Al-Qaeda Draws New Recruits Via Internet

Al-Qaeda is using the Internet to recruit vulnerable young people to its terrorist network, according to a programme aired on Saudi Arabian TV late on Tuesday.

Umm Osama, the founder of al-Qaeda's first women-only website, al-Khansa, joined several others on the programme to discuss how they renounced jihadist ideology.

Among those who sought a response to this question was an imam from the Medina mosque, Saleh Ibn Awad al-Mudamsi, and the father of a young al-Qaeda suspect held in an Iraqi prison. Read More

ISF detain two suspected terrorists, three suspected Special Groups criminals in separate operations (Balad)

Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces detained two suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq cell members and three suspected Special Groups criminals in operations around central Iraq July 18.

Baghdad National Emergency Response Unit detained two suspected AQI terrorists on Ministry of Interior warrants in the Doura area. The suspects are believed to be involved in murder, killings, kidnapping, extortion, mortar attacks and improvised explosive devices attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces.

Iraqi Security Forces from an-Najaf, al-Hillah and Karbala conducted an operation in the village of Hidariyah to capture criminal elements seeking sanctuary in the area, and detained three suspected Special Groups criminals and seven others.

MND-B Soldiers detain key suspected criminal in Taji Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers detained a highly sought after suspected criminal in Taji, northwest of Baghdad, July 18.
Soldiers from the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, detained the suspected Special Groups criminal, accused of supporting the insurgency in Iraq by supplying intelligence reports with the means to target U.S. installations with rockets.

“We will continue to hunt down these suspected criminals and bring them to justice,” said Maj. Al Hing, spokesperson for 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad. “Our Soldiers will continue to target those criminals who pose a threat to Iraqi security and disrupt their networks.”

INPs, IA, MND-B Soldiers seize munitions in Baghdad Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD – Iraqi National Police, and Iraqi Army and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers continued seizing weapons caches in Baghdad July 19.

Soldiers with the 24th Brigade, 6th Iraq Army Division seized 56 AK-47’s, two SKS rifles and two pistols in the West Rashid district of Baghdad at approximately 8:45 a.m.

Soldiers with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, in a combined patrol with police from the 5th Brigade, 2nd Iraqi National Police Division, found a cache containing 10 AK-47’s in an abandoned house in West Rashid at approximately 9 a.m.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., Soldiers with 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division found a cache northwest of Baghdad consisting of four 57 mm rockets, an RPG launcher and two 155 mm mortar rounds.

Soldiers with the 2nd Brigade, 6th Iraq Army Division found a cache in the Kadamiyah district of Baghdad at approximately 12:00 a.m.. The munitions included three rocket propelled grenade launchers, five rocket boosters, two homemade improvised explosive device tubes and four RPG rounds.

A concerned citizen turned munitions in to 2nd SBCT, 25th Inf. Div. Soldiers north of Baghdad at approximately 3:30 p.m., July 18. The munitions included a 122 mm artillery round, a 105 mm artillery round and three 57 mm projectile rounds.

Ahmadinejad: Meetings on nuclear program a step in right direction

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that any meeting between the West and Iran regarding the latter’s uranium enrichment program is “a step in the right direction,” the Iranian news agency Fars reported Sunday.

The five Lebanese prisoners freed by Israel in the framework of the exchange deal with Hizbullah, including Samir Kuntar, took part in a military ceremony held at the burial site of Imad Mugniyah, a top commander of the Shiite group who was assassinated in Damascus a few months ago.

The five wore Hizbullah military uniforms and kissed Mugniyah’s family members. The father of the slain commander congratulated Kuntar on his release. The terrorist, who was imprisoned in Israel for nearly 30 years after being convicted of killing four Israelis during a cross-border raid on Nahariya, said in response “we owe this victory to you and Imad.

“This morning I heard that the enemy has decided to assassinate me,” Kuntar told the assembled crowd. “This enemy knows me well and I want to answer it with two sentences, like the Imam Hussein, may he rest in peace, said at the time: ‘You threaten me with murder, when death is customary for us and a martyr’s death is an honor from Allah?’

“We swear in the name of the almighty Allah and in the name of your pure blood that we will continue in this path and never give up until we reach the place that was given to you by God,” Kuntar said, referring to what is dubbed by Islamic militants as a “martyr’s death”.

Bus blasts kill 3, injure 14 in southwest China

BEIJING - Three separate bus explosions killed at least three people and injured 14 in the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming on Monday, media said, amid a security clampdown ahead of next month’s Beijing Olympics.

The causes were not immediately clear, but the blasts came within a matter of hours of each other in the capital of Yunnan province and less than three weeks before the Beijing Games, which China has warned could be a target of terrorist attacks.

An explosion on one bus happened at the Panjiawan stop at 7.10 a.m. and the second blast was nearby, the official Xinhua news agency said. Pictures showed a gaping hold in the side of one of the buses and glass scattered in the street.

Another explosion occurred near Minshan, also nearby, the semi-official China News Service said in a report on its Web site (www.chinanews.com.cn).

FIVE STATE CORRECTIONAL GUARDS CHARGED FEDERALLYFOR SMUGGLING DRUGS INTO CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Jonathan I. Solomon, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Walter A. McNeil, Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections, and Alexander E. Rolle, Jr., Chief of Police, Homestead Police Department, announced a series Indictments against five State of Florida Correctional Officers working at Dade Correctional Institution (“DCI”), for conspiring and attempting to traffic illegal narcotics inside the prison, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 846, and for accepting cash payments from inmates in return for helping to deliver narcotics inside the prison, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1951. These Correctional Officers, as well as a prison contract employee and other individuals involved in the narcotics trafficking, were arrested today.

Arrested and charged were Captain Jimmy Lee Love, Jr., Officer Shantavia A.L. Johnson, Officer Dennard G. Fluker, Officer Alexander J. Davis, and Officer Ivis N. Grace, all Correctional Officers at DCI, a maximum security state prison in Florida City, Florida. Felicia Z. Calloway, a contract employee who worked in the DCI kitchen was charged and taken into custody as well. Also named in the Indictments were Arnold S. Lindsay, Jr., Jose Rodriguez, Henry J. Benjamin, Nilo Penton, Joseph Springer, and Leon O. Montes, all DCI inmates, as well as Barbara N. Rodriguez, an associate of one of the inmates.

The four separate Indictments are the result of Operation Birdcage, an FBI undercover investigation into public corruption at DCI. The investigation generated multiple undercover meetings in which an undercover police officer posed as a drug dealer who was available to provide illegal drugs for movement inside DCI. During the investigation, the undercover agent was referred to inmates who were connected to DCI employees and contractors. This led to a series of meetings between the undercover officer and certain correctional officers, the contract employee, and the inmate associate. Meetings between the undercover officer and these individuals were surveilled and recorded. Ultimately, the undercover agent supplied the defendants with sham cocaine and heroin for introduction into DCI, and money payment for their services.

The defendants face a maximum twenty year sentence on each charge and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Corrections, State of Florida, and the Homestead Police Department. These cases are being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Brian Frazier.
