IMo two things are going on:

1. BO is trying to keep bay on the reservation...Local article in December about Bayh trying to organize conservative democrats in the Senate.

2. Two potential strong candidates to run against Bayh...Mitch Daniels and Mike Pence. They put pressure on Bayh to be more conservative.

Bayh has always marketed himself as a conservative democrat. He may indeed need some former democrats to discuss the direction of the party with him.
