Police in Norfolk, Va., are investigating whether an alleged attack against a 13-year-old boy that witnesses caught on tape Saturday was racially motivated, WAVY-TV reported Monday. The tape shows the victim, Damien O'Rourke, who is white, being violently beaten by a group of African American teenagers.

I saw it and it appeared real rather than alleged. It was a gang of African Americans that jumped him. The white kid appeared to be big for his age, not the kind most gang-bangers would have the guts to take on one-on-one.

The victim would be European-American (or European American, as they used African American, not African-American--one is an American modified by a relation to some continent, and the other is a compound noun). Caucasians would be people from the Caucasus region (apparently how the term is used in Europe).

However, the other thread has links to the video. There was an attack (unless some guy is very good with special effects--and for other readers, no, not suggesting that the video was faked; the attack did happen).

Call it "pc" if you like, but that's exactly how we say it to our kids. Our children can trace their ancestry back to both Africa and Europe. We just tell them they're Americans. Their ancestors came from those continents. They were born here.

Of course, the eldest, 11, has come to view himself as black, anyway. Labeling oneself as black or white is practically unavoidable because those are the labels everyone else wears and puts on him.

The only time you must use the word "alleged" is when directly referring to the persons involved until there is a conviction, not the act itself.

This was not an "alleged" anything.....it was 5 kids beating on one kid. When naming persons of interest they would be labelled "alleged attackers."

The news outlets have to print "alleged" until something is proved in court or an indictment comes down...not sure which.

In this litigious world they do not want a slander/liable suit filed against them.

Hmmm. Why is it that the victim is "white" but the perps are "African-Americans"? Why isn't the victim a "Caucasian-American"? Or why aren't the perps "blacks"?

I may have the order wrong but from what I remember, African Americans once wanted to be called "Negro", then they wanted to be called "colored" (hence the NAACP), then they wanted to be called "black", now they want to be called "African American" (like Teresa Hines Kerry).
