One week after warning the distraction of repealing dont ask, dont tell could risk Marines lives, Gen. James Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, pledged to lead the effort to integrate openly gay Marines.
I, and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps [Carlton Kent], will personally lead this effort, thus ensuring the respect and dignity due all Marines, Amos said. On this matter, we look forward to further demonstrating to the American people the discipline and loyalty that have been the hallmark of the United States Marine Corps for over 235 years."
Amos statement sent to reporters came Sunday evening, one day after the Senate adopted the repeal, capping a stunning, climactic day on the chamber floor.
Marine Corps leaders have shown the most resistance to repealing the 17-year old law. Former commandant Gen. James Conway said the Corps pretty macho recruits set them apart from other services.
On Dec. 3, Amos who became the 35th commandant in October and the chiefs of the Army and Air Force told Congress they did not want repeal now, based on the results of a DOD troop survey. The survey found Marines in combat arms units much more opposed to the repeal than other elements of the force, or the complete military.

Here is Amos full statement:
"Fidelity is the essence of the United States Marine Corps. Above all else, we are loyal to the Constitution, our Commander in Chief, Congress, our Chain of Command, and the American people. The House of Representatives and the Senate have voted to repeal Title 10, US Code 654 "Policy Concerning Homosexuality in the United States Armed Forces." As stated during my testimony before Congress in September and again during hearings before the Senate Armed Services Committee earlier this month, the Marine Corps will step out smartly to faithfully implement this new policy. I, and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, will personally lead this effort, thus ensuring the respect and dignity due all Marines. On this matter, we look forward to further demonstrating to the American people the discipline and loyalty that have been the hallmark of the United States Marine Corps for over 235 years."
If repealing this nonsense is not priority number one for the new Congress, then they have given up on the country.
Pretty soon it will be all about polesitters in NASCAR.
A little something from Talledega Nights.
In other words, he will put procedure over principle.
The Commandant is a Marine in the finest tradition of his service.

Are you insane? A week ago, he was speaking OUT against the repeal. Now he will lead the way for fags to infest the Marines?
What a two-faced hypocrite. Clearly he is more interested in his cushy Washington career than being a true Marine.
Piss on him.
Please don't confuse his code of honor with being a sellout. The man spoke out against this when it was still in the time for debate. To inject his opinion during that time was huge. He knew he would end up having spoken out against at least some of his superiors (Congress).
He now has the decision of those he has pledged his service to, and sounds like he will implement it to the best of his ability. He could step down in protest, but I bet that would be akin to leaving one of his own behind in his mindset.
"Above all else, we are loyal to the Constitution, our Commander in Chief, Congress, our Chain of Command, and the American people."
I personally would prefer a person with the Commandant's loyalty to the Corps leading this implementation; if it must happen.
Sodomy, homo rape, homo orgies, acting like drag queens and bull dykes, et al, will still be prosecuted under the UCMJ by the Marine Corps. Behavior will indeed get you s***canned.
Those idiotic social engineers in the White House, the Hill and at the Pentagon who wanted to shove this crap down the throats of the military are going to get more than they bargained for. They've kicked a hornet's nest and they're going to get deservedly stun.
All kidding aside, those opposed to homosexuals in the military will leave or be kicked out, or not promoted.
Only pro-homo leadership will be allowed.
Not after the JAG ranks become full of gays.
Integration or a blind eye to sexual harrassment?
I don’t know what I would do if I found a strange hand working its way through the covers of my bunk as I was sleeping.
Perhaps he could could get the ball rolling by allowing the Sgt. Major to bugger him up the butt on national TV?
stung
I don’t see it as a sellout. After all - he had the backbone to speak out against the bogus report that Obama used to ram this pro-gay policy through congress.
Gates will follow the laws, his oath, and the legal orders of his Commander-In Chief, but we know where his heart is.
My reading on his statement is that he will do what he must under the law but he will not allow open acknowledgement or displays of homosexualism to deteriorate the disipline and efficiency of the Corps.
He cannot legally stop some from being homosexuals and he will not allow abuse of homosexuals, but he can stop them from being flaming fags and acting in any way that embarrasses the Marines Corps or other Marines or affects their combat readiness in any way.
When he says he “will personally lead this effort, thus ensuring the respect and dignity due all Marines”, I believe he is saying that he will not allow homosexuals, or their conduct, to erode the respect and dignity of the Marine Corps in general and specifically, that of the non-homosexual Marines.
Why would anyone be surprised? He has to follow the law of the land, so he’s looking to make it work, in the best way, for the Marines. Why should he be considered a sellout? What could he possibly do, short of resigning, and how could that possibly help make this situation easier for the Marines, over which he has a sworn responsibility?
Piss on Amos. Either he was WRONG last week in opposing DADT, or he’s WRONG this week in supporting the repeal.
Either way, he’s a sorry excuse for a human being.
Unlike too many at this forum, the Commandant is not a quitter. Congress by our Constitution will make the rules for governance of our Armed Forces.
For the time being, I will ignore your silly insult.
GMTA, but you said it WAY better than I did!
that crap didn’t even have a name until Clintoon gave it one, and now it has done exactly what he wanted
#26 of communist goals
Effectively, this will be a purge of the military with 0bamanites in command. The DADT is merely a vehicle for far more nefarious things..
Thank you for getting it. Marines take orders from their leaders and then they carry them out or die trying. Period.
They also do NOT leave fellow Marines to deal with the sh** and run away.
The words "Semper Fidelis" have real meaning. This man is about to live it. Keep your eye on him. There will be no unpunished illegal sexual activity on his watch.
