Corruption 101

Let’s boil this ‘new and improved’ bailout bill that just passed the Senate down to its bare bones. Then, if you’re moved to do so, it might just be time to pick up the phone and call your congressman, urging him to really ‘stand up for the American taxpayer’ (not to mention do what is right). Admittedly, the do what is right aspect of this whole thing would represent a complete aberration where any decision-making in Washington is concerned, but you may just sleep better tonight, having at least engaged in a personal effort to revive that archaic concept.

The bill that was voted down on the floor of the House on Monday is essentially the same bill that was passed on the floor of the Senate last night, with one glaring exception: the addition of a myriad of ‘you-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-yours’ pig-product codicils.

Translation:

Monday’s bill: A $700 billion bailout for the congressional/special interest/Wall Street criminals who brought about this economic meltdown to begin with, with the $700 billion needed to ‘keep the economy chugging’ to be paid by the American taxpayer. Today’s bill: A $700 billion bailout for the congressional/special interest/Wall Street criminals who brought about this economic meltdown to begin with, with the $700 billion needed to ‘keeping the economy chugging’ to be paid by the American taxpayer … with the added stipulation that a huge number of businesses/organizations, with direct ties to congressmen whose votes are needed in order to pass the bill, will be granted enormous tax breaks.

Result: The fair share of taxes that would normally be paid by ‘friends of Congress’ will now also be shifted onto the shoulders of the American taxpayer ...

... as if the American taxpayers’ portion of that gargantuan burden weren’t heavy enough already.

The self-serving corruption in Washington is so thick as to be impenetrable anymore.

The concept of ‘public service’? Capitalism and the free market system in America?

Turn out the lights on your way out. It’s over.

I just e-mailed my congressman, Mike Pence, and asked him to stay resolute. It took forever, I’m guessing he’s getting a lot of traffic.

I would have the American people consider this. Our financial system is hurting right now. But if the largest money people won’t bail out this problem, if they can’t fix it, or won’t fix it, why should the American people do it? The American people are being treated like fools.

The American people are being treated like fools.

Absolutely. We're being played like a fiddle, and the powers that be have become so arrogant that they're doing it in plain sight, as if to say, 'Just what are you going to do about it?'

Ain’t it jes’ remarkable how the crisis bubbled up just a few days late to save Lehman, but jes’ in time to rescue Goldman Sachs’ investments in AIG and to encourage Warren Buffett to buy into GS????

I'm thinking they planned this “sky is falling” fiasco all along just so they could walk out with millions in their pockets to merely turn around and buy back into these distressed markets to multiply their winnings.

Sorry in advance for posting THIS... info on the CRA of 1977, for the umpteenth time, but it's important that people read it before calling their representatives.

We need to put a real and lasting fear into our representatives. They need to understand that IF they support this atrocity, there will be repercussions. We will make it our sole goal in life to see them change careers.

It seems to me that our elected officials think only they know what is best for the little people, And you can bet they are doing their best to cover their butts and investments. I predict that in the near future the little people are going to reach a breaking point and civil unrest will take back what these jerks are giving away. God help us all if Obama-ramma gets in because change will come, not a change that will do us any good. America better wake up quick and open their eyes to reality.

I, too, wonder just how much of this crisis was created for our 'leadership's' gain.

Not simply financial, either. Once any bailout bill is passed, it will be the first of many. And the end result of each one will be more power for the government, and its many bureaucratic agencies, to oversee the banking/mortgage industry, and the free market system in general.

The advances in implementing socialist doctrine will be taking a giant leap forward once the dust has settled.

Talk about rewarding criminals for their crimes!

You have an uncanny ability to connect dots. Would that more of your countrymen were able to do the same.

I tried to email my rep, Frank Wolf. Here’s what’s on his page:

“Due to technical problems today with the House of Representatives e-mail server, you may experience difficulty in contacting me by e-mail. House technicians are working to correct this situation, so please check back later. Thank you for your patience.”

Keep trying!

I pray that you are right, but I have my doubts that a large enough segment of the citizenry to make a difference will ever take action. Apathy is incredibly deep and entrenched in this country. If this abomination passing itself off as a 'rescue mission for the American taxpayer' doesn't arouse the people to action, I don't know that anything will.

Best to you and yours in these troubling times ...

I think calling is much more effective, with the main reason being the one you just illustrated. From what I hear, it's much easier to get through by phone.

joanie-f

for FReeper of the Year...

another fine post.

the Senate added about 110 billion $$ to the “bailout” bill. including money for manufacturers of childrens wooden arrows....projects in Alaska....and incentives to companies that do business in American Samoa (the pajamas media are searching for proof of the rumor that Nancy Pelosi’s husband has a company operating there)....

so the Senate has piled on Pork to this unpopular bill....not to get the public to support it, but to get the members of Congress to support it and ignore the stated will of the people.

we want a solution to the “financial crisis” that involves fiscal responsibility, not a solution that involves dumping it onto our backs.

they threaten us with depression if we do not agree with their solution but they do not understand that their solution will cause severe depression for each and every one of us anyway.

we know we are in trouble, but we want the people who are responsible for this mess to take their share of the costs, not be rewarded with bonuses and congratulations.
