The CEO for Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFMI) is relinquishing his chairman title. John Mackey is not only the CEO but also the co-founder of this company. He also held the title of chairman since 1978.
After much petitioning by some of the shareholders, Mackey decided to voluntarily give up the title of "chairman" in an effort to keep peace and to appease the activist group. Taking his place will be John Elstrott, the current lead director. When Elstrott takes over as chairman, his previous position will be discontinued. Mackey will continue to be the company's CEO.
One reason for the group's disapproval of Mackey holding both positions is due to his editorial opposing Obama's proposed health care reform. Shareholders expressed belief that this decision inevitably damaged the company's reputation. The activist group believes Mackey misused the company in an effort to advance his personal political views.
If you mean self-employed middle class folks like me who are not wealthy but enjoy good food, like to cook and are willing to pay a little more for quality, yes, it will hurt us.
The ultra rich like Obama and Gore and virtually everybody in Congress don’t shop or cook for themselves anyway.
Yes. What nerve having an opinion and expressing it.
Guess that was another little know bill past in the wee dark hours of the night.
Hear ye! Hear ye! You can not have an opinion contrary to the one we give you.
To hell in a hand-basket I’d say. Liberals and unions and activists leading the way. Following the Community Organizer of course.
That is true. It takes your company away from you.
You can call or email, but I doubt it will work. I have shopped at Whole Foods for 27 years and owned stick since they went public and I trust their decisions.
Mackey decided to voluntarily give up the title of “chairman” in an effort to keep peace and to appease the activist group”
What a shame. Trying to APPEASE an activist group. That means he just gave into them...
Somehow this doesn't surprise me.
Another example of the Left’s love of free speech.

4 am reminder call to A’hole foods ... ;-)
I used to work half a block from a whole foods, and everytime I'd go in I got the feeling I had been channeled to Berkeley. You could literally taste the leftitude of the 'elite' clientele.
I began shopping at Whole Foods when Whole Foods only had one store on the planet and mist if the staff knew me by name.
In the the time since, it would appear that Whole Foods has made good decisions.
Too bad he was one of the good guys. I was just in Whole Foods the other day and i was impressed by their operation.
This is the world of 0bama, where dissent is soon to be outlawed.
God help us. All the guy did was to propose a possible health care plan that would work! But since it differed from that of 0, the repulsive libs ran him out of town. Unbelievable!
If you think that bowing to union pressure is a “good decision”, may I suggest that you’re on the wrong internet forum? The CEO built Whole Foods from the beginning. He was involved in every “good decision” that made them a nationwide chain.
You should always buy cooking oil in a natural food store. Spectrum is a good brand. Supermarket cooking oil is solvent extracted except for olive oil. They use oil based solvents to get the last bit of oil out of corn, soy, rape seed, safflower etc. Spectrum uses zero solvents to extract its cooking oils.
Whole Foods is a rip off. We have an independent here with one large store and he undercuts them on everything. Plus he has a much better vitamin & supplement section. Unfortunately he is a bit further than Whole Foods... ... But I patronize him before Whole Foods
How does a guy with one store sell cheaper than WF?
Because WF sucks!
Well, we may have the first Palin Cabinet nominee.
This is just plain diddlypoop.
In our local Whole Foods, the whole healthcare flap did NOTHING to diminish business! The parking lot and the store were just as full of customers as usual. (The cars in the parking lot even still included those with obama bumper stickers—may God illumine these deluded people!) The only difference is that the employees were extra nice to us for awhile, and there were more samples.
So, at least at the local level, Mackey’s statement against Deathcare did not materially damage the company’s reputation. And I live in a deep blue state. So the radical-liberals are lying and scheming again, as usual.
My experience of shopping at Whole Foods (which I do weekly) is different from what you might expect. There are many Orthodox Christians, some of whom I know, and others whom I have met there. We’re shopping for fasting foods, among other things. I imagine that there are Jews looking for kosher food, too.
Whole Foods is all about health—physical—and for Orthodox Christians—spiritual as well. The vile, anti-human commuNazi Deathcare is about physical and spiritual death! So it’s right for the CEO of Whole Foods to oppose obama, his anti-human czars (commisars, really), and their satanic “health” care measures.
Next they will remove him from his CEO position. You oppose the left at your peril. They play for keeps and don’t tolerate opposition.
How about coconut oil?
