As I say, the above demographic audit has become something of an annual tradition in this space. But here's something new that took hold in the year 2007: A radical antihumanism, long present just below the surface, bobbed up and became explicit and respectable. In Britain, the Optimum Population Trust said that "the biggest cause of climate change is climate changers in other words, human beings," and professor John Guillebaud called on Britons to voluntarily reduce the number of children they have.
"Every person who is born," says Toni Vernelli, "produces more rubbish, more pollution, more greenhouse gases and adds to the problem of overpopulation." We are the pollution, and sterilization is the solution. The best way to bequeath a more sustainable environment to our children is not to have any.
What's the "pro-choice" line? "Every child should be wanted"? Not anymore. The progressive position has subtly evolved: Every child should be unwanted.
By the way, if you're looking for some last-minute stocking stuffers, Oxford University Press has published a book by professor David Benatar of the University of Cape Town called "Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence." The author "argues for the 'anti-natal' view that it is always wrong to have children
. Anti-natalism also implies that it would be better if humanity became extinct." As does Alan Weisman's "The World Without Us" which Publishers Weekly hails as "an enthralling tour of the world
anticipating, often poetically, what a planet without us would be like." It's a good thing it "anticipates" it poetically, because, once it happens, there will be no more poetry.

The American Thinker’s Web site ran the numbers. In the seven years between the signing of Kyoto in 1997 and 2004, here’s what happened:
Emissions worldwide increased 18.0 percent;
Emissions from countries that signed the treaty increased 21.1 percent;
Emissions from nonsigners increased 10.0 percent; and
Emissions from the United States increased 6.6 percent.
The entire Left way of thinking is ironic.
For example, people who cannot even balance THEIR OWN checkbook think they can boost an economy by redistributing wealth by soaking the rich (meaning everyone with a job) with taxes.
In a certain perverse way, I'm all in favor of this latest "progressive" fad.
It should effectively rid the world of enviro-wackoism in the course of one generation.
Emissions from countries that signed the treaty increased 21.1 percent;
Emissions from nonsigners increased 10.0 percent; and
Emissions from the United States increased 6.6 percent.
This just proves the point.
When in doubt, do the OPPOSITE of what a lefty think is the correct thing to do.

It's hard not to conclude a form of mental illness has gripped the world's elites. If you're one of that dwindling band of Westerners who'll be celebrating the birth of a child, "homeless" or otherwise, next week, make the most of it. A year or two on, and the eco-professors will propose banning Nativity scenes because they set a bad example.

The idea, it seems to me, is that because humanity was not good enough to make Marxxism work, then it has no right to exist at all.
Yesterday's left promoted the same belief.
Actually, it's not about the destruction of civilization, it's about the extinction of humanity.
Good for you! Conservatives need to keep breeding and producing great, productive children that will be the leaders of tomorrow. The left will become like the Shakers - eventually, there will be none of them left. (I know I'm being overly hopeful, but I'm an optimist.)
I hope you have many grandchildren & great-grandchildren!
This has happened before: the Albigensian madness in southern France in the 12th and 13th Century. This was a gnostic religious movement which held that the physical world was evil and created by Satan.
They said the worst crime was to cruelly trap another soul in flesh by bringing another child into the world. Their main commandment was to abstain from natural (procreative) intercourse.
Their leaders, called Cathari, were celibate and morbidly ascetical: they wouldnt eat meat or burn a fire to keep warm (small carbon footprint?) -—and they condemned the Catholics who said it was morally OK to eat and drink and keep warm and marry and make love and have children.
The Albigensians told their followers that Christianity (Catholicism) was a lie and that they had no religious or moral obligations other than childlessness. It was OK for them to have non-procreativesex , so homosexuality and contraception were virtuous.
The Catholic Church was appalled by the rapid spread of this insane movement across southern France. After the failure of peaceful attempts at conversion, the Church was able to defeat them only by calling a Crusade.
Whats next with the New Albigensians? Watch and see.
If they want to take this to its logical conclusion, then they should KILL THEMSELVES! In an environmentally friendly way, of course.
I have been saying this for some time now. The dark forces of Lucifer AKA Satan AKA The Devil, are very much alive today. It is my humble opinion that this dark force was behind the beginnings of Islam. Mohammad was a prophet all right, a prophet of death and darkness! He was the devil's handmaiden.
Good for you! Remember that though the neo-Malthusians and neo-Ludites don’t procreate, they do recruit. They control the major sources of American children’s spiritual (de)formation: the TV, the Mall, and the Public School .
I pray every day on my knees: O Lord, protect my boys.
That form of evolution I can agree with.
They'll try. They'll go for imposing a $5,000 carbon tax on parents for every childbirth. They'll promote homosexuality in the schools (Gay-Straight Alliance in the middle and high schools) and in the media. The "Will and Grace" generation --- all our kids' peers --- think homosexuality is morally neutral, just a kind of natural diversity like right-and left-handedness.
And I'll bet 80% of FReepers have no objection to marital contraception. Heterosexual gays.
Perhaps in the manner of Timothy Treadwell, “recycling” themselves.
