Wegmans slashes food prices (recession causes price cuts, free market works)

Canandaigua, NY--Local shoppers have been watching their grocery bills increase for months, but some relief is on the way.

In anticipation of lower fuel and production costs, Wegmans has cut prices on hundreds of items, with reductions ranging from 10 to 30 percent.

Signs will go up today and over the weekend pointing customers to the lower-cost items, said spokeswoman Jo Natale.

In a message posted on the company Web site, owners Danny and Colleen Wegman said the price cuts were made in anticipation of Wegmans’ costs falling in the future. They said they don’t mind making a little less money during difficult times.

While gas prices are down, along with the cost of corn, wheat and soybeans, food prices have remained high. Wegmans and other companies locked into contracts when costs were up out of concern that they’d go even higher, the company said.

The Wegmans price cuts are expected to save consumers $12 million a year, or $40 to $60 a month for an average family, Natale said.

ours opened a year ago. It’s about a mile from my home. For the first month or so, it was crazy and not worth going to at all! It seems to have settled down, but the key is to go during the week and avoid weekends, except in the early mornings.

Don’t tell GM, they don’t know the way to increase sells
is to cut price.

Oh, the dealers are making price cuts.
But it's hard-to-near-impossible to get people to return
to GM (and Ford and Chrysler) after they got burned by the last
one they'll ever own.
And they've spent the time since that last GM/Ford/Mopar
driving around in a reliable, affordable Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, etc.

At least in my local area of Mid-Missouri (Columbia, MO), the
dealers seem to bucking that trend.
I think they're offering discounts in the thousands of dollars,
even something like up to $4,000 off on full-sized trucks.
I think I saw the local Cadillac dealer saying that after all
incentives, a Cadillac stickered around $50,000 would get nearly
$5,000 off (roughly 10% off).

It's like a drug, I tell you. I can't stay off FR for too long at a time, so I will be popping in and out. But, Diana in Wisconsin still has a job as the co-ping mistress. :D

Saw this and had to pass it on.

Birdseed. I need cheaper birdseed.

We shop at Wegmans and buy 20 lb bags of black oiler sunflower seeds for the bird feeder, along with suet cakes. Last year's price was $12 or $13 a bag and this year is $17 a bag.

You’re probably shopping in the wrong part of the store. The dry goods and commodities are low priced, the food court is high.

What impressed me last visit was their rotisserie chicken selection, many varieties at quite low prices. They even had kosher available and the price wasn’t that bad. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a kosher chicken.

Still, the food court does well. I don’t get to the store in Hunt Valley, MD often, but the lot is always crowded.

The HS kids from Doylestown, PA hang out in the Warrington Wegman’s food court. Doylestown rolls their sidewalks up at 9PM.

They have already screwed it up.

Price cuts when no one has money to spend lead a downward spiral of job loss leading to a complete lack of goods. Profits are good, leading to job creation. Competition leads to price cuts when there is choice of goods. When you create money out of nothing, pretty soon, you have nothing.

I started buying sunflower kernels. I found that, especially over the winter, the kernels attracted birds, like goldfinches, that can't deal with the hulls. The kernels are now really expensive if not bought by the 40 pound bag.

Our local ALDI store caused this...Wegmans is so over priced, it’s pathetic. I only shop their sales...Summer produce I get at the farmers’ market....The rest from Aldi’s as long as it’s USA.

area residents will actually take visitors there for sightseeing

He's not making that up. When my sister and brother-in-law are up visiting from Tennessee, a trip to Wegman's is understood to be on the schedule. The nearest one to Mom's house is 45 minutes away in Jamestown.

No matter -- off we go.

We have a few goldfinches visiting the feeder, so I’ll see what the kernals cost. The small chickadees seem to have no problem with the black oilers.

Chickadees and titmice peck them open. As far as I can tell, finches can only gnaw. I also saw a bit more of the woodpeckers after switching to kernels.

The kernels are more expensive but might last longer. You'll see how that works in your case.

We have a good assortment of woodpeckers hanging around the suet cakes. Had to tie the suet cakes into the baskets, however, to keep the raccoons and squirrels from knocking them to the ground.

I love Wegmans grocery stores. The closest one to me is in Syracuse, about an hour away. I grew up in Rochester, NY where Wegmans was a staple. Besides New York State, they’ve got stores in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and I’ve never understood why they’ve never opened any stores farther east in the state than Syracuse.

I’m planning that.

Right around the holidays is the best sales and best coupons, and it will be just weeks before 0 takes office.
