One of the more bizarre rows in American politics has resurfaced as the country prepares for crucial mid-term elections this year.
The so-called 'birthers' movement, which questions whether Barack Obama was born in the US and is therefore a legitimate president, has cropped up on the campaign.
A representative in Arizona's state senate has even introduced a 'birth certificate bill' because she says constituents are so worried.
The White House has consistently dismissed the issue. Authorities in Hawaii have provided an electronic record of Obama's birth because the paper copy was destroyed in a fire which wiped out much of the state's archives.
But J D Hayworth, who is running against former presidential candidate John McCain in the race to be Arizona Senator, questioned Obama's credentials on a radio show.
McCain, who lost out to Obama in 2008, criticised Hayworth for giving oxygen to the 'birther' debate.
And supporters at one of Hayworth's rallies openly questioned the president's right to be in office.

I think that we all would prefer he was retired early to Leavenworth.
I would prefer GITMO.
LOL....according to SkyNews, “fire” destroyed his BC? Oh dear, didn’t Obama write in ‘Dreams of my Father’ that he used his dearly beloved, coveted and “tattered” birth certifcate as a bookmark???????
Did his dog eat it after he wrote his florid memoirs?
Yup. I don't care about the fire that destroyed the paper original, because Obama said in "Dreams" that he had an original.
Personally, given the difficulties of air travel in the mid-sixties, I don't think he was born in Kenya. I think it's more likely he was born in Vancouver.
This is the first I have heard of a fire destroying a copy of his Certificate of Live Birth.
I am not sure why this is even mentioned, since it says the fire destroyed a copy. No big deal, make another copy from the original.
I don’t think he was born in Kenya. I think it’s more likely he was born in Vancouver.
I think he was spawned in Hell and sent here to lead
the demoncrat party.
I've followed this pretty closely, and this is the first time I've heard of this wrinkle to the story.
I would love to see the state run media attempt to omit the fact that Obama was not on the ballot in various states due to ineligibility.
They could probably pull it off.
Did this “fire” destroy all the hospital records, too?
Barry doesn’t have a birth certificate?
Then how’d he get a passport?
Oh, all of those are missing, too? And one of the guys who went through the files during 2008 was shot right before he was called to testify?
At this point, I’d settle for a driver’s license......
This is the first that I heard that a fire destroyed the original paperwork. Has that been stated before?
‘Authorities in Hawaii have provided an electronic record of Obama’s birth because the paper copy was destroyed in a fire which wiped out much of the state’s archives.’
Which were found floating in a bottle off the coast of Wakiki today.
You're right. This is not going away. JD should have used his appearance on O'Reilly to bring up the NBC issue, however. Nevertheless, Kerchner/Appuzzo seem to be gaining traction. When FoxNews carries this in a respectful way it will bw the beginning of the end of the usurper.
Not that I’m aware of
Hey now he can say the Tsunami destroyed it.. ASSHAT Ofama...
Then howd he get a passport?
