Let’s boil this ‘new and improved’ bailout bill that just passed the Senate down to its bare bones. Then, if you’re moved to do so, it might just be time to pick up the phone and call your congressman, urging him to really ‘stand up for the American taxpayer’ (not to mention do what is right). Admittedly, the do what is right aspect of this whole thing would represent a complete aberration where any decision-making in Washington is concerned, but you may just sleep better tonight, having at least engaged in a personal effort to revive that archaic concept.
The bill that was voted down on the floor of the House on Monday is essentially the same bill that was passed on the floor of the Senate last night, with one glaring exception: the addition of a myriad of ‘you-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-yours’ pig-product codicils.
Translation:
Monday’s bill: A $700 billion bailout for the congressional/special interest/Wall Street criminals who brought about this economic meltdown to begin with, with the $700 billion needed to ‘keep the economy chugging’ to be paid by the American taxpayer. Today’s bill: A $700 billion bailout for the congressional/special interest/Wall Street criminals who brought about this economic meltdown to begin with, with the $700 billion needed to ‘keeping the economy chugging’ to be paid by the American taxpayer … with the added stipulation that a huge number of businesses/organizations, with direct ties to congressmen whose votes are needed in order to pass the bill, will be granted enormous tax breaks.
Result: The fair share of taxes that would normally be paid by ‘friends of Congress’ will now also be shifted onto the shoulders of the American taxpayer ...
... as if the American taxpayers’ portion of that gargantuan burden weren’t heavy enough already.
The self-serving corruption in Washington is so thick as to be impenetrable anymore.
The concept of ‘public service’? Capitalism and the free market system in America?
Turn out the lights on your way out. It’s over.

Just spoke with a staff member from Pence’s office who assured me that he is still against the legislation passed by the Senate and I passed along my encouragement to keep it that way.
Bad as this bill is, the alternative is worse.
One of my favorite Senators, Tom Coburn voted for this bill. I am not going to second guess his wisdom.
It is needed, much as I hate it.
I couldnt get thru to my Congressman, Tim Murphy’s PA-18) office to tell him to stay strong and vote no again. I hope its more people like me (offering support and encouragement) but I fear the opposite.
What time does the vote start? And is it true no statements, just a straight vote?

Indeed. How about mailing a used bag of tea to all those who voted in favor of this bailout? It would definitely send a message if enough people were to do it.

And I really mean it, this week.
We agree that something must be done.
And it is incontrovertibly true that the Paulson plan is "something".
But those two premises do not necessarily lead to the conclusion that "the Paulson plan must be done".
This is "taxation without representation" writ large. This unConstitutional tax bill and transfer of power are the final death knell for the Republic IMO.

It's the October Surprise. They had to kick it off in September though so it would have maximum impact in October. They know this was coming ages ago. Their timing is impeccable.
My congressman voted for it in the House vote.
I hope I don’t have to call him and tell him to vote that way again.:)
Just an FYI...try calling a local Congressional office...as opposed to the DC ones. I just got thru locally. The woman was incredibly polite...but I could hear the weariness in her voice...I wonder how many calls they have taken this a.m.?

I'm afraid I can't agree, JRochelle.
Even if not passing legislation results in Depression-like economic conditions, we will have at least avoided the implementation of major portions of the socialist agenda (which are never reversible), and we will have avoided rewarding the massive, widespread criminal behavior that got us here in the first place.
Sometimes a flood of Biblical proportions is needed in order to get a people back on track. That the innocent have to suffer along with the guilty is unfortunate, but at least the end result is triumph over evil.

Ok, tell me....if this is soooo needed, such an emergency, the worst crisis since the Great Depression.....why did the Senate have to add millions in pork on top of it to buy votes? If things are that dire, you'd think every congresscritter would vote for it without hesitation to save the country.
So now not only are we taxpayers burdened even more with this bailout, but now with all the pork stacked on top. I don't know about you, but I don't have a money tree growing in my yard.

I believe the majority of the citizenry was up in arms regarding a possible 'Wall Street bailout' ... until Monday, when they saw the results of the House vote reflected in the Dow. Now, because their savings and/or retirement funds took a major hit, they are slowly changing their minds.
'Never mind what any future proposed bailout entails. Just see to it that my retirement savings don't ever again go through what they did on Monday!'
If that isn't the battle cry of a conglomeration of ill-informed fools, unwilling to look past their noses, I don't know what is.
Don't know when the vote is scheduled for -- been doing to much calling and posting here to pay attention to that. :) Perhaps another FReeper can answer that question?

I like your idea -- and used is the operative word. We don't want to waste anything usable, since such commodities might be in short supply in the not-to-distant future, what with the inevitable magnifying of this economic crisis by our self-serving 'leadership'.
