In visits I paid to North Yemen prior to unification, I was amazed at how much hostility and resentment government officials and ordinary citizens expressed toward the United States. Yemenis were especially incensed about American support for Israel, and more importantly, for Saudi Arabia Yemen's neighbor with which it was frequently at odds over the course of the 20th century.
Yemen seeks to roll up Shi'ite network
Yemen has launched a crackdown on Shi'ite insurgents aligned with Iran. The Interior Ministry has directed security forces to track and arrest hundreds of suspected Shi'ite insurgents in major cities in Yemen. So far, scores of Shi'ites, including eight suspected insurgency leaders, have been detained.
Dengue fever claims 3 lives in western Yemen
According to a report released by the infectious diseases supervision bureau of the health ministry late last month, 115 cases of dengue fever had been diagnosed in five provinces since the beginning of this year and three of them had died.
Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) are designing a ventilation system that could protect schools, hospitals, and other public buildings from chemical warfare and bioterrorist attacks, thus making the buildings "immune".
Scientists unravel early infectious process of respiratory pathogen and bioterrorism agent
Researchers at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) have identified a cell type believed to play a role in controlling the early infectious process against Francisella tularensis, a respiratory pathogen and bioterrorism agent that is the cause of tularemia.

“Large convoy will move Iraqi uranium to Ontario facility”
Cheryl Cornacchia , Canwest News Service
Published: Sunday, July 06, 2008
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MONTREAL - The huge shipment of concentrated uranium that arrived by ship in Montreal from Iraq on Saturday will be transported by truck this week through Quebec to northern Ontario.
About 50 trucks will be required to move the uranium, thought to be the last stocks of Saddam Hussein’s nuclear program, to a processing facility operated by Cameco Corp. in Blind River, Ont., a company official said Sunday.
The 550 tonnes of concentrated natural uranium, also known as yellowcake, was purchased in a U.S.-brokered deal reported to be worth tens of millions of dollars.
Cameco is the world’s largest publicly traded uranium company.
The shipment “is not top secret,” said Charlie Martens, a superintendent of analytical services at Cameco’s Blind River plant. “It’s just because of where it’s coming from” that there is so much interest.”
In the six-and-a-half years that the U.S. government has been fingerprinting insurgents, detainees and ordinary people in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa, hundreds have turned out to share an unexpected background, FBI and military officials said. They have criminal arrest records in the United States.
There was the suspected militant fleeing Somalia who had been arrested on a drug charge in New Jersey. And the man stopped at a checkpoint in Tikrit who claimed to be a dirt farmer but had 11 felony charges in the United States, including assault with a deadly weapon.
Interesting isn’t it.

“Suicide bombing outside Lal Masjid in Islamabad kills 19”
By BILL ROGGIO
July 6, 2008 1:47 PM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A suicide bomber killed 19 Pakistanis, including 15 policemen, in an attack outside a police station in Islamabad. More than 40 Pakistanis were reported wounded.
“Most of the injured include policemen,” Geo TV reported. The police station chief was among those killed in the attack. The “death toll is expected to mount considering the intensity of the blast.”
The attack occurred on the anniversary of the Pakistani government assault on the Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque. One year ago, the Pakistani government ordered a siege and subsequent full-scale assault on the Lal Masjid, after its leaders attempted to impose sharia, or Islamic law, in neighborhoods in the heart of Islamabad. Their followers kidnapped policemen and prostitutes, and beat those who would not comply with sharia.
The mosque and madrassa, the Jamia Hasfa, were run by Taliban-linked extremists Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rasheed Ghazi. More than 100 extremists, including Ghazi, were killed during the attack and several hundred were captured, including Aziz. Eleven Pakistani soldiers were killed during the operation.”

“40 killed in Afghan Indian embassy attack [UPDATE: Video]”
The Times of India ^ | 7 July, 2008 | The Times of India

SNIPPET: “KABUL: A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-filled car into the gates of the Indian embassy in Kabul, leaving at least 40 people dead, officials and a witness said. ( Watch video )
“The number of deaths at this time is 28, while 141 people were wounded, half of them hospitalised,” health ministry spokesman Abdullah Fahim said, adding that the figure was based on information from several hospitals.
The blast destroyed about four cars outside the embassy in the heart of the city, and flesh and broken limbs were scattered at the scene, an Afghan witness said. The bomber hit the thick embassy gate, he said.
“It was a suicide car bomb in front of the Indian embassy,” interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said. “There are casualties but at this time I don’t have a figure.”
The powerful rush-hour blast sent a plume of brown smoke into the air and could be heard across the city centre. It shattered the windows of shops several hundred metres (yards) away, an AFP reporter said.”
Good doggie.
