California Fire Battalion Chief - Whoever Did This Knew What They Were Doing

October 22, 2007

Fire officials are now stating that the Orange County Santiago fire was purposely set and there is speculation that other fires may have also been deliberate. See Interactive Map

Fire officials found three separate “points of origin,” all near the intersection of Silverado Canyon Road and Santiago Canyon Road. Two were on one side of the road, and the third was on the other. “Whoever did this knew what they were doing,” said Kris Concepcion, a fire authority battalion chief. Also, the fire traveled 3 miles in its first 20 minutes when it was ignited about 6 p.m. Sunday, he said.

We are NOT implying that the California fires are an act of terrorism however; the threat of pyro-terrorist attacks pose a significant risk to the U.S. and the fires in California and in Greece earlier this year should be a wake-up call.

In 2003 an FBI memo alerted law enforcement agencies that an al-Qaeda terrorist being held in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.

It was reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.

“The detainee believed that significant damage to the U.S. economy would result and once it was realized that the fires were terrorist acts, U.S. citizens would put pressure on the U.S. government to change its policies,” the memo said.

How Can So Many Fires Be By Natural Causes ?

A Local News Radio talk show host in San Diego asked, “how can so many fires, in so many places, in such a short period of time, all be caused by natural causes”.

al-Qaeda Detainee Spoke of Fire Plot

As we have stated before. If you see anything suspicious, report it to law enforcement immediately.

UPDATE: Video - Officials say arson now suspected in Orange County Fire

UPDATE: From Los Angeles Fox News

“I’m sad to report this is an arson fire,” OCFA Chief Chip Prather announced at an early morning briefing. “There were three separate starts: two on one side of the road and one on the other, and obviously we are actively investigating that.”

Links - A number of blogs and websites have sprung up to report on the fires. We will provide links to a couple we’ve found.

Can’t be terrorists, according to this thread. Its leftover jap baloons and people with adjustable rate mortgages

You forgot people lighting their homes by candle light since Bush vetoed S-CHIP and they can't pay their electric bills because they're spending all their money on health care for their kids.

Drudge link up now:

And even if it were terrorism, it couldn't be mooseSlime terrorism. It would have to be some other kind.

(Do these posters realize what kind of forum this is, or do they think they're still on DU?)

They fancy themselves the voice of reason. At least that's what they like to pretend.

If you really want a laugh, check out the threads from the Trolley Square mall rampage in Utah a few months ago. Same posters, saying the same nonsense. As soon as the shooter was ID'd as an islamist, they scattered like cockroaches in a spotlight.

More likely it’s ELF. This is a classic example of environmental terrorism.

I think omega is right. I remember a database I found last year that was tracking them.

About a month ago I read somewhere on the Internet (Maybe it was here, in the Free Republic) of a threat by Al-Qaeda to set these type of fires in the Western US. Now, it seems that there were MULTIPLE starting points for these blazes. Could Al-Qaeda be behind it, right here in the USA, trying to achieve by terror what they have failed to accomplish on the battlefield? More asymmetric warfare?

Terrorism seems a catch all term now. It could well be arson.

The Rise of Low-Tech Terrorism
The movies were an affront to God, encouraging vice and Western-style decadence. So in August 1978, four Shiite revolutionaries locked the doors of the Cinema Rex in the Iranian city of Abadan and set the theater on fire... At least 377 people—perhaps many more—were burned alive.

[snip] It's also the second-deadliest terrorist attack in modern history—deadlier even than airline bombings such as Pan Am Flight 103—and one that offers many lessons about the changing threat of terrorism today.

[snip] tried-and-true terrorism methods as low-tech bombs, hostage-taking and arson have tremendous appeal to jihadists.

Could be some "motivated" individuals like the DC Snipers, and the mall shooters, and the men who have driven SUVs into crowds of people.

"I would not put it past the enemies of this nation to have been the cause...and I am speaking of both the domestic, hard left, useful idiot enemies, as well as the Islamic terrorist enemies. In my mind, during this time of war, they are very much one and the same. They spout the same reason and purpose behind their action and in their public pronouncements support one another."

I’ve mentioned the possibility of terrorists setting forest fires several times on this forum over the past couple of years. It is such an easy, low-budget thing to do, and maybe that’s why they never tried it - until now? If that becomes part of their M.O., the public will finally - perhaps - take the threat seriously.

But it's a mistake to write off the angry amateurs. They're not terribly skilled, but it doesn't take that much skill to kill dozens of people

Similar fires in the Florida Evergades were found to be started by Broward County firefighters—for overtime pay.

We had something like that in our volunteer fire department. There was a 19 year old kid that joined a few years ago. Shortly after he joined we had a rash of brush fires. After about 6 or 8 fires, some of the members of the hall started to notice that every time we were called out on one of the recent brush fires, this kid was always the first one there in full turn out gear. Wasn't long before somebody saw him setting a fire and the rest is history. There was no pay involved. He was doing it for the attention. The county prosecuted him for several counts of arson and last I heard he was away in the big house.....

Lately it seems there are too many posters here trying to eliminate Muslims from any acts like this.

Foremost I will never believe Muslims and their ideology of Islam will be compatible with Christianity, and in the last 10 years its been found (and covered up) that almost all out of the blue unpredictable acts of carnage have Islamic involvement, so unless all the Muslims on earth have decided to build spaceships and leave earth I will always first look in their direction and then secondly try to prove they did NOT have any involvement.

Those that here on the boards trying to make Muslims as victims are in my view questionable to begin with.
My rant this morning cause yesterday I broke my finger at work and its got me in a little pain right now.
