Hospital lost radioactive package
An Ottawa, Ontario, hospital lost a package containing 90 radioactive iodine-125 seeds last year, a newspaper's access to information request showed.
Details of the loss of a courier package by Ottawa Hospital last September were disclosed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and released to the Ottawa Citizen in response to the request.
The seeds are about the size of a piece of rice, and are used in the treatment of prostate cancer. They are only about as radioactive as a dental X-ray, but their movements are tracked by the federal commission, the newspaper said.
They still have not been located, and by now would have lost about 95 percent of their radioactivity, officials said.

ICE launches task force to combat cross-border crime in Southern California
EL CENTRO, Calif. - As part of its ongoing effort to combat cross-border crime and violence, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is launching a Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST) in the Imperial Valley to target the criminal organizations and illegal activity that threaten the safety of residents on both sides of the border.
The ICE-led task force will be made up of officers from federal, state, local and foreign law enforcement agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection - Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI, the Bureau of Land Management and the Mexican law enforcement agency Secretaria de Seguridad Publica.
The Imperial Valley BEST, the 10th BEST group in the nation, will focus on combating the illegal movement of drugs, people and weapons across the border. The Task Force will also seek to identify cross-border tunnels and other potential safety and security risks. The BEST will be involved in all aspects of the enforcement process, from interdiction to prosecution. Ultimately, the group’s goal is to attack and dismantle the criminal organizations involved in cross-border illegal activity, such as narcotics and arms trafficking. In addition, the Task Force will target the violent gangs that pose a continuing threat to residents and law enforcement officers along the border in both the United States and Mexico.
“Cross-border crime is a serious threat to the safety and security of the American public,” said Miguel Unzueta, special agent in charge for the ICE office of investigations in San Diego. “The success of the other BEST teams operating along our borders shows the value of joint enforcement efforts based upon shared intelligence, creative partnerships and strategic thinking.”
In addition to the Imperial Valley, the other BESTs are located in Laredo, El Paso, and Harlingen, Texas; Tucson, Yuma, and Phoenix, Ariz,; Blaine, Wash.; Buffalo, N.Y.; and San Diego, Calif..
In fiscal year 2007, the BESTs nationwide were responsible for more than 500 criminal arrests and nearly 300 criminal indictments, as well as the seizure of more than 2,000 pounds of cocaine, 50,000 pounds of marijuana, 2,300 weapons and nearly $3 million in U.S. currency.
The involvement of Mexican law enforcement in the BESTs has aided in the successful return of criminal fugitives sought in both countries, including the removal to Mexico of one of that nation’s most wanted fugitives. BEST arms smuggling investigations have led to numerous arrests and the seizure of thousands of rounds of ammunition and firearms, including a cache of AK-47 assault rifles destined for Mexico.

ICE Fugitive Operations Teams make 1,808 arrests in six states during month-long cooperative enforcement effort
WASHINGTON - More than 1,800 criminal aliens, immigration fugitives, and immigration violators have been removed from the United States or are facing deportation today following a month-long enforcement effort which partnered neighboring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Fugitive Operations Teams to make arrests in six states.
Of the 1,808 individuals arrested in California, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee, and Texas, 1,069 were immigration fugitives. An immigration fugitive is someone who has ignored a final order of deportation or who has returned to the United States illegally after being removed. More than 70 percent of the aliens taken into custody are immigration fugitives or have criminal histories.
“ICE is committed to protecting the integrity of our immigration system. These enforcement operations ensure that the removal orders handed down by the nation’s immigration courts are carried out,” said Julie L. Myers, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for ICE. “Because of similar successful operations, we are seeing for the first time, a marked decrease in the fugitive alien population. America will always welcome those who wish to enter our country legally, but for those who flaunt our laws, know that you will be removed.”
These operations are carefully planned and professionally implemented. ICE’s fugitive operations teams prioritize cases involving immigration violators who pose a threat to national security and community safety. These include sex offenders, suspected gang members, and those who have convictions for violent crimes. For instance, among those arrested by the fugitive operations teams was a previously deported Mexican national who was convicted in the mid-1990s of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14. Mariano Ceja-Ochoa, 31, was taken into custody by ICE officers in Dana Point, Calif. Ceja is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for felony re-entry after deportation, a violation that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
Since many of these individuals have already been ordered deported, they are subject to immediate removal from the United States. Those arrested during this coordinated operation who have not already been ordered returned to their home countries have been placed in removal proceedings and are awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge.
The Fugitive Operations Program was established in 2003 to eliminate the nation’s backlog of immigration fugitives. Today, ICE has 75 teams deployed across the country and an additional 29 teams will be added by the end of September. Last year, the fugitive operations teams nearly doubled the number of arrests from 2006 - from 15,000 to more than 30,000. Additionally, in 2007, the nation’s fugitive alien population declined for the first time in history and continues to do so - in large part due to the work of the fugitive operations teams and our Fugitive Operations Support Center, which helps to clear outstanding cases. Estimates now place the number of immigration fugitives in the United States at approximately 573,000, a decrease of nearly 60,000 since October 2006.
ICE’s Fugitive Operations Program is an integral part of the comprehensive multi-year plan launched by the Department of Homeland Security to secure America’s borders and reduce illegal immigration. That strategy seeks to gain operational control of both the northern and southern borders, while re-engineering the detention and removal system to ensure that illegal aliens are removed from the country quickly and efficiently.

