McCain Adviser, Phil Gramm, Leaves Campaign NEW YORK (CBS) ― Phil Gramm, a top adviser to presidential candidate John McCain, is resigning from the role as campaign co-chairman after his comments that the United States had become a "nation of whiners" who constantly complain about the state of the economy.

The former U.S. senator from Texas and past presidential candidate made the remarks earlier this month. McCain immediately distanced himself from the comments, but they have been criticized constantly as McCain tries to show he can help steer the country past its current financial troubles.

Gramm had also suggested that the country was facing a "mental recession" instead of real economic problems. Gramm said in a statement late Friday that he is stepping down as a co-chair of the campaign to "end this distraction."

Our economy is in trouble. Face it.

The only people who have to worry are the people who want the gov't to do everything for them. Everybody who is willing to work and do something for themselves is going to be OK. It is only the lazy who need to worry.

The condos at Gulf Shores & Orange Beach were overflowing with visitors when we were there for a couple of weeks. You couldn't find a restaurant where you didn't wait for at least 30 min. to an hour.

You and I are among the few who can honestly say "I told you so" when McCain falls on his sword in a face-to-face with Obama. Not that Obama has the right answers, but he does at least have some idea where the problems lie.

If it was McCain vs. Obama with no other options in November, I'd seriously consider staying home. Fortunately, there are two other options for those of us who seek a less-dominating federal government. (Both of those third-party candidates, I would wager, could answer Dr. Paul's January debate question without resorting to beating around the proverbial bush.)

Someone on the campaign team makes a truthful, if moderately undiplomatic, comment.
The candidate immediately pretends they really don’t know or like them all that much.
The team member is privately asked to get the Hell out.
Publicly, the candidate leaves them twisting in the hot wind of criticism from the whiners they’ve offended.

This scenario was pure SOP from the Republicans:

I know panem referred to free grain, etc., but the satirical reference is valid in context. And note that The Games are financed by the state even in modern times...don't you wish you were in a business where the government floated bonds to build an office building or factory for your company?
