Gun ‘preppers’ go mainstream as more people realize no one is immune to disaster
Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 11 July, 2011 | David Codrea

The Economic Collapse blog reports that Robert Kiyosaki is warning of an impending economic collapse—and advises on preparations that include buying guns.

By way of credentials, Kiyosaki is the author of the successful “Rich Dad Poor Dad” books, reportedly having sold over 26 million copies, and runs the Rich Dad financial education website. He co-authored “Why We Want You to be Rich” with Donald Trump.

The Economic Collapse lists 11 “sound bites” from a Kiyosaki video (see sidebar media player) that include predictions of collapse where supermarket food supplies are reduced to less than three days—presumably with no restocking in sight. Of special relevance to readers of this column:

#5"buy a gun"

#8"so come to my house and I'm armed and dangerous and I'll welcome you"

#9"we have food, we have water, we have guns, gold and silver, and cash"

The significance here is not that a probability exists for terrible societal consequences from destructive financial policies—it’s that it is now being normalized by prominent voices, and more Americans are losing confidence in the system. Which means the message will reach beyond sites like The Economic Collapse, or one of my favorite regular stops, Western Rifle Shooters Association, where they routinely call our attention to other voices like The Market Ticker, which provides detailed analysis and explanations to back up the dire commentary.

The Los Angeles riots and Hurricane Katrina, where territory was ceded by civil authority for days, were mere localized disconnects where the majority of Americans could watch things unfold on TV and make conversation about how bad things looked for "those" poor people. When these Americans no longer have TV because they have no electricity—and all that that implies—we will indeed be living in interesting times.

Thank you. He doesn’t believe that TS is going to HTF, so he’s a bit of a hard sell.

Just the fact that a Bing search on “standard loadout” returns role-playing sites in some instances will reinforce his opinion about the situation.

We are semi-isolated in a large brick house with too many windows in the middle of many acres of soybean and corn fields and only one neighbor, so it’s possible that we would be out of the fray.

I have control of the grocery shopping and have covered us well there, but the dearth of ammo alarms me.

Will keep working on him, but don’t want to make his life too miserable. Everybody hates a nag.

Only slightly different.
Flash mobs aren’t likely to eat you after you go down like a zombie would.
And zombies have no fear of firearms, nor do they use them (Except for DayOTD’s, “Bub.”).

Absolutely incorrect!

You are isolated from help, and sitting in the middle of a food source.

You WILL be a target in no uncertain terms!

Questions:

Budget?

What have you shot that “feels” right to you?

Are you urban, suburban or rural? And where do you plan on “bugging out” to?

Now select the round:
7.62x39
7.62x51
7.62x54
30-06

The x39 will limit range but is least expensive. It is also lighter so more can be carried and allows faster follow up shots. The x54 is also not expensive. Neither, being Russian have the quality control of the USA/NATO ammo and are generally not as accurate. But then you are only looking at minute of zombie. The mil-surp 3-06 is all but gone making it expensive and the x51 will do everything the 30-06 will do except handle the very heavy bullet weights used for large game.

Next, action. Past the x39 you are going up in price for semi-auto. Will a bolt or level do? What are you used to? I'm a semi guy and assume that is what people want most of the time.

but the dearth of ammo alarms me.

Then purchase it yourself in smaller quantities. Buy 2 or 3 20 round boxes a couple times a month instead of walking in with a 500 round tin. It'll cost you more but the goal will be accomplished.

If you've got a .22 LR, and you SHOULD have one, a brick of 500 costs around 20 bucks or so and takes up no room at all.

Improvise, adapt, overcome. LOL.

Most people don’t know there’s a house here — sorry I forgot to tell you about the forest around the house. But your point is well taken. No one’s going to grab soybeans and eat them out of hand from the fields, but the sweet corn is another issue, and you are correct about its being a food source and bad-guy attractant.

WHAT?

You don’t believe all those bad guys will come swishing in like a herd of angry poodles to get at that edemame?

Then purchase it yourself...

I may have to do that, and I will shortly if I can't convince Hubby to be better prepared. I can drive over to Gander Mountain with or without him, I 'spect.

No, we only have three .45 Kimber 1911s, and two revolvers, a Colt .45 and a S&W .38. Getting a couple of rifles and a shotgun is another thing on my nag list. That's why I'm always drooling over the gun porn threads.

I just hope it's not too late.

I’m surrounded by trees as well, but someone could actually walk up to the house through the trees.

I’m thinking of stashing coiled barbed wire at strategic points in the trees, ready for “deployment” if indicators show that the S(has)HTF...

Trading just one of those Kimbers will get you a new ak-74 and a thousand rounds of 5.45x39.

Get with some FRiends in your area and bundle an order with bulkammo.com.

You all get the discount without having to personally purchase the huge quantities.

May I make a recommendation or two?

First I highly recommend a Ruger 10-22. They're inexpensive, around 250 or so I think and ammo is dirt cheap. You can stack that by the thousands for not much money.

Shotgun? I recommend the Mossberg 500A pump. It's usually around 300 or so.

Rifle? Take a hard look at a Mosin Nagant. That'll run you around $100 or so and ammo is dirt cheap. A tin of 450 rounds is usually around $100 or so, too. They aren't pretty, they kick like mules, but they're damned near indestructible and will go "bang" every time you pull the trigger.

If you get one it'll need a thorough cleaning and a check by a competent gunsmith for safety purposes but other than that they're ready to go.

Forgive the long winded reply but I've put quite a bit of thought into this subject. This list will get you set up without spending thousands of dollars on fancy battle rifles and you can put what you save into additional ammo and time at the range.

Best of luck to you.

*Snort* [giggles]

Heeeeyyy! I can set up vats of fermenting soybeans ‘way down the road, and the elitist thugs will never make it past them to get to our place. Great plan. Thanks for the idea, not-so-paper tyger!

It’ll hold them off long enough for us to set up a perimeter. By the time they get Faaaabulous and prance into the yard, they’ll be doomed. Hee, hee, hee.

There is no cover close to the house, just lawn, anywhere from 20 to 40 yards wide. But the coiled barbed wire traps for non-deer-like critters who may be lurking (Sorry Lurker) in the forest sound good...

Thank you so much for that web address.

I don’t know any FReepers around here, but there are a few people who may be interested in going in with me on a large buy.

You’d think being 1-1/2 miles from the Spread Eagle Tavern would be a good place to meet FReepers, but no.

As a gentle hint, I’ll send that link to Hubby and see what he says. Maybe he can read this thread too.

Thanks a lot, all you folks. You’ve given me ammo of another sort to use on Hubby. Here’s hoping it hits the target.

I’m just copying and pasting that whole post for Hubby to read. Thank you. You’re a life saver, probably literally.
