Fox News can confirm that Fort Hood suspect Army Major Nidal Hasan is awake and speaking to medical staff at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
Hospital spokesperson Maria Gallegos says he's in critical but stable condition.
A U.S. Army spokesman says Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the suspected Fort Hood gunman, is in critical but stable condition three days after he allegedly opened fire on the military base that killed 13 and left 29 wounded.
Hasan, 39, was shot during an exchange of gunfire during Thursday's attack. The military moved him on Friday to Brooke Medical Center, where he was taken off a ventilator on Saturday.

With few exceptions, research over the past 40 years has found that dentists (and doctors) take their own lives at a higher-than-average rate. But how much higher? I won't venture an opinion for the world of work overall, but among health-care types it may well be shrinks. This may work for our advantage in one way. It will give us an opportunity to cut through the lies and expose the murderer for what he is - a jihadist. This was not random violence; it was another attack in Islam’s ongoing war. Putting the jihadist on trial will help us prove that.
I hope they guard him with some of the army’s finest canine troops. And feed those brave dogs with Bacon.
Totally agree with you. He actually may be dead already... maybe there is a reason for these reports...possibly to stop a followup attack??? Can anyone confirm his being alive?
