Add coconut, cut fat
The Times of India ^ | 9 August, 2010. | The Times of India

A diet rich in coconut oil keeps fat away and also protects against insulin resistance, a new study shows.

The study also helps explain how people who incorporate medium chain fatty acids found in coconut oil into their diets can lose body fat. Obesity and insulin resistance are major factors leading to the development of Type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is an impaired ability of cells to respond to insulin.

Nigel Turner and Jiming Ye from Sydney's Garvan Institute of Medical Research compared fat metabolism and insulin resistance in mice fed coconut oil and lard based diets.

"The medium chain fatty acids like those found in coconut oil are interesting to us because they behave very differently to the fats normally found in our diets," said study leader Turner.

"Unlike the long chain fatty acids contained in animal fats, medium chain fatty acids are small enough to enter mitochondria - the cells' energy burning powerhouses - directly where they can then be converted to energy."

"Unfortunately the downside to eating medium chain fatty acids is that they can lead to fat build up in the liver, an important fact to be taken into consideration by anyone considering using them as a weight loss therapy."

Fat storage is determined by the balance between how much fat is taken in by cells and how much of this fat is burned for energy. When people eat a high fat diet, their bodies attempt to compensate by increasing their capacity to oxidise fat, said a Garvan release.

"Obese humans usually eat 40-50 percent of their calories as fat. Our mice were fed 45 percent of their calories as fat," Turner said.

you are correct. Get the organic pure stuff made from the first sqeezings or don’t bother. This will become solid in colder temps and liquify when warmed. It smells wonderful and tastes so, well-coconutty!

Umm, have you ever noticed how obese Samoans and other South Pacific Islanders are? Eighty percent among women!

I get mine at Amazon for $23.97 and 99cent shipping for the 54oz. It’s half full yet and I’ve had it since April. Lasts a long time. For a great moisturizer, I mix it with some organic avocado oil, almond oil and some grape seed oil. My husband uses it for his left arm, the one that hangs out the window while driving truck. His skin was so thin and non elastic that he would bump it and the skin would bleed. Now with using the oils every morning before work, he has some elasticity back and no more problems. Use what nature provides for us :)

I hate the taste of coconut, but you can’t taste it when used for cooking.

It really doesn’t have a flavor even when you lick a bit of it off your finger.

Wait a cotton pickin’ minute!!!

For years we have had it drummed into our heads that coconut/ palm oil was horrible. One of the worst oils you can use.
High in saturated fat.
Theater popcorn was denounced mainly because of coconut oil.

Now it’s wonderful?? Argh!

Yeah, it’s frustrating, but maybe coconut oil-cooked popcorn will make a return. It sure was good and nothing ever matched it.

I lost 40lbs since March and am keeping it off by using coconut oil.

Are you using strictly the oil or are you doing the whole glycemic diet thing?

Just curious. I've just begun doing so, and have been reading on how coconut flour is better for you than the grain-based flours as long as you adjust for the lack of moisture when baking.

It’s about $6 for a 30 oz jar; but a little goes a long way.

It’s also a great lubricant for intimate activities. No greasy or sticky feeling.

And as others have mentioned, it’s an excellent moisturizer.

I actually went on the Hcg protocol...and it worked for me since I was hypothyroid and wasn’t able to ‘diet’ the weight off. It was pretty hard to do at first, but now that I’ve changed my whole way of eating, I’m keeping if off and feeling great. And I love my coconut oil. I also use almond flour, coconut flour and other more natural flours for cooking. Me and wheat just don’t get along well I guess.

I add almond milk to my coffee. If I add coconut oil will my coffee taste like an Almond Joy?
