Hey y'all,
I am in the process of negotiating with the Gaylord Palms hotel to hold our Freeper Convention there on April 25. We can get a rate of $99 per night (which is a great rate for this really nice hotel) and the convention room will be complimentary.
For that rate they are asking for us to block a minimum of 40 rooms; if some people are staying both Friday and Saturday nights that would count as 2 rooms. The contract will be written such that if all 40 rooms are not picked up we would have to pay the difference. So, for example, if only 10 rooms were actually reserved the person signing the contract (me) would owe them $2970. I told them those terms were not acceptable, but they seem to be willing to work out some other terms if I can get them a firm number on how many guest rooms will be reserved.
Please mail me by Friday, 3/27/09, and let me know if you will be staying at the hotel and for how many nights. Without getting committments from you I feel uncomfortable agreeing to even 10 rooms, though I hope we have a better showing than that!
The convention will be on April 25, a Saturday, from 8am to 6pm. Room reservations for Friday and Saturday will count towards our minimum number required.
The Gaylord Palms is the sort of place one takes visiting friends and relatives just for the experience. I haven’t been for a couple of years, but the last time I went we walked endlessly through a Cajun dockside village - IN THE LOBBY! The alligators weren’t real, thank goodness... but lots of different places to eat and a museum of Mel Fisher’s Atocha finds... etc.
We also need to see how we can work with this group and their march on DC in September.
We should be the rallying point for all of Florida. Maybe we can organize buses, etc...
But I'll tell you, I learn from everything....and life is full of things to see and do....and I intend to take full advantage of it.
Friends, let Roos know if you intend to stay a night or two at the Palms so she can deal with the hotel. All of you know how this goes if you've ever been chairpeeples of events. Post to her as soon as you can so that her planning goes smoothly.
Bob looking for you and your good lookin' son to be walking into the lobby this big weekend for freepers! I'll be there both Friday and Saturday night so I don't get too-much-driving-in-one day syndrome.

At our last convention we decided to support Bill McCollum for US Senate; MinuteGal spearheaded the effort and repeatedly contacted the McCollum campaign staff to offer our state-wide organisation to aid the campaign. They always said 'thank you' but there was never a follow-up. I went to the headquarters here in Orlando and made a plea for a coordinated effort. Once again they thanked us and promised to contact us... they NEVER did.
McCollum lost the race - quite handily as I remember. We FReepers could not have been surprised.
Our efforts are not wasted, although they did not succeed in this instance. The failure was solely by the McCollum campaign; the next time we make an offer, this can be our cudgel: ignore us at your peril. McCollum is talking about running for Senate again; we need to take him to the woodshed or tell him to sit down and shut up!
Because one does not make immediate gains does not mean the effort is a failure; the American way is to build on past failures.
I agree that we have a steep mountain to climb; I agree that as public frustration grows there is a danger of more aggressive intervention against the burgeoning federal govt.
Let us stand in the gap!
“Ok, Ill post it again for everyone. Ive asked for it before and hopefully yall have sent it to SeekTheTruth, please send her your Top 5 items that you think need to be discussed at the convention. She is compiling them and now that the Tea Party I is over should have time to get them all together. So as not to overwhelm her I asked that everyone keep their items to 5 words or less, just so we get the general idea.”
Hi all! Just freepmail your top five discussion ideas to me and I will add them to the list. I am ready!! :)
Dear God.
I’ll try to get there, but this is not good news for any conservative.
I will not vote for him ever again.
I would rather lay down in a field until moss grows on my back.
But this is very, very bad.
Would love to be there, but can’t make that April 25th date.
“We should identify key people in positions of reach that we can lobby to push key points of our agenda. Especially in regard to FL...we need to really really push for local reps that will stand up against this tyranny.”
I agree! And that idea would also come under actions for elections in 2010 and beyond. I contact my local Rep and many throughout Florida who think I live in their district. It is a little trick I will share at the convention.:) We need to publish their records and support only those who are constitutional conservatives!
Thanks for the great idea for our Freeper sign in sheet I am preparing. Will be sure to include “US Rep.District”. I can share info concerning my US Rep and sure others can do the same. Freepers in Palm Beach have a great person to support in Alan West! I supported him but couldn't vote for him last time, but he is running again in 2010. :)
I feel the same way about Governor Crist, but see this news of his run for Martinez seat as a way to send him home.:) Since he is obviously a RINO, it will be easy to point that out to everyone! We just have to find a real conservative to step forward to run against him. Crist running for the Senate will open up the Governor's seat and we have a better chance to get a real conservative Governor! :)
AARRGGHHH
My son has a fight that weekend in fort Pierce.
Gators are real.
We will be there, but won’t be staying.
We are also going to need a strategy to go after SEIU in Florida. This is by far the most dangerous organization in our country and every state needs to work through legislation and process to diminish the impact these guys are having.
They are literally responsible for getting Obama elected and will be responsible for card check.
Yes, we probably need to talk about whether we target specific unions, groups & organizations or just make sure we are informed and in turn make other people informed about what they’re trying to do.
I have been there in the past for the FPEA homeschool convention - what a fabulous place, and what an unbelievable rate. I can’t afford it, but I can’t tell you how much I’d like to...
I’ll have to read through all the earlier posts to see if it is $99/room or /person - maybe I can find someone to share with me (yeah, I’m almost local, but who wants to freep and then drive for 2 hours?)
Please jump to the bottom of this post for a moment and read my tag line. I add this tag line to my FR comments periodically. The kicker is.....I shouldn't have to post it at all.
All year, every year, I'm gobsmacked by the number of Florida freepers who don't know we even have a state forum. When and if they find out, they don't know how to find it. Once they find it, they don't know what the features of it are....and are not.
They don't know we have three chapters because they don't know we have a forum at all.
There is no "help" link for chapter forums on FR as far as I'm aware.
I would like to discuss briefly what we can do to help freepers of ANY state discover their state boards, learn what they're for and how they are correctly used vis a vis the main FR forum. Also, how we can get some kind of chapter "help" feature from the FR powers-that-be.
There are a couple of side issues to this subject and I'd be happy to discuss them briefly at a meeting. I'd like to hear any comments or suggestions about the forum's physical format.....and then we could explore how we can strengthen both our chapter set-up as well as FR chapters across the fruited plain since we're entering a period of great peril to our nation.
I actually have no gripes about our own Florida forum....it's self-policed and utilized just about perfectly. I'm just interested in an extrememly short session about making it more well-known, more easily accessed, and getting some technical help or changes from on high.
Please gather your thoughts on this issue and hold them for the convention. This particular thread is for promoting convention reservations, throwing out potential agenda topics.....and saving any heavy debate for the event itself.
Thanks.....Leni/MinuteGal
If others of you are looking for someone to share the room cost, post it here. Inform us of your gender and your smoking preference.
You know if you room with another freeper you will enjoy 100 points of compatibility, LOL.
Leni
umm...gender? Well, I’m female (really - that’s why, “woman”vet, hehe). And, I do not smoke tobacco.
I’m thinking, Saturday night since I don’t want to get off work on Friday and then drive over to Kissimmee.
Am I right that these will be rooms with two double beds?
