This morning I heard that one of the other candidates commented that the Constitution is a living, breathing document.
Frankly, I assumed this came from Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. It is identical to what Al Gore said when he was running for President in 2000, when he said he would look for judges who understand that our Constitution is a living, breathing document, that it was intended by our founders to be interpreted in the light of the constantly evolving experience of the American people.
Imagine my surprise when I learned that this statement actually came from my opponent, Governor Huckabee, in an interview with CNN this morning. Now I know Governor Huckabee was talking about amending the Constitution, but I dont think he understood that he was using code words that support judicial activism.
He does not appear to understand that reliance on the notion that the Constitution is a living, breathing document is precisely the kind of wrong-headed thinking about the Constitution that gave us Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion across our nation, and Lawrence v. Texas, which decriminalized sodomy.
I do not believe the Constitution is a living, breathing document. I am committed to appointing strict constructionist judges to the bench if I am elected President, strict constructionists who believe the Constitution has a fixed meaning that can be applied to cases that come before the courts today. They do NOT believe the Constitution is a living, breathing document, whose meaning, constantly changing with the sifting sands of our culture, can be determined and applied by unelected judges.
I fear that this loose language about our Constitution calls into question Governor Huckabees appreciation and understanding of the issue of judicial activism and raises questions as to what kind of judges he would appoint were he to become President.
Other than that, I think everything I have heard him say. every thing that I have read, that he has written. Outstanding and right on spot.
C’mon South Carolina - GET IT RIGHT this weekend! Romney in NV and Fred in SC would make my weekend!
Funny you should say that. When he was considering running, I read a little about him and decided I was for him, based on his positions. I'd seen him in movies but that was meaningless for me; I'd NEVER watched Law and Order; and in fact I was burned once by voting an actor into the Governor's mansion not long ago here in CA, so was a little untrusting of that career switch (Reagan notwithstanding). Only later did I learn that acting came to him, that he had not sought it at all.
So from then on, I told people I was thinking about this guy Thompson, at least until he disappointed me.
Well, I am still waiting for him to disappoint me. It seems that I become more impressed with him nearly on a daily basis. I pray he will make it through tomorrow.
WAKE UP VOTERS!
FRED IS THE ONE!
(my first all caps post)
I’m really admiring the way your guy is in the tank for Fred.
Keep it up, Huck!
Huckabee also was cited in the CNN of altering the Constitution to make it in accordance to God’s standards. I am sure he has an explanation for that one too.
Huck does play a good set up man role doesn't he. LOL ol' Huck tees 'em up and fred hits 'em out of the park.
And if one of those 3 weasels actually wins we get to watch them work with the socialists to raise taxes, pull out of Iraq just before the mid terms and pass a universal health care mandate policed by the IRS.
And you thought Obama and Hillary were bad.
Oh my gosh, that article ROCKS like a rockin’ chair! I laughed my butt off and I only love Fred even more after that.
Everyone read Uriah’s link from Newsweek about the best campaign question Fred got! His answer is even better!
I don’t want to be correct. I want the hearts and minds of South Carolina Republicans to be motivated by what is best for our country, and to vote Fred Thompson tomorrow. I will be PRAYING. I fear, after what he said on Hannity, that he won’t go further if he comes in 3rd. We NEED him to keep going but he needs a good showing.
I just hope the voters there will stop being attracted by the shiny cross Huckster keeps dangling before their eyes!
You GO, Fred!!
Well it WAS Huckabee who made the stupid comment to which Fred is referring.
Don't waste your breath, he is a one post pony... same post over and over and over andover and over.
Ironically, the following is true...
"The Declaration, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are currently housed in the National Archives. All three are written on parchment... Parchment is treated animal skin, typically sheepskin."
Which means that once upon a time, the parchment the Constitution is written on used to be a living, breathing animal... ;-)
We are looking too much at the personalities here in these polls; what the people being polled seem to be saying if they are listening to the candidates at all is that they no longer want conservatism, they want to crawl back into the womb.
Conservatism itself may have become a living, breathing creature changing before our eyes.
Fred gets it and is the only true conservative in the race. A big FRED BTTT!
A living breathing Constitution is DOA. Not a Constitution, a suggestion. It does little more than enumerate the branches of government and assign names to offices.
BumPing!!
Duncan Hunter is an established true conservative and is in the race.
