:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
The Hunt for American al Qaeda

The United States is turning up the heat in the hunt for the California boy turned al Qaeda operative, Adam Gadahn, who has been charged with treason and is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan. If caught and convicted, Gadahn could face the death penalty.

The State Department along with the Department of Diplomatic Security announced the beginning of a publicity campaign in Afghanistan urging locals to provide any information on Gadahn's whereabouts, with a reward if the information leads to his capture.

Radio advertisements with information concerning the $1 million reward have already begun airing. Additionally, printed materials including matchbooks, handbills and posters will be distributed throughout the region in the coming weeks in attempts to elicit cooperation from members of the Afghan community. TSA Statement on LAX Incident
News & Happenings
July 2, 2008

At approximately 10:55 a.m. Pacific Time a male individual on the public side of the international terminal of Los Angeles International Airport claimed to have explosive materials in a backpack. Law enforcement officials responded and placed the individual in custody. A search of the area found an unattended bag located near a ticket counter in the international terminal and out of an abundance of caution a perimeter was established and the LAPD bomb squad is on scene.

Currently the south checkpoint remains open, while the north checkpoint is closed. Traffic coming into the terminal has been stopped.

This message will be updated as more information becomes available.

Officer’s Vigilance Leads to Discovery of Suspicious Items
News & Happenings
July 1, 2008

Lead Transportation Security Officer Brandon Alexander recently identified a suspicious item hidden in a book while screening a passenger’s carry-on bag at Newark-Liberty (N.J.) International Airport. The inside of the book was carved out and contained a concealed, two-piece electronic device with wires and other mechanical components.

Bomb Appraisal Officer Mike Walsh interviewed the passenger and learned that four identical pieces of electronics were concealed in a book in the passenger’s checked bag, along with a separate box of electronic components. The passenger told Walsh that she was an art student and the discovered material was an art project she was taking back to Germany.

The items were cleared and the passenger was allowed to fly, with no flight delays.

“In the world of threats to civil aviation it is this kind of vigilance and detection capabilities that assist TSA in meeting those threats and keeping the traveling public safe. We are very proud of our Newark officers,” said Federal Security Director Barbara Powell.

Passenger Arrested With Multiple IDs Spotted by Travel Document Checker
News & Happeneings
July 1, 2008

A passenger attempting to use multiple fraudulent IDs was recently arrested after a security officer at Jackson-Evers (Miss.) International Airport identified a discrepancy with her driver’s license.

On June 12, when the passenger handed her boarding pass and driver’s license to Transportation Security Officer Bryan Davis Stringer, he noticed two different sets of state seal holograms as he inspected the ID with an ultra-violet light known as a magnifying loupe.

Behavior Detection Officers Frank Juarez and Carlos Lee interviewed the passenger, who provided yet a different driver’s license – this one from California, and expired.

Law enforcement was called and the passenger was arrested on charges of possession of fraudulent identification.

“The vigilance and training exhibited by Transportation Security Officer Stringer is deserving of recognition,” said Federal Security Director David Wynn. “TSA officers are dedicated to ensuring the safety of the traveling public and have shown a continual emphasis in the same regard.”

“Colombia hostage Betancourt freed”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “French-Colombian politican Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages held by rebels in Colombia have been rescued by government troops.
Ms Betancourt had been held for more than six years by the rebel Farc group and was their highest-profile captive.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who had made her rescue a priority, said he was very happy. Her children, who spoke of their joy, are to fly to meet her.
The Farc has been fighting to overthrow the Colombian government for 40 years.

Colombian Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos said no-one had been hurt in Wednesday’s operation in the southern province of Guaviare and that the 15 hostages were in relatively good health.”

Director’s Statement: Independence Day
Statement to Employees by Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Mike Hayden on Independence Day

July 2, 2008

Friday marks another milestone in the life of America’s thriving democracy. Even after 232 years, the infinite promise that defines our Republic is an undiminished source of inspiration and pride. The simple truths of freedom, equality, and self-government that motivated our Founding Fathers gave their revolution the power to advance and endure. It remains our great patrimony as Americans, and a source of hope for all humanity.

CIA exists to safeguard our nation’s people and way of life. We stand in common cause with partners around the globe who seek the same liberty that our forefathers declared a birthright for all. And we remain at war with the most ruthless enemies of democracy, a difficult yet essential mission for free men and women.

Wherever you serve, Jeanine and I hope you will be able to take the time to celebrate and enjoy America’s birthday. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy holiday.

Mike Hayden

Troops in Iraq Detain Seven, Unearth Weapons Caches

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 2, 2008 – Coalition and Iraqi forces captured seven suspects and seized weapons in Iraq over the past three days, military officials said.

Coalition forces captured two suspected members of Iranian-backed “special groups” during operations in the Adhamiyah district of Baghdad.

One of the suspects, an alleged weapons smuggler and militant trainer, is linked to high-profile attacks on coalition and Iraqi security forces, military officials said. Troops discovered numerous weapons and ammunition on site after detaining the primary suspect and an associate.

In a two-day raid that culminated today, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers seized weapons in the Rashid district of southern Baghdad. Soldiers from 64th Armor Regiment, attached to the 4th Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team, found a homemade bomb, assault rifles, a pistol and ammunition.

“The 1st Brigade continues to be steadfast and loyal as we assist the [Iraqi security forces] and Iraqi security volunteers in providing a safe and secure environment where the people live and work,” said Army Maj. Dave Olson, brigade spokesman.

In separate operations yesterday, coalition and Iraqi forces unearthed four weapons caches in Iraq. The stockpiles included assault rifles, ammunition, grenades, military equipment and roadside bombs.

During operations June 30:

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained three suspects in the Rashid district of southern Baghdad. Troops detained one suspect in the Doura Market area, and nabbed the two others as they attempted to transport weapons through the Saha neighborhood of the Zubaida area.

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained two wanted individuals and discovered a munitions cache in the Rashid district of southern Baghdad. One of the suspects allegedly is a special groups member, military officials said.

— Iraqi security forces and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers uncovered weapons in Baghdad. The combined caches contained homemade bombs, mortar and grenade rounds and launchers, military equipment and bomb-making materials.

(Compiled from Multinational Force Iraq and Multinational Corps Iraq news releases.)
