We shop at Wegmans and buy 20 lb bags of black oiler sunflower seeds for the bird feeder, along with suet cakes. Last year's price was $12 or $13 a bag and this year is $17 a bag.

I started buying sunflower kernels. I found that, especially over the winter, the kernels attracted birds, like goldfinches, that can't deal with the hulls. The kernels are now really expensive if not bought by the 40 pound bag.

We have a few goldfinches visiting the feeder, so I’ll see what the kernals cost. The small chickadees seem to have no problem with the black oilers.
