McCain Adviser, Phil Gramm, Leaves Campaign NEW YORK (CBS) ― Phil Gramm, a top adviser to presidential candidate John McCain, is resigning from the role as campaign co-chairman after his comments that the United States had become a "nation of whiners" who constantly complain about the state of the economy.
The former U.S. senator from Texas and past presidential candidate made the remarks earlier this month. McCain immediately distanced himself from the comments, but they have been criticized constantly as McCain tries to show he can help steer the country past its current financial troubles.
Gramm had also suggested that the country was facing a "mental recession" instead of real economic problems. Gramm said in a statement late Friday that he is stepping down as a co-chair of the campaign to "end this distraction."

What? We agree on something? No "cuespookymusic"? LOL.
Are ya’ seein’ someone right now? How ‘bout a drink? [I should probably quit while I’m ahead]
Whew! ;-)
I’m just sayin’ all these career politicians have been sitting by, or part of the problem, all these years. Now all of a sudden they want to be ‘fixers’?
The condos at Gulf Shores & Orange Beach were overflowing with visitors when we were there for a couple of weeks. You couldn't find a restaurant where you didn't wait for at least 30 min. to an hour.
You and I are among the few who can honestly say "I told you so" when McCain falls on his sword in a face-to-face with Obama. Not that Obama has the right answers, but he does at least have some idea where the problems lie.
If it was McCain vs. Obama with no other options in November, I'd seriously consider staying home. Fortunately, there are two other options for those of us who seek a less-dominating federal government. (Both of those third-party candidates, I would wager, could answer Dr. Paul's January debate question without resorting to beating around the proverbial bush.)
Let’s hope you never become disabled and, by your definition, “lazy”
By your reasoning, an honest man should never push into office and try to reform unless he’s sure of having enough support.
I think you’d find the lefties would swarm all over that opening.
Holding Sen Gramm responsible for the things he voted against is ridiculous.
I fear there are few conservatives left. But I will be one of them voting in November...voting for a conservative.
Yeah except that its not.
Discrediting those that got swindled by the nice folks at Enron?
Nice..
But don't fret, most Americans are wising up to all this corporate corruption and greed.
No loss. Pathetic it didn’t happen the same day.
Carly's not alone. Juan also hired Meg Whitman, who managed to destroy the eBay community with high fees and such.
Gramm never set off any bombs, never cursed America, and he has ALWAYS been proud of his country.
Who is whining?
I’m not holding him responsible for any one certain thing he voted for or against. I’m just saying I think he’s basically inept and incompetent, in a general way. Nevermind already.
Straight from the RNC playbook:
Someone on the campaign team makes a truthful, if moderately undiplomatic, comment.
The candidate immediately pretends they really don’t know or like them all that much.
The team member is privately asked to get the Hell out.
Publicly, the candidate leaves them twisting in the hot wind of criticism from the whiners they’ve offended.
This scenario was pure SOP from the Republicans:
In the face of controversy, wither away to nothing like a slug in a salt mine. Be sure to emanate a whimpering, “I’m sorry”, as your voice dies to nothing.
Bunch of flaccid pukes.
Couldn’t organize a pissing contest in a freakin’ brewery.
Why, they are packing them right in... things must be GREAT in the Republic!
How much are tickets now?
Why, it's amazing how little a denarius gets these days, isn't it? Hardly enough for the panem once you buy your ticket?
And heck, people must be getting more prosperous...the place is cleaning up...haven't seen a plebe at the games in a while!
But debasing the currency isn't any problem...ain't that right, Strūthius Maximus?
</sarc>
I know panem referred to free grain, etc., but the satirical reference is valid in context. And note that The Games are financed by the state even in modern times...don't you wish you were in a business where the government floated bonds to build an office building or factory for your company?
