Huge study boosts disappointment on multivitamins
San Luis Obispo Tribune ^ | Feb. 09, 2009 | LINDSEY TANNER

AP Medical Writer

The largest study ever of multivitamin use in older women found the pills did nothing to prevent common cancers or heart disease. The eight-year study in 161,808 postmenopausal women echoes recent disappointing vitamin studies in men.

Millions of Americans spend billions of dollars on vitamins to boost their health. Research has focused on cancer and heart disease in particular because of evidence that diets full of vitamin-rich foods may protect against those illnesses. But that evidence doesn't necessarily mean pills are a good substitute...

Exactly. However, this doesn’t begin to address the value of Vit C, Vit D, CoEnzymeQ10 and others.

This sounds like the beginning of the latest media drumbeat to prepare us for the government making supplements illegal or prescription only - “pharmaceutical quality” supplements.

This has been a movement of the politically influential pharmaceutical companies for some time. They would like to eliminate the competition from natural supplements. Now with Marxists at the helm, who want unprecedented control over our lives and access to healthcare, their chances of succeeding are better than before.

Not me, although I have had cancer...but I do take specifically-targeted nutrients that have demonstrated results in many studies. That said, I’m convinced that everything else you can change pales in comparison to diet.

Exactly to you too! You know your supplements. Looks like Zero’s machine is readying to spring against the supplement folks. *sigh*

Exactly. And the Zero-worshippers I’ve sparred with on alternative health sites were ecstatic prior to the election. They felt like Zero was going to be sensitive and sympathetic and would want to do the right thing and would be supportive of gentle, non-toxic treatments and preventative measures. The idiots just couldn’t grasp the idea of a handful of pharma giants padding Zero’s coffers in return for exclusive government contracts to distribute government-approved medicines...along with an aggressive federal attack on all forms of non-prescription competition.

Better not. I’ll get them someway, even if I have to get them out of the country.

Sounds like the study was done on people who already had cancer and heart disease. Vitamins may still be helpful in preventing disenses.

So clinical studies show if you don’t take vitamins, you will get various debilitating diseases.
But clinical studies show if you do take vitamins, nothing good happens.

Sounds to me that what’s worthless here isn’t the vitamins.
It’s the clinical studies.

Sorry. You're going to have to peddle them somewhere else. I'm not big on multivitamins, either. I take one but I don't expect it to cure anything. It may be valuable to prevention but in order to cure something you need to use specific vitamins in larger doses.

I am an absolute believer in Vitamin C in large doses, as well as Vitamin D.

I also believe that CoEnzyme Q 10 will prevent heart disease.

These are far superior to taking drugs. At our house, we take no drugs and we are senior citizens and doing far better than others our age.

I can write a book on the dangers of drugs.

Thanks for the link to the study. I'm not a huge vitamin proponent, but the Annals of Internal Medicine should be ashamed to publish it. What a design! Retrospective questioning of patients on what and how they take vitamins, for conditions that nobody claims are affected (see calcium in the list!).

Two words: Codex Alimentarius.

You have to take more than multivitamins.

Multivitamins can keep you from getting a cold.

But other supplements are needed for special needs, such as heart conditions, osteoporosis, low red blood cell count, etc.