“US intel chief to consult with IDF”
By YAAKOV KATZ
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The publication of the report raised Israeli ire and delegations from the Mossad and Military Intelligence traveled several times to the US in recent months to present the Americans with Israel’s estimates concerning Iran’s race towards nuclear power.
Defense officials said that McConnell’s visit to Israel was part of the ongoing intelligence dialogue between the two countries and that he would be presented with the most updated Mossad and MI assessments regarding Iran’s nuclear program. MI recently moved up its assessment and now believes that Iran will master centrifuge technology by the end of the year, meaning that Iran could have a nuclear weapon by the end of the decade.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “On Monday, Barak told the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Israel needed to do everything possible to ensure that the Iranians did not obtain nuclear power.”

Tre Arrow pleads guilty in firebombing case (eco-terrorist cops plea)

PORTLAND, Ore. Radical environmentalist Tre Arrow on Tuesday pleaded guilty to arson charges as part of a deal with prosecutors that will keep him behind bars for more than two years.
Arrow, who legally changed his name from Michael Scarpitti, was charged with firebombing three cement trucks at Ross Island Sand & Gravel in Portland and setting fire to logging trucks and a tractor near Estacada.
On his Web site, the 34-year-old said recently he did not want to risk receiving a life prison sentence and called the plea deal an offer he “couldn’t refuse.”
On Tuesday, he entered a guilty plea to two counts of arson during a hearing in federal court in Portland.
As part of the deal, he agreed to receive a sentence of 6-1/2 years in prison. However, he will be given credit for the four years he spent behind bars in British Columbia following his arrest in 2004.
The deal also restricts Arrow from associating with so-called eco-terrorist groups, including the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front.
His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 12.
Arrow will serve his time at a medium-security federal prison in Sheridan in Yamhill County.

Police threaten Christians for preaching in Muslim communities in Britain
CNA ^ | 6/4/2008
Posted on June 5, 2008 2:42:19 AM PDT by markomalley
London, Jun 4, 2008 / 07:24 pm (CNA).- British police said they will not apologize to two Christian preachers who were threatened with arrest by a Muslim police officer for preaching Christianity in Muslim communities in the city of Birmingham.
According to the Telegraph, the incident occurred last February when Christian ministers Arthur Cunningham and Joseph Abraham were handing out leaflets and speaking with four Muslim youths about Christianity in Birmingham. Naeem Naguthney, a Muslim police community support officer told them to cease-and-desist from preaching to Muslims and threatened to charge them with a hate crime.
“He said we were in a Muslim area and were not allowed to spread our Christian message,” Cunningham told the Telegraph. “He said we were committing a hate crime by telling the youths to leave Islam and said that he was going to take us to the police station.”
Abraham, an Egyptian-born Muslim who converted to Christianity, told the Telegraph his experience confirms Anglican Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali’s controversial statement that parts of Britain have become “no-go” areas.

Coalition forces round up Special Groups criminals around Iraq
BAGHDAD Coalition forces captured an alleged Special Groups leader, and the suspected primary Special Groups weapons smuggler and financier for Al Kut in operations south of Baghdad Thursday.
Acting on intelligence information, Coalition forces conducted a raid on the residence of a suspected Iranian-trained Special Groups leader in al-Mahawil, which lies about 70 km south of Baghdad near Hillah.
Coalition forces entered the suspected outlaws residence where he surrendered without incident.
In a separate operation near Al Kut, intelligence tips helped Coalition forces track down the hideout of a suspected Special Groups criminal, who sources allege is the primary weapons smuggler and financier for Special Groups elements in that area.
Coalition forces stormed the suspected criminals location, about 30 km east of Al Kut, where he and another suspected criminal surrendered.
As Special Groups leaders and their criminal associates flee their normal area of operations, Iraqi and Coalition Security Forces will continue to track and disrupt their activities, said U.S. Army Capt. Charles Calio, MNF-I spokesperson. We will continue to deny these criminals refuge in any part of Iraq.
