MORGAN HILL (CBS 5) ― Click to enlarge1 of 1 CBS

numSlides of totalImages On Cinco de Mayo, five Morgan Hill high school students came to school in red, white and blue, and got a very public lesson in school politics and free speech.

The boys came to Live Oak High School on the Mexican holiday, wearing t-shirts, shorts and shoes emblazoned with American flags.

Around 10 a.m., the assistant principal told sophomore Matthew Dariano he had to remove his bandana, which is against school policy.

This is crazy. These school officials should be scolded for the racsim it just created. What the heck is school's education for? These kids had every right to wear the flag, just as those who forget who feeds them wears a different flag and pledges alligance to the land of their forgotten. And I thought this is America!

Another public school suspended sixteen students for prancing around the school wearing Mexican flags wrapped around themselves.

When the schools get out of the propagandizing business and get into the learning business they won’t have to deal with this crap.

Cinco de Mayo is NOT an American holiday. There is no reason to be discussing the day in any other context than reading, writing, and arithmetic.

The kids should have roamed the halls handing out mayonnaise packets to every mexican they could find.

no kid has the “right” to wear anything the school code says no one can wear on campus

bandannas are a gang thing. “no” flags means “no” flags because in cases like this, they were trying to make a political statement, some you agree with, some you might not but it disrupts that school in the principle’s judgement.

but reciting the pledge of allegiance every day? Si.

this incident is a good argument for school uniforms

I think the divide is not between Hispanic and non-Hispanic, but between patriots (including many naturalized/native-born Hispanics) and recent immigrant (legal and illegal) Hispanic.

Note that the District’s official position is that the school administrator was wrong.

Enough of this BS. If they want to celebrate May 5, then go back to Mexico to do it. But don't demand that we take on a holiday from some pissant country.

Actually, May 5 is just another day in Mexico. They don’t celebrate anything. Cinco de Mayo is an American alcohol purveyor holiday.

Which state is this?

Interesting that 2 of the targeted boys who are quoted are part Mexican. Good for them. They have more sense than their principal.

I got home from work last night about 6:30 and the high school (3 blocks away) was having some sort of Cinco de Mayo celebration with the loudspeakers running at full tilt in Spanish. This is on the San Fran peninsula about 45 minutes from Morgan Hill. This was a first ever in my nearly 30 years here — to come home to a major Fiesta in my backyard. All I could think of was “Where in America can you flee to escape this nonsense?”

Cinco de Mayo is NOT an American holiday.

***

Exactly. I got an email from an online site from which I occasionally buy clothing. It told me to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by taking advantage of their sale. I sent them an email explaining that I don’t celebrate CdM and commenting that it was silly to send me such an email.

“no kid has the “right” to wear anything the school code says no one can wear on campus”

The kid apparently took off the bandana. It was the t-shirts that got them in trouble and there wasn’t anything in the school code about that. The school district took the side of the kids and now the principal said they can wear the t-shirts.
