively benign drug. After all, it’s way safer than having an ineligible Marxist usurper in control of the country!

It would almost certainly be medically wiser to take it in vaporized form than literal smoke with all the crud that goes along with it. A marijuana equivalent of N’joy. That said, it usually takes much less marijuana smoke than tobacco smoke to get the wanted effect from the respective “weed.”

I was going to say the same thing. And I also remember that some things are so lucrative and profitable, that only government could produce it at a loss. Remember how New York City ran betting parlors at a loss? I suspect Israel has the same government drones that every other country has and they'll find a way to lose money on this.

Agreed. That said, from a federalist, libertarian standpoint, I say “buyer beware” and let the consumers decide. Informed consumers can decide for themselves whether or not to partake. FReedom requires self restraint. Where individuals lack thereof, the law should be brought to bear against those that act contrary to said law. The argument against so-called “hate crimes” legislation has the same basis: If you beat/maim/kill someone in a manner other than required in self-defense then you obviously don’t “think well” of the victim, or you wouldn’t have committed the act that you did or are accused of. It doesn’t matter what you were thinking when you acted; we have laws prescribing actions against lawbreakers, and there are set penalties for violation of such. What one’s motivations are that lead to such action are entirely irrelevant,

If I had experienced the vaporizer method, which I certainly have not, I would deem it inferior to direct combustion in terms of delivery of the requisite goods. ;)

How about a marijuana felafel. Add marijuana leaves to the chickpea balls before frying them?
