Why a McCain Win May Be Bad for GOP, Good for Democrats
Real Clear Politics ^ | 13 June 2008 | Stuart Rothenberg

Republicans and conservatives are rallying behind Sen. John McCain's White House bid, but not because they are so enamored with him or his agenda. Instead, their loyalty is based on their perception that Illinois Sen. Barack Obama as president, particularly with large Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress, would be utterly disastrous.

Regardless of whether you agree with them about the results of a Democratic presidential victory later this year, a McCain victory might produce its own series of domino-like events that ultimately might hurt the Grand Old Party.

...I don't necessarily agree with Stewart that a McCain victory in November would lead to the "eradication" of the GOP, but it's easy to see how a McCain presidency could end up being a nightmare for Republicans.

In the worst-case scenario, a McCain victory in November could likely lead to a Republican bloodletting that would tear apart the GOP well before 2012, contribute to another good Democratic election in 2010 and hand Democrats such a strong advantage during redistricting that Republicans wouldn't be able to recover for years.

The “serious identity problem” of the republican party is its betrayal of the American people by embracing the policies of the left. Spending like dems in order to buy votes, being too gutless to declare global warming the hoax it is, joining dems to prevent drilling in Anwar and elsewhere—these are the things which did such profound damage to the party. Liberals, RINOS, limp-wrists and the total silence of actual conservatives when they should have been demanding that the liberals, RINOS and limp-wrists either leave the party or do the job of properly representing their constituents. Conservative voters sent repubs to congress in order to protect this nation from the left. Those republicans betrayed them, putting both the nation and their liberties at risk. McCain is one of those traitors...in fact, one of the leaders. His willingness to fast track amnesty through the Senate and past the American people all for the sake of a few extra votes is despicable and indefenseable. Whether it is he or Barry Hussein who brings 100 million mexicans into the US, complete with the accompanying disease, crime, drugs and welfare drain, what is the difference? It will require a second revolution to return this nation to the American people. And that will mean armed citizens defending the rights which the left will be gleefully taking away. In the final outcome, who we elect will not matter. The question will be whether Americans have grown too fat, too lazy and too uncaring to defend what was given to us free of charge 200+ years ago. I’m not optimistic.

I thought we settled this question in 1992. If eight years of the Clintons plus their enduring legacy in the executive departements, the CIA, the FBI, and the judiciary isn't enough to convince conservatives that an Obama presidency would be a very BAD thing, then nothing is.

Conservatives who hope for an Obama victory truly belong in the Stupid Party.

I could see a case where voting for a moderate democrat over an outright RINO might be a reasonable idea, but Obama is not even close to moderate.

Wake up, people! Are you going to stand by while a bunch of America-hating, racist radicals take over the White House?

McCain is not the different then Obama.

Anyone who thinks that is either ill-informed, or just plain stupid.

Berkeley, like Massachusetts, both used to be heavily Republican bastions. Know what lost them ? Incompetent RINO non-leadership. When you have liberal rodents (RINOs) invading the GOP to wreak that sort of havoc, we shouldn’t be surprised at the end results of absolute and total Democrat domination. *omney was a prime example of it, as was his mentor, William Weld, who WAS a Democrat agent and friend of Hillary’s. These are the real cancers that need to be excised first before we ever take on the rodents in a general election.

“Stop the ridiculous comments and comparisons.”

It’s not ridiculous, and it was no comparison. Mcain/Feingold. Ever hear of it? The urine running down your thigh over Obama (and he would be horrible) tells me that you are not posting hateful things against fellow Freepers out of some principle. Just fear.

“Aren’t you the one who accused Cindy Mccain of being a Iraqi war profiteer and did not even know that her two boys are Marines in Iraqi or are you the MIA conspiracy guy?”

Neither. Did you stop beating your wife?

“You are very busy trashing MCCIN and trying to get to not VOTE to keep a Marxist named OBama from shutting us all up.”

I won’t pretend that I even understand this rant but I will tell you that I don’t care who you vote for. Matter of fact, in order that there be no confusion in the future, you should check out my tagline.

Given what a bad field both parties put forth I’ve been thinking for over a year now that the 08 winner will probably (put it at about 75%) be a 1 termer. And historically the president that beats a 1 termer gets 2. Plus lets not forget the congressional mid-term problems (party of the president usually loses seats in the mid-term), and with the projections of the GOP losing seats this year, if McCain’s ‘12 successor brings seats (which usually happens) that would be 4 congressional elections in a row where the GOP lost seats.

Of course my 1 term projection revolves entirely around the idea that this year’s terrible field was an aberration. If the field in ‘12 is just as bad or worse then all bets are off.

Not good for the courts. Stevens would replaced with a younger model marxist. And should one of the good Justices run into some health problems.....

You are clueless and you are trying to get Obama elected.
Your comparing a radical Marxist to a moderate Republican.
You are intentionally peddling half truths and quite a new lies to get people to sit out this election. You can not handle that there are people who see Obama as a dangerous radical who considers US the enemy that need to be POLICED NOW and shut up later when they take power . But you are so wrapped up in your McCain hate that the Obama drones probably call you “ a useful idiot “.

Real anger at McCain is easily seen from this thread. Looking at it, my guess is most is a function of the illegal problem.

Scratch a McCain Basher and watch a xenophobe bleed. This issue will be resolved shortly after the beginning of the next Congress. Most big time elected officials hate this issue and any other issue that results in public pressure determined by blind emotion.

So anticipate, hopefully, a clear way to identify illegals when they apply for a job. Also, there will be a plan to provide a way for those presently here to become citizens. Finally, all of this will be done with surprising ease once the fear of immediate voter outrage is lessened.

"Must’ve been pre-Kennedy."

In the case of Berkeley (and San Francisco, also a premier GOP bastion for a long time -- which still had a GOP Mayor into the 1960s), yes. MA declined but made a comeback in the '80s and '90s. Weld and *omney destroyed the last shreds of competitiveness... and deliberately so.

Yes, it was a wild one in which a bunch of OBama monitors and operatives accidentally outed themselves . It was the Obama birth certificate posts.

“Personally, I won’t be voting for McLame, and will just let the chips fall where they may.”

If all the conservative voters who say they are not voting for McCain actually vote third party, a write in, or stay home, Obama will be our next President. I am not happy with McCain but can’t allow Obama anyway near the White House. Now listening to Romney and know McCain will not pick him for VP. Romney is against closing GITMO, against amnesty, against Cap & Trade, and FOR drilling in America. Even so, Romney says he is working to elect McCain because Obama would cause too much damage to America.

Our Supreme Court is not going to change at all. If Obama gets elected, he's going to replace John Paul Stevens, Ruth Ginsburg and perhaps David Souter.

So really the status quo continues, we have John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito who are all relatively young. Anthony Scalia is getting old but he'll be able to hold out at least another decade or so.

It seems to me that people are ignoring what will happen to other republicans running for office when they crank up the BS about Mccain. When you don’t support your party you get more of the other party.

You don’t want to vote for him fine, but please think of what happens when you let democrats control the whole enchilada and at least tone down the infighting.
