Troops in Afghanistan Kill Militant Fighters, Destroy Weapons
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, July 18, 2008 Coalition and Afghan forces killed several militants and seized weapons in Afghanistan in operations this week, military officials said.
During a combined force patrol in the Nahr Surkh district of Helmand province, militants engaged troops with small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades from a fortified position.
The patrol, which responded with small-arms fire, called for fire support. The retaliatory measures killed an unknown number of militants, military officials said.
Elsewhere in Afghanistan on July 16, Afghan national security forces, assisted by coalition troops, confiscated a large weapons cache in the Sheberghan district of Jawzjan province.
Acting on information supplied by local residents, the combined element removed and destroyed the munitions from a compound in She Shanben village.
The stockpile consisted of more than 1,000 mortar rounds, 60 anti-aircraft rounds, and various small arms with several tons of ammunition, military officials said.

“SAF rejects claims civilians killed in strike that killed two Taliban commanders”
By BILL ROGGIO
July 18, 2008 3:28 PM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) denied yesterday’s operation in western Afghanistan resulted in civilian deaths. The operation led to the killing of two Taliban leaders and the discovery of a makeshift jail.
ISAF said the claims made by a tribal elder and a district leader was “baseless” because Coalition aircraft were not operating near the villages where civilians were purportedly killed.
“ISAF has thoroughly investigated and rejects claims that ISAF forces killed more than 50 civilians in the Shindand area,” the Afghanistan command stated in a press release. “Our extensive investigation reveals that the closest airstrikes carried out were 13 km to the South East of these villages.”
Today’s denial is the second of its kind made this week by ISAF. Afghan officials said a July 14 airstrike in Nuristan and Kunar provinces killed 47 members of a wedding party. An ISAF investigation concluded that it did not kill the civilians as no aircraft were within 40 kilometers of the attack.”

ISAF rejects Farmakan and Bakhtabad villages civilian casualty claim
KABUL, Afghanistan - ISAF has thoroughly investigated and rejects claims that ISAF forces killed more than 50 civilians in the Shindand area. The claims originated in the media from the tribal elder Haji Zalmai and District Chief Mullah Lal Muhammad who said that more than 50 civilians had reportedly been killed in the villages of Farmakan and Bakhtabad on Thursday, July 17.
Our extensive investigation reveals that the closest airstrikes carried out were 13 km to the South East of these villages.
ISAF therefore rejects these claims as baseless.
ISAF always operates giving the highest importance to protecting civilians, and deeply regrets any instances where civilians are mistakenly injured or killed.
It should never be forgotten the insurgents use indiscriminate methods which inevitably lead to deaths of many innocent Afghans.

Troops Capture Five Suspected Militants, Seize Weapons in Baghdad
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, July 18, 2008 Coalition forces detained five suspected militants and seized weapons caches in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad over the past three days, military official said.
Forces captured five suspected Iranian-backed special groups members during operations today in the Adhamiyah section of the capital.
Troops targeted the location of a suspected special groups financier responsible for disbursing funds for propaganda-related activities, military officials said. Coalition forces captured three suspects as they approached the target site and two additional suspects at a separate location nearby.
During operations yesterday, combined troops discovered nearly a dozen weapons caches across Baghdad. The stockpiles contained munitions and mortar rounds, grenades, homemade explosives, mines, bomb-making materials, assault rifles and ammunition, and other military equipment.
In southern Baghdad July 16, an Iraqi citizen guided soldiers from 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, to three rocket-propelled grenades in the Rashid district of the Iraqi capital, a raid that occurred in conjunction with Operation Nor’easter. An explosives ordnance disposal unit hauled the munitions to a coalition forces base for destruction, military officials said.
The 1st Brigade soldiers interact daily with the Iraqi citizens of the Rashid district, said Army Maj. Dave Olson, a spokesman for 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, in Multinational Division Baghdad. “As part of Operation Nor’easter, we continue to provide a safe environment for the citizens of Iraq.”

“March 14ths Terrorism Problemand Ours”
NOAH POLLAK - 07.16.2008 - 4:22 PM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “If Siniora and Jumblatt wish to bring Lebanon into alliance with the western world, their leadership in both style and substance must refuse to celebrate terrorists or join Hezbollah in rejoicing over the slaughter of Jews. March 14 has not just betrayed its western allies and supporters; it has betrayed its own mission in Lebanon. How can March 14 rail against the presence of Hezbollah if it simultaneously praises Hezbollahs terrorism? Lebanon will never be able to repudiate Hezbollah by becoming more like Hezbollah.
For those of us who have been ardent supporters of March 14 and who have placed great hopes in the blocs promise to transform Lebanon, todays events come as terrible and disappointing news. So disappointing, in fact, that I suspect many March 14 adherents will reevaluate their support of Lebanons putative reformers until they decide whether they wish to lead their country toward peace and democracy, or toward a dark future of terrorism and death-worship. Unquestionably, there are hundreds of thousands of Lebanese who share these sentiments. I hope their views will one day prevail.”

“U.S. Brotherhood’s Boomerang Effect”
IPT News
July 18, 2008
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Win or lose, efforts by two Islamist groups to purge their names from a list of unindicted co-conspirators in a Hamas-support trial have proven counter-productive. The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and its related financial arm the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT) were named among eight “individuals/entities who are and/or were members of the US Muslim Brotherhood,” in court papers filed in May 2007.
Prosecutors say the groups were part of a broad scheme to support Hamas financially and politically. The Texas-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) was at the heart of that scheme. It and five former officials face a retrial Sept. 8 on charges they conspired to provide material support to Hamas. With that looming, ISNA and NAIT petitioned U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis in June, demanding they be struck from the list.
It is one thing to persuade gullible politicians and journalists that their established roots in the Muslim Brotherhood either don’t exist or don’t matter. But to argue in court does nothing but beg a pointed and damaging response.”

