SNIPPET: “In an interview with the London daily Al-Hayat, former Bahraini army chief of staff Sheikh Maj.-Gen. Khalifa ibn Ahmad Aal-Khalifa accused Iran of playing a part in the recent disturbances in Bahrain, and criticized Iran’s policy of interfering in the affairs of other countries. Rare tuberculosis cases linked to Mexican cheese
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER ^ | June 5, 2008 | By DOUG IRVING
Posted on June 5, 2008 4:29:58 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer
Researchers have found a potentially deadly strain of tuberculosis infection spreading through Latino communities in Southern California and suspect the disease is being imported from Mexico in unpasteurized cheese.
Health officials in Orange County, though, say they have not seen any cases of the rare strain of tuberculosis in at least five years. They credit a long-running campaign to educate people about the dangers of eating unlabeled cheese and other dairy products.
Tuberculosis is an infection of the lungs that kills nearly 2 million people worldwide every year. The strain of tuberculosis that researchers found in San Diego County is more often linked to cattle, but can spread to people through raw dairy products.
That particular strain remains rare, even in San Diego County, the researchers concluded. But more than 90 percent of the people who were sickened by it were Latino, mostly from Mexico.
The researchers from the University of California, San Diego, pointed to a kind of cheese known as queso fresco, or fresh cheese, as the likely culprit. The soft, crumbly cheese is especially popular in Latino communities.

rosecutors allege that Urs Tinner, who was arrested in 2004, oversaw machine work in Malaysia on gas centrifuge parts that were intercepted by Western intelligence services. Gas centrifuges are needed to enrich uranium for use in nuclear weapons.
1975 LATE : (SWITZERLAND : A Q KHAN ATTENDS NUCLEAR TRADE SHOW) Dr. Khan studied in Pakistan and Europe. After he secured a job in the Netherlands in the early 1970’s at a plant making centrifuges - the devices that purify uranium - Dutch intelligence officials began watching him. By late 1975, they grew so wary, after he was observed at a nuclear trade show in Switzerland asking suspicious questions, that they moved him to a different area of the company to keep him away from uranium enrichment work. “There was an awareness,” said Frank Slijper of the Dutch Campaign against Arms Trade, who recently wrote a report on Dr. Khan’s early days, “that he was a potential danger.” Dr. Khan suddenly left the country that December [1975], called home by his government for its atomic project. Years later, investigators discovered that he had taken blueprints for the centrifuges with him. In Pakistan, Dr. Khan was working to develop a bomb to counter India’s, and Washington was intent on stopping the project.-———— “As Nuclear Secrets Emerge in Khan Inquiry, More Are Suspected,” by William J. 1980s : (A Q KHAN VISITS CHINA) Dr. Khan quickly led the agents to Beijing. It was there in the early 1980’s that Dr. Khan pulled off a coup: obtaining the blueprints for a weapon that China had detonated in its fourth nuclear test, in 1966. The design was notable because it was compact and the first one China had developed that could easily fit atop a missile.
American intelligence agencies only learned the full details of the transactions earlier this year [2004] when the Libyans handed over two large plastic bags with the names of an Islamabad tailor on one side and a dry-cleaner on other - one of several clues that it had come from the Khan Laboratories. The design inside included drawings of more than 100 parts, all fitting in a sphere about 34 inches in diameter, just the right size for a rocket.
Equally remarkable were the handwritten notations in the margins. “They made reference to Chinese ministers, presumably involved in the deal,” one official who reviewed it disclosed. And there was also a reference to “Munir,” apparently Munir Khan, Dr. Khan’s rival who ran the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and was in a contest with Dr. Khan to put together a Pakistani weapon that would match India’s. In that race, size was critical, because only a small weapon could be put atop Pakistani missiles.
One note in the margin of the design, the official said, was that “Munir’s bomb would be bigger.” Intelligence experts believe that Dr. Khan traded his centrifuge technology to the Chinese for their bomb design.-————— “As Nuclear Secrets Emerge in Khan Inquiry, More Are Suspected,” by William J. Part of the problem in finding the truth is that cross-border transactions out of such financial havens as Switzerland are smothered in banking secrecy.
But even with that secrecy and shortly after the Sept.11, 2001, attacks on the United States both MIGA and its chief founder and longtime president, Ahmed Idris Nasreddin, landed on the U.N. watchlist of entities and individuals belonging to, or affiliated with Al Qaeda. During that time, he helped set up and manage a money-laundering network that was among the most sophisticated in the world, said investigators. A second manager was Tareq Aziz, Iraq’s Foreign Minister, according to a Treasury Department source. Aziz, also in U.S. custody, traveled widely under diplomatic immunity. Estimates of the hidden loot range as high as $40 billion, but Saddam’s personal trove “is in the single-digit billions, not more than 10,” according to investigator John Fawcett. “I’m kind of conservative in calculating his wealth,” said Fawcett, who has focused on Saddam’s finances for more than three years, most recently on behalf of Kreindler & Kreindler, a Park Ave. law firm. The firm is trying pinpoint the links between Saddam’s assets and financing of Al Qaeda. Once identified, those assets could be seized, recovered in court proceedings and distributed to families of those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “We think Saddam’s laundered money was used in part to provide financial support to Al Qaeda, and we’re looking at billions of dollars hidden in financial institutions and companies,” said lawyer James Kreindler. -——How Saddam hid his dirty money - Billions in oil sales stashed overseas New York Daily News ^ | 5/04/03 | WILLIAM SHERMAN

