New York Times Poll: Evangelicals Agree with Dr. Dobson

A New York Times/CBS News poll shows white, evangelical Republicans agree with Dr. James Dobson.

Nearly 60 percent of those who plan to vote in the primaries said they could not support a candidate they didn't agree with on issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. Eighty-six percent said presidential candidates should be judged on both their political record and their personal life.

Dr. Dobson has taken a beating in the media for promising to vote only for a candidate who shares his basic values, even if that means supporting a third-party candidate.

Last week, he wrote an op-ed piece for The New York Times to clarify his position: "Speaking personally, and not for the organization I represent, I firmly believe that the selection of a president should begin with a recommitment to traditional moral values and beliefs. Those include the sanctity of human life, the institution of marriage, and other inviolable pro-family principles. Only after that determination is made can the acceptability of a nominee be assessed."

Rick Scarborough, president of Vision America, a Texas-based group that has a network of 5,000 pastors willing to mobilize their churches to vote, said evangelicals are not bluffing.

“I am not going to cast a sacred vote granted to me by the blood of millions of God-fearing Americans who died on the fields of battle for freedom, for a candidate who says it’s OK to kill the unborn,” he told The Times. “I just can’t.”

I know it is on Hannity’s site, in the Friday archive of his show. He read the email to dobson on the air. dobson said the he did indeed write it but if it had been for public release he would not have used the words that he did... words that were harsh, untrue, degrading. demeaning and vicious... and he admitted that he has never met Fred! He attacked Fred in every way the msm has, ventured into personal attacks not worthy of carville, plus he said he was not a Christian. He also lied about his people calling Fred and apologizing about the email. Fred’s team had documented the call and content. dobson lied saying that they called Fred but there was no apology. Incredulous lie. This man is a vile liar and the truth is not in him. BTW, FRED has a 100% rating on Right to Life issues! He also said that if the States can't get it done that he would support a marriage amendment as a last resort. Not good enough for James the pious!

I’m sick of the republican party because it stands for a little more fiscal responsibility than the dems. They will both spend us into oblivion and socialism. There is no longer a bridge to build between the two ideologies; conservatism vs. socialism so we should give up trying. At this point, it’s a pure power grab with 3 TRILLION at stake.

I would say that you may not believe Guiliani, that is your right, but if you were a betting man I can give you a sure bet that whoever Rudy would select would be a heck of a lot better than what Hillary would.

You are 100% guaranteed that she would elect someone whos first loyalty would be to Planned Parenthood. But with Rudy you at least have a chance that he would keep his promise to select Judges like Roberts and Alito. You would also have more political influence on him (same goes for any of the Republican nominees), where you will never ever have a seat at Hillarys table.

What you are doing by helping her get elected is loosing any minute chance of a voice at the Oval Office.

I am with you,it does seem that way. I listened to Mr.Dobson and he is against Thompson over the marriage issue? Fred does believe that marriage is defined as between a man and a woman. So because Fred does not think a Constitutional ammendment is necessary, Dobson would let Hillary win??? Someone please help me understand this.

do it now while we face several SCOTUS retirements. This is not bringing on Jimmy Carter, HRC will be there for two terms and will get the judges. That is not a "lesson" to the republican, it is damning the innocent.

I agree with you. Yes, we should get the MOST conservative candidate possible through the primary process. And then support the opponent of Hillary, and NOT through a coalition-splitting third party. That is a selfish act that WILL led to decades more of death.

I saw Dobson on Hannity’s show tonight. He made alot of sense and I agreed with him. Sean is so busy pushing Rudy when he should be pushing a true conservative. Ann Coulter agreed with Dobsen too. Dobsen made some excellent points. Ann suggested that we push for a true conservative to win the primary and stop promoting the so-called top 3. However, I would never vote 3rd party because Hillary is just evil. We just need the right man(conservative) to win the primary and he will win the election.

There was and is only one Billy Graham... friend to all Presidents... walking amongst the enemy as Christ did. Even ‘toon had to moderate when Billy was on deck. The rest are all wannabes and worse. Swaggert... the other TV Evangelist that had a gay scandal... and Oral Roberts son going off all Capone... seems satan finds many of them an easy mark... kinda like a few of our Senators. At least we have “some” good ones... evilcrats have none at all.
