Thats a good size one....Alaska has had big one’s before
Denali is well to the east of Anchorage. You can see the very top of Denali (over the other mountains) from Anchorage at the Captain Cook statue/memorial park overlooking Turnagin Arm.
Oh man....I have friends who are on vacation in Alaska.
Most people still cannot comprehend the size of Alaska, my sister came to visit me some years ago, I picked her up in Anchorage at the airport and she stayed with me at my house just north of Wasilla.
She had in her mind a travel itinerary of being in Seward one day and Fairbanks the next, and doing it by car, to her it was the same as if driving from San Jose Ca to LA.
I said yes it may be the same miles but its not the same roadwise.
I’m glad we do have a ton of quakes, it scares the bejeezus out of illegal immigrants fer sure!
It’s been 40 years since I was stationed on Shemya, and I can’t even pick it out on a map anymore - how close was this to my old post??
You ok up there!?!?!?!
My wife is in Anchorage, no messages from her so far about an earthquake.
If I remember correctly, Alaska is more than double the size of Texas. I also remember seeing an image of Alaska overlaid on the western US and seeing that it’s very comparable in size, and the western states are not small.
The state sells land, (still homesteaded 40 acre parcels until 1987. One could stake and record). Trouble is usually there isn't a road to location. You need a 100 gran super cub to get there. Big investment for a hunting cabin.
We live 200 miles up a dirt road and that's as far out as I want to be actually. Road washed out a week back, I mean miles of the road washed out. So the creek is where the road once was and it's not supposed to be fixed for 3 weeks. The Gov flew in other day, but everything takes time; state is doing everything they can. Just part of living in rural Alaska.
WE lost our custom's guy here in Eagle in this last flood. They hate fed people out this way like nowheres else, years back they had to state police escort fed park people outta here. Chuck our custom's agent was well liked and it's a real loss to the community. He was a veteran, awful proud of his sons in military, and all around great guy. They found his trk in creek, 6 foot of water, door open. Bad deal all the way around. Always the best people leave this earth way before their time. Condolences to his family.
So anyway, in Alaska; distances are great, drive times are long, roads poor, and we have so much freedom I don't know how to act. It fosters the growth of people like Sarah Palin, which is a good thing for the country.
NO, because the posts above say “no tsunami”
I believe Denali is north and west of Anchorage (more north than west). I was there last week - if they felt it at all, it would have been only a minor shake.
Doh!!!

I’m fine, thanks for asking though! This was out in the Aluetians (long island chain off the south-west end of the state), probably over 500 miles from here. If anything was felt where I’m at, I slept through it :-)
I’m close to the water, but up high enough a tsunami would not be a concern.