LAX Flight Diverted After Passenger Strips
KTLA News
July 18, 2008, 4:01 PM PDT
ARTICLE SNIPPET: LOS ANGELES An American Airlines flight from Boston to LAX was diverted to Oklahoma City on Friday after a passenger stripped, put his clothes back on and then tried to open an emergency exit door.
American Flight 725, a Boeing 757 with 151 passengers and seven crew on board, arrived in Oklahoma City at 1:35 p.m. CDT and was back in the air an hour later on the way to Los Angeles, said Tim Smith, a spokesman for American Airlines.
ARTICLE SNIPPET: According to Johnson, the passenger emerged from a bathroom without his clothes on.
He was asked to go back to the bathroom to put his clothes on and he did and went back to his seat and then allegedly attempted to open an aircraft emergency exit door, Johnson said.
Members of the Major League Soccer team, the New England Revolution, were on the flight. They were able to subdue him, he said.

600 U.S. Taliban?
IBD Editorials ^ | July 18, 2008
Posted on July 18, 2008 5:07:42 PM PDT by Kaslin
War On Terror: After 9/11, Pakistan promised to close its radical madrassas as part of anti-terror reforms. Now we learn they’re not only still open, but also recruiting and brainwashing American boys.
All told, 600 American children are being indoctrinated into jihad in 22 madrassas across Pakistan. A U.S. filmmaker stumbled on them while tracing the path of the London suicide bombers. He discovered they attended the same radical Islamic schools. A congressional delegation has confirmed his findings.
One particularly radical school in Karachi freely displays a banner at its main gate urging Muslims to join the Taliban. At least 80 Americans are enrolled at Jamia Binoria, an international school. Many of its graduates joined the Taliban and became commanders.
Another jihadist seminary in Pakistan connected to Jamia Binoria brainwashed John Walker Lindh, the American Taliban now serving time for attacking U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.
The mullahs who run these terrorist hatcheries come to America to recruit boys, many of them from Lindh’s home state of California. Jamia Binoria’s headmaster, Mufti Mohammad Naeem, travels to the U.S. each year during Ramadan to meet with Muslim parents like a college football coach recruiting prospects.

“RELIGIOUS LEARNING IN PAKISTAN
Antenna up on Islamic schools
U.S. officials wary of possible al-Qaida recruiting”
By STEWART M. POWELL
WASHINGTON
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Robert Heibel, a former FBI deputy director of counterterrorism, says the “antennae of the FBI have gone up” in response to Pakistani-Americans returning from training at religious schools in Pakistan where they might be exposed to al-Qaida recruiters.
“The FBI would be very interested in all of these people when they return,” Heibel said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see the bureau do some mass interviews.”
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said al-Qaida and other extremist groups try to recruit “non-traditional (Muslims), who look more Western.”
He added, “It is going on.””

July 10, 2008
Mr. MCCAUL of Texas (for himself, Mr. GALLEGLY, Mr. BURTON of Indiana, Mr. CANTOR, and Mr. SHUSTER) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs
RESOLUTION
Encouraging the United States Secretary of State to work with the Government of Pakistan to secure the return to the United States of all American children being educated in madrassas in Pakistan.
Whereas numerous acts of terrorism can be linked to certain madrassas, or Islamic schools, in Pakistan, as reported by the Chicago Tribune, the Voice of America, the Heritage Foundation, and several other sources;
Whereas Afghanistan’s Taliban movement itself began among students attending radical Pakistani madrassas;
Whereas extremist madrassas begin the radicalization of children as young as five years old;
Whereas radical Pakistani madrassas have been called an `incubator for Jihad’ by Jihad Watch and Eric Ellis of the Bulletin/Newsweek;
Whereas the former Pakistani Government, recognizing the dangers of a new generation of homegrown terrorists, ordered all foreign students in madrassas to return to their homelands;
Whereas hundreds of American children have been sent to Pakistan to study in madrassas and have not returned home;
Whereas American children are being deprived of their right to an impartial formal education, including instruction in math, English, history, and other essential subjects;
Whereas American children in the radical Jamia Binoria madrassa in Karachi, Pakistan, tell of beatings and torture suffered at the hands of their instructors;
Whereas the radical Jamia Binoria madrassa allowed Osama Bin Laden to address its students on the importance of jihad just before the attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001;
Whereas the radical Jamia Binoria madrassa is, according to Asia Times, the place where Al-Qaeda and the Taliban formed their partnership;
Whereas the recent elections in Pakistan are proof of the Pakistani people’s commitment to true democratic reform;
Whereas the new, democratically elected Government of Pakistan has expressed its willingness to be a responsible and active member of the global community;
Whereas Pakistan has been a committed partner in the global war on terror; and
Whereas it is in the interest of both the Pakistani and United States Governments to continue to work together to combat radical terrorist ideology: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that the United States Secretary of State should work with the Government of Pakistan to immediately identify and return to the United States all American children currently being educated in madrassas in Pakistan.

PARIS, France (CNN) — Explosives used to destroy land mines have disappeared from a site near Lyon, France, the French Interior Ministry said Friday.
About 62 pounds (28 kilograms) of explosives were stolen from a depot at the civil security site at Fort de Corbas, the ministry said in a written statement, because of an apparent breach in the site’s protection.
Michele Alliot-Marie, France’s minister of the interior, immediately suspended the head of the security center and started an investigation.
French anti-terrorism authorities and the Lyon police also are participating in the investigation, the statement
