Coalition forces strike foreign terrorist network
BAGHDAD Coalition forces killed four terrorists and destroyed two foreign terrorist safe-houses in northwest Iraq Saturday, also capturing two wanted men in Mosul.
Near Biaj, about 130 kilometers southwest of Mosul, Coalition forces targeted several foreign terrorist safe-houses. At the first location, the force immediately came under attack by small arms fire. Coalition forces responded in self-defense, returning fire and calling for supporting aircraft to engage the enemy. Four terrorists were killed in the ensuing engagement.
Coalition forces discovered a vehicle with a foreign license plate adjacent to one of the target buildings. Inside the building they found weapons, ammunition, military equipment and graffiti indicating it served as a foreign terrorist safe-house. Coalition forces safely destroyed the weapons, vehicle and two buildings to prevent their future use in terrorist activities.
In Mosul, Coalition forces captured two men believed to conspire with senior AQI leaders in the city and detained three additional suspects.
Todays operations in northern Iraq targeting foreign terrorist networks are helping to degrade their ability to carry out attacks on Iraqi civilians and security forces, said Maj. John Hall, MNF-I spokesman.

“Court hears accused terrorists’ ideology
Men talk of imperative to retaliate, in wiretaps played at the trial of a 20-year-old man”
Melissa Leong, Canwest News Service
Published: Friday, June 06, 2008
BRAMPTON, Ont. —
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The court heard that he had spent “every last penny” — or about $4,000 — on a shipment of 13 firearms from Mexico.
The total cost of $10,000 was due at the end of March or the supplier would have to sell them on the street, he said in a wire-tap. To raise money, he met a man who was running an elaborate bank scam. The fraudster, identified as Talib, was using “white,” “blond,” women, possibly “crack heads,” to take out bank loans with fraudulent information. They would cash the cheques at a payday lending store.
Berlin - A coup plot against Syrian President Bashar al- Assad was quietly crushed without the world noticing, the German newspaper Die Welt was set to report Saturday, quoting German and "foreign" intelligence sources. It said Syria's military intelligence chief, Assef Shaukat, had plotted to seize power while Assad was hosting an Arab League meeting in Damascus in February. Shaukat, who is an in-law to the president, and 100 intelligence officers had been arrested.
Die Welt said Assad had been tipped off by Imad Mughniyah, a senior member of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah organization in Lebanon. Mughniyah was killed a few days later in a bomb blast on February 12 in Damascus. The sources said it was possible that associates of Shaukat had assassinated him in revenge. Releasing the story Friday in advance of going to print, Die Welt said some of the plotters were allegedly linked to violent Islamist groups.
Die Welt said the Syrian embassy in Berlin had rejected the coup story as utterly untrue. Without naming a source, the newspaper said German diplomats were aware of the coup story but had not been able to confirm it as fact.
US targets al Qaeda operatives with links to Iran, Pakistan
June 6, 2008
The US Treasury Department has added three al Qaeda operatives from the Gulf States to the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorist Individuals. The three operatives have provided logistical, financial, and material support to al Qaeda and the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group throughout the Middle East. Two of these operatives have provided direct support for al Qaeda leaders based in Iran and two have operated in the tribal regions in Pakistan.
The US has designated Khalifa Muhammad Turki al Subaiy, a Qatari national; and Adil Muhammad Mahmud Abd al Khaliq and Abd al Rahman Muhammad Jaffar 'Ali, Bahraini nationals, as Specially Designated Global Terrorist Individuals under Executive Order 13224. The designation allows the US to freeze their assets, prevent them from using financial institutions, and prosecute them for terrorist activities.

BIG DITTO.
MOSCOW - A recent gas leak in northeast China near the Russian border that killed three people contained phosgene, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday citing environmental experts. "An expert evaluation confirmed that the leak contained phosgene gas," Andrei Nesterenko said, adding that eight people had been poisoned as a result of the leak.
Phosgene is a chemical warfare agent with a lethal concentration of 0.01-0.03 milligrams per liter. There is no known antidote. Earlier Friday, a Russian emergencies ministry spokeswoman quoted Chinese authorities as saying the chemical leak in the town of Qiqihar in the Heilongjiang province was no threat to the environment.
Irina Andrianova quoted the Chinese general consulate in the Russian Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk as saying that on June 5 a cylinder containing unidentified gas "disintegrated" causing a gas leak. "Local authorities and environmental experts disposed of the cylinder and dealt with the consequences of the accident," she added.

A chiropractor was jailed after a bomb scare led authorities to find explosives materials inside of his Park City office, police said. A bomb scare occurred at the chiropractors office earlier this week, when someone reported seeing bomb-making equipment in the hallway.
As investigators searched and secured the office building, they reportedly found more equipment inside the office of chiropractor Matthew Zarit. Officials believe that the equipment in the hallway also belonged to Zarit. Zarit, 36, was eventually arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail. Authorities believe he intended to blow up the office building with the bomb-making materials which included gasoline, sodium hydroxide, road flares and a fuse. Zarit faces two felony charges of attempted arson and possession of an incendiary device.

Chemical plant accident creates laughing gas cloud
An accident in a chemical plant Friday created a frightening-looking cloud of "laughing gas," government and emergency officials said. Nobody was reported to be injured or to be giggling uncontrollably.
The Northern Ireland Department of the Environment said workers at Albion Chemicals Ltd. poured nitric acid into a disposal container that was contaminated, causing a reaction that produced plumes of nitrous oxide. The gas, inhaled as an analgesic, has been known since the late 18th century as "laughing gas." It has a range of medical and industrial uses and is not toxic.