SEPTEMBER 12, 2006 : (SWITZERLAND : CIA UNDER ATTACK BY SWISS TERRORIST SUPPORTERS...) BERN, Switzerland — Swiss authorities have found enough evidence to seek a full investigation into allegations the CIA was trying to obtain personal details of about 500 labor union members, most of them Arabs, officials said Friday. Espionage by foreign agents in Switzerland is illegal and often results in expulsion of the suspects. The investigations began Sept. 12, the same day the daily tabloid Blick first reported that an unidentified CIA agent based at the U.S. Embassy in Bern had paid a Swiss informant in an attempt to obtain information about Arabs in Switzerland suspected of involvement in terrorist financing. Jeanette Balmer, spokeswoman of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, said intensive investigations have confirmed those suspicions. “Moreover, the people in question in the case could be identified,” she said. Balmer told The Associated Press authorities had been investigating illegal activity by a foreign state and espionage. She said the prosecutor’s office would now seek a warrant from the governing Cabinet which is required for authorities to continue their investigation in cases classed as “political crimes.”(Excerpt) Read more at newsday.com ...-—— Swiss Find Evidence of CIA Spy Attempt AP ^ | 27 Oct 2006 | AP

Coalition Air Strikes Kill Militants in Afghanistan
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, June 5, 2008 Several militants were killed and five others were detained yesterday as coalition forces disrupted anti-government operations in Afghanistans Helmand province.
Coalition troops searched several compounds in Kajaki district, targeting a Taliban leader associated with the murder of several Afghan government officials. During the searches, they identified a militant armed with a rocket-propelled grenade waiting in ambush, and several others consolidating for an attack.
The coalition troops responded with air strikes, killing the militants.
Continuing their search, the troops discovered AK-47 assault rifles, ammunition vests, ammunition, grenades and a large cache of narcotics. The weapons and drugs were destroyed to prevent future use.
In other news from Afghanistan, Marines with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the British forces of Task Force Helmand captured a series of enemy strong points and defensive positions, mostly ridding the area in northern Garmsir of insurgents.
In the weeks since the Marines started operations in southern Helmand, the insurgents have resisted the advancement of troops and held ground in the district, officials said. The Marines have encountered disorganized resistance in about 150 engagements with insurgents using small arms, indirect fire, and rocket-propelled grenades.
The last engagement was June 1, when an insurgent attempted to engage NATO International Security Assistance Force troops with a grenade, officials said.
The 24th MEU is continuing clearing operations in the district.
The area in and around Garmsir is currently stable, but there remains a great deal of work to be done, said Marine Col. Peter Petronzio, 24th MEU commander.
The Marines also are conducting security and census patrols throughout the villages to determine the civilian population living in and moving back to the district. During these patrols, Marines have had many interactions with the Afghan population.
Many of the people who have approached our patrols have told us how happy they are that the insurgents have left. They seem genuinely glad to be home, said Marine Lt. Col. Anthony Henderson, commander of the MEUs reinforced infantry battalion.
The Marines also have found many weapons caches in the areas the insurgents have fled. The caches vary in size and contain a range of items that include bomb-making materials, RPGs, ammunition, mines and unexploded ordnance. Through patrols or based on tips from local citizens, Marines already have discovered 13 caches in June, bringing the total to almost 50 since the start of clearing operations, officials said.

Coalition Forces in Iraq Round Up Iran-Backed Enemy Fighters
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, June 5, 2008 Coalition forces in Iraq captured an alleged leader and a suspected primary weapons smuggler and financier for Iranian-backed enemy fighters today.
Acting on intelligence information, coalition forces conducted a raid on the home of the suspected special groups leader in Mahawil, south of Baghdad. He surrendered without incident.
In a separate operation east of Kut, intelligence tips helped coalition forces track down the hideout of a suspected special groups member who sources allege is the primary weapons smuggler and financier for Iranian-backed enemy elements in that area. The suspect and an associate surrendered when coalition forces stormed their location.
In operations in Iraq yesterday:
— Iraqi soldiers seized various bomb-making components, including a pressure plate, in Baghdads Sadr City district.
— Another Iraqi army unit seized a wired artillery shell, a rocket-propelled grenade and an RPG round. In a separate operation a short time later, soldiers from the same unit discovered four homemade bombs, each made from three 120 mm rounds rigged together and buried underground. An Iraqi army explosives team disarmed the bombs before they were transported for disposal.
— In the West Rashid district of Baghdad, soldiers serving with the 4th Infantry Divisions 1st Brigade Combat Team seized hundreds of pounds of plastic explosives.
— In the Istaqlal area north of Baghdad, soldiers with the 4th Infantry Divisions 3rd Brigade Combat Team discovered a weapons cache that included a flak jacket, AK-47 assault rifles, AK-47 magazines and 7.62 mm rounds.
— Soldiers from the 25th Infantry Divisions 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team found grenade fuses, grenade parts and ammunition rounds northwest of Baghdad. In the same area a short time later, soldiers from the same unit discovered a 120 mm mortar round, a rocket, an 81 mm mortar round, empty 107 mm rocket casings, a base plate, timer fuses and detonation cord.
— In the Shurta area of Rashid, soldiers from the 4th Infantry Divisions 1st Brigade Combat Team found 120 mm mortar rounds and boxes of 12.7 mm ammunition.
