:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
The Hunt for American al Qaeda

The United States is turning up the heat in the hunt for the California boy turned al Qaeda operative, Adam Gadahn, who has been charged with treason and is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan. If caught and convicted, Gadahn could face the death penalty.

The State Department along with the Department of Diplomatic Security announced the beginning of a publicity campaign in Afghanistan urging locals to provide any information on Gadahn's whereabouts, with a reward if the information leads to his capture.

Radio advertisements with information concerning the $1 million reward have already begun airing. Additionally, printed materials including matchbooks, handbills and posters will be distributed throughout the region in the coming weeks in attempts to elicit cooperation from members of the Afghan community. UPDATE:

“Court orders new sentence for al-Qaida member”
June 6, 2008 - 7:26pm
By MATTHEW BARAKAT
Associated Press Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “McLEAN, Va. (AP) - A federal appeals court upheld the conviction Friday of a Virginia man convicted of joining al-Qaida and plotting to assassinate President Bush, but said that he must be resentenced.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a 30-year prison term and ordered a new sentencing hearing for Ahmed Omar Abu Ali. Prosecutors had argued that the judge improperly deviated from federal sentencing guidelines that called for life in prison.

The ruling is a major victory for prosecutors in one of their most high-profile terrorism cases.

Born in Houston, Abu Ali, 27, grew up in the Washington suburb of Falls Church and was valedictorian of a private Islamic high school. He joined al-Qaida after traveling to Saudi Arabia to attend college in 2002. As a member of a Medina-based al-Qaida cell, Abu Ali discussed numerous potential terrorist attacks, including a plan to assassinate Bush and a plan to establish a sleeper cell in the United States.”

Pakistan arrests three would-be suicide bombers, seizes a ton of explosives
Looks like they were planning some serious Interior Spiritual Struggle.

“Pakistani authorities arrest 3, seize explosives,” by Munir Ahmad for Associated Press, June 6 (thanks to all who sent this in):

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistani authorities arrested three suspected suicide bombers and seized more than a ton of explosives in a suspected terror plot near the capital, officials said Friday.

Senior police officer Rao Mohammed Iqbal told The Associated Press that several suspects, including the three alleged bombers, were arrested in the operation late Thursday in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

He provided no details on what the bombers allegedly wanted to target and whether the vehicles had been rigged to detonate.

However, two security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media, said the arrested men were suspected of wanting to target “sensitive installations.”...

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Friday raised the spectre of a full-scale military operation in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip despite Egyptian attempts to mediate a truce.
“According to the information as it is now, the pendulum is much closer to tough military action,” Olmert told journalists on arrival in Israel following a three-day trip to the United States.

His comments came a day after a man was killed in southern Israel in a mortar attack claimed by the armed wing of Hamas, the Islamist movement that has run Gaza since it ousted forces loyal to secular Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas a year ago.

**** If Israel is smart, they’d handle Gaza ASAP and secure it, then they could face the Hezzies and Syria with a secured rear area - and not surrounded as Iran wants them to be.

Colombia: 4 people with ammo for FARC arrested
Published: 06.07.08, 18:28 / Israel News

Colombia arrested a Venezuelan National Guard officer who authorities said was carrying 40,000 AK-47 assault rifle cartridges to Marxist rebels, a charge that could increase already high tensions between the countries.

The man, identified as Manuel Agudo, was captured on Friday in the southern Colombian province of Vichada, near the Venezuelan border along with another Venezuelan and two Colombians, Attorney General Mario Iguaran said. (Reuters)

Speaking of assault rifles, here's a FR update:

Guns missing from HAFB found

A missing case of military assault rifles has turned up on Hill Air Force Base, but officials still don't know who took them.

Whoever took them had a change of heart. He brought the weapons back for base officials to find this morning.

Maj. Shannon Smith, air base wing security commander, said, "What we think happened was this was a crime of opportunity."

“Israel attacks USS Liberty”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “ In all, 34 Americans were killed and 171 were wounded in the two-hour attack. In the attack’s aftermath, the Liberty managed to limp to a safe port.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Israel later apologized for the attack and offered $6.9 million in compensation, claiming that it had mistaken the Liberty for an Egyptian ship. However, Liberty survivors, and some former U.S. officials, believe that the attack was deliberate, staged to conceal Israel’s pending seizure of Syria’s Golan Heights, which occurred the next day. The ship’s listening devices would likely have overheard Israeli military communications planning this controversial operation. Captain McGonagle was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic command of the Liberty during and after the attack.”

Terrorism should be on our minds daily

Terrorism is a local issue. Unfortunately, many people see it as something happening in another country, or think the incidents here -- such as the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 -- are unlikely to happen again.

Children aged 13 groomed for terror

Sir Norman Bettison, chief constable of West Yorkshire, said some bright children entering secondary school were picking up extremist messages from internet chat rooms and people who wanted to turn them into terrorists.

His force has now identified at least 10 youngsters – including two 13-year-olds – as “vulnerable” and formally referred them to a programme to wean them away from radicalism.

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
June 7, 2008

President’s Radio Address

In Focus: Defense

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Congress will soon vote on legislation to fund our troops serving on the front lines of the war on terror. This is an opportunity for Congress to give our men and women in uniform the tools they need to protect us, and Congress should approve these vital funds immediately.

Congress has had this funding request for more than a year, and there is no reason for further delay. This money is urgently needed to support military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. I put forward some reasonable requirements this bill must meet. First, this bill must give our troops the resources they need to defeat the terrorists and extremists. Second, the bill must not tie the hands of our commanders. Third, the bill must not exceed the reasonable and responsible funding levels I have requested.

Congress has had 16 months to decide how they will meet these requirements, and now the time has come for them to support our troops in harm’s way. If Congress does not act, critical accounts at the Department of Defense will soon run dry. At the beginning of next month, civilian employees may face temporary layoffs. The department will have to close down a vital program that is getting potential insurgents off the streets and into jobs. The Pentagon will run out of money it needs to support critical day-to-day operations that help keep our Nation safe. And after July, the department will no longer be able to pay our troops — including those serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Our men and women in uniform and their families deserve better than this. Around the world, our troops are taking on dangerous missions with skill and determination. In Afghanistan, they are delivering blows to the Taliban and al Qaeda. In Iraq, they’ve helped bring violence down to its lowest point since late March of 2004. Civilian deaths are down. Sectarian killings are down. As security has improved, the economy has improved as well, and political reconciliation is taking place at the grassroots and national levels. The Iraqi security forces are becoming more capable, and as they do, our troops are beginning to come home under a policy of return on success.

Each day, the men and women of our Armed Forces risk their lives to make sure their fellow citizens are safer. They serve with courage and honor. They’ve earned the respect of all Americans. And they deserve the full support of Congress. I often hear members of Congress say they oppose the war, but still support the troops. Now they have a chance to prove it. Congress should pass a responsible funding bill that gives our men and women in uniform the resources they need — and the support they have earned.

Thank you for listening.

END
